Exactly. I basically had two max HP up, provoke, steadfast block, chakra and pray. Iron maiden armor and survival vest as accessory. Then constantly used steel skin and life saver. I never use spells but I would assume that using manaward and regen would just make him the ultimate damage sponge while the other members of the party can focus on damage dealing.
Trick for playing Barret that I learned in Remake, and I'm pretty sure still works in Rebirth. Fire off a full mag, then, when he goes into his reload animation, hit Triangle to cancel the animation, charge Overcharge a bit, then get back to shooting.
If you're only going to do one more build, I'd say go for Cait Sith, but I'd love to see your takes on Red XIII and Yuffie if you're feeling at all inclined to do a build for every character.
Barret with provoke, pray, steadfast block, auto cast barrier and auto unique ability, atb stagger and I don’t even have to use him except to build synergy points
I saw someone do HP Absorb Enemy Skill Yuffie, with Mug to recharge the ATB and spam the Plasma Discharge explosion. It seemed pretty strong for yuffie especially when you combine it with stuff like Doppelganger and Blindside to get out of stuns etc.
@@BigAussieCheeses Sure, and that's what I do for general gameplay, but when I'm just spamming battle trials or w/e, Yuffie makes much better use of the combination.
Haven't watched yet. I'm playing on normal at chapter 8 so far but I've kitted Barret out mostly the same way I had him on my hard difficulty run of remake. Warding + Poison, cleansing, Barrier & revive, chakra & prayer. I think one more materia? Basically, he's the tank who's going to survive longer than anyone else if shit gets hairy and I need to dish out healing/curing/revives.
If you are fighting an element heavy enemy you can pair magnify in the armour with barret and life saver will have him take 0 fire and ice or lightning and wind damage
This is the type of build guide ive been trying to find. Need more builds for different characters that have more focus on the AI controlling them while we play a different/favorite character. I understand that the game is ment more to switch between but i love the idea of playing my favorite character while the other 2 characters aren't being useless. I'm gonna sub just in hopes of seeing more guides like this so thank you.

@@petebagwell6666Red 13 doesn't have as much health as Red 13. You're playing Red 13 wrong if you put provoke, Red excels in Pressure damage to reach stagger.
another idea is to focus barret on buidling ATB, and then put prayer on him. so you can always have him cast a full party heal. with life saver on, you could swap to chackra as well due to his high max hp. overall, people are really sleeping on barret, because they are too focused on 100% dmg. but barret really excel on being a tank and healer instead. it also help how fast his atb fills as well.
use chakra on him. with his tanky HP, chakra lv 5 heals A TON especially when his HP is low. and it's free MP. also, with bonus healing perks you'll reach 80% of his max HP with chakra.
Edit a month later, brutal is broken, pointless grinding. You gotta learn to be perfect in every way or you lose instantly on their cheap gimmicks. Sucks the fun right out the game Omg i forgot to use barrier the whole game. No wonder I cant beat brutals
One thing I like to add to this build is to stack effects that increase healing when critical on hp, and Chakra. It can make chakra heal most of your own hp bar when you're in the red for no mp and only 1 ATB.
i found that the Karmic cowl, which is crafted from the master tonberry crown, gives you more defence, vit then the vests, at least while still fairly early game, while riot gives 10%, the flat 30 points from the cowl still gives you more points around level 40, now post game and 70 numbers will change, but its worth noting if people want this build through the main story first
Thanks for explaining. I saw a few people mention the karmic cowl but it didn't make sense until I read your comment (percentages versus the 30 flat points).
I went against the grain. He's my primary healer. Give him ATB boosts, prayer, and item magnify materia. Cure magic and mp boost of you like as needed.
Fun to set up and make a class, "Dark Knight cloud" etc. His Purple sword is sooo dark knight AND has HP sifon to regain HP after darkside. Seems almost done on purpose! I make new classes each chapter. So fresh! Next will be a blue mage build, all short cuts will be enemy skills
If you want barret to always be unkillable and add healer to his kit, give him prayer and Chakra. Has long as you hit Chakra below 50% health is a 0 MP super heal and prayer can be a party heal also n 0mp
considering how long his buffs last, and how much spare ATB he gets, chakra is actually not bad, single atb, poison cleanse and decent heal is good. karmic cowl would also be a better accessory i think. been running aerith barrett and cloud, playing as aerith to use combat savior and its made the game a breeze.
One other materia I like on Barret is a maxed out Chakra materia. With his massive hp pool, I find cure spells to be pretty inefficient to heal him so being able to use Chakra's percentage based heals is quite nice (admittedly it's pretty weak at lower star ratings though, and it doesn't let you get to max, but with his high hp pool I often find I am able to keep him up with just that so I don't have to waste any MP on healing).
Agreed! Not only does it pair well with lifestance, but because it only needs one atb gauge, it's not nearly as costly as prayer is, that I often see people often recommend.
@@xRoycexYeah I'm in the end game now and chakra heals Barret for ~4k which is a ton with his super high defenses. Very useful as I can just have him use life shaver and swap to him every so often to chakra up and use overcharge.
Cait pairs well with Barrett cause he can increase luck which inc critical hit rate. Synergizes well with Barrett's maximum fury. And cait does massive dmg with moogle knuckle which increases stagger percentage.
I've been using Barret's two defensive buff abilities, put barrier on him, auto-cast cure and provoke materia on Red13 and use the 3rd character as your main and you pretty much have an almost invincible team. Provoke NEEDS to be on Red13 since he will be blocking most of the time which means Barret will get less damage to tank from one party member.
Yea only thing he's good for is buffing the team for crit rate. He can increase stagger percentage but tifa does that way better imo. He'd prob combo well with Barrett cause of maximum fury.
Do you know how to quick charge? I noticed you were not doing it and you said you should not manually charge so I will just assume you don't know about it. Basically after a square attack Barret will reload and it makes a noise, if you press triangle right after that it will quick charge. You can also quick charge after any weapon ability by presing triangle right after. You should always, always, always quick charge. Also for a support build like this the two item materia could be really useful. Increasing the effectiveness of items and letting you use item for no ATB cost.
I use Yuffie and Red XIII a lot so I'd love to see your take on them but I'd also love to see Cait Sith because his combat just hasn't meshed with me at all. He feels 10% as effective in combat as the other guys so maybe I'm just not thinking about him the right way.
only thing to take into account is how lifesaver actually works with things like protect let's say barret has protect and he takes 100 damage, that damage will be reduced because of protect. but if he has lifesaver and protect up, and someone else takes 100 damage. they will take that full 100 damage, lifesaver will heal up that 100 damage instantly for that ally, and then barret will lose the full 100 from his own hp protect will only mitigate damage on the person that actually took the attack itself
Because Barret could already do this in the previous game, and with the enhancements to this one, it always made Red XIII seem like the most useless character in this game (at least until the last member I do not yet have). Red sucks vs aerial enemies, which there are too many of in this game, and his job is as a "tank" that can eventually get massive burst. Meanwhile, Barret can tank, hit air, and do consistent damage instead of having to simply stockpile it for a short window of massive burst.
Do these builds help with hard mode? One of the reasons I didn't plat remake was because Hard was too much of a chore with the no items and not being able to use rest points.
Bro just give him Chakra. I barely ever cast healing because he just always has an ATB bar when he drops under 50% so chakra is basically a free single target cura on him. It's a single materia slot and probably the single most impactful single materia you can give him (unless you aren't playing as him, then it's probably provoke).
Love your vids man ! Except for Cloud where I had almost the same build, it really helped me when I paused the game to train and build the other characters etc so even though you said 1 or 2 more, I hope you'll do them all, thanks ! :D
Honestly my party for most of the game was Cloud-Yuffie-Aerith, and still killed very quick. You can get some absolutely disgusting builds for Yuffie where she basically just always builds ATB and fills limit bars stupid quick, and combining it with limit siphon on Aerith and her lvl 2 limit you can become invincible to physical attacks for a long period *very* quickly. That was for normal mode, atleast. Hard I severely changed around my party every fight, because I really had to build for bosses and avoid random enemies as much as possible as they were just MP sinks.
Is there any chance that you can give all of the Folio choices? I'm struggling with what to choose and not sure what's the best path when you only show a couple of the selections.
You can, but it requires doing ALL of hard mode, and all sidequests a second time IN hard mode, plus arenas, combat sims, etc. It's a challenge, but given getting more SP also ups weapon stats and abilities, well worth it.
Do them ALL please also would love to see your combat setting shortcuts and what tour are rocking with as far as your main squad and how they are equipped etc would be awesome to see someone elses build
I have a question maybe someone can answer. It’s about the overcharge protect spell. Is it only available if I use the high caliber weapon? I’m not sure know how to master a weapon like you mentioned. If it is mastered can I use a gun with more materia and still get overcharge protect?
It's a weapon equip ability, like it's in those extra equip slots weapons get, from what I recall. Notably, the Barrage Blaster has it, and for almost all content in the game with few exceptions the Barrage Blaster is the best weapon to have equipped. As for mastering, it's when you learn the ability from the weapon, so you don't have to have it equipped to use it, like in Barret's case Bonus Round, Lifesaver, etc.
Love these builds you've done so far. I'm on hard mode and your tips have really helped! Would love to see a Cait Sith build as he's one of my favorite characters to play. He's so much fun!
My plan is to give Barret a ribbon and all elemental absorb with healing and buffer magic. If I can finish the 3D brawler and not take away from anyone else. If Barret cant die...
How're you getting him all elemental absorb? From what I recall, if multiple elemental materia are equipped, only the far-right one takes effect, either on weapon or armour. So you could have one on each, but two on one doesn't give more resist, atleast from what I remember.
@AltorLight Yeah, I tried it, SE deliberately prevents you from being immune to all four elements. A damn shame since only one character would have it, and there's lots of downsides.
@@nonyabusiness4151 I mean, once you get to the point where weapons have 6 or 7 slots, and 8-slot armour, it'd trivialize some of the challenges in the VR stuff, so I can see why, but yeah I had hoped to do it and was disappointed when I couldn't.
Nice tips, I've specked out Barret as an awesome AI controlled team mate using both auto attack purple materia on him as well as synergy linked to either Comet or Petrify materia. When you've maxed out either of those materia the synergy attack will use the highest tier of those elemental attacks. With Comet you can rain down meteors across the entire combat area 😊

I was using a healer Barrett build in the first game with Lifesaver, Chakra and Pray and it seems to work just as well in this game :D

In remake hard mode I used tank Barret multiply barrier, chakra pray with healing carcarnet, lifesaver felt key

Its better not to put the provoke on Barret as Lifesaver doesnt really kill him when your allies get hurt. Just be careful of AOE attacks

What's your favourite team comp? Been sticking with Cloud, Tifa and Yuffie for a long time now and enjoy the mobility, stagger and Yuffies ninjutsu.

Pray is an amazing materia for him!! He can get his atb us so quick too :) also lifesaver is a good combo
I hated on barret for a while. Been using him after reaching halfway through the game. Regret not using him sooner as my 3rd.

Great build, do you play on Active or Classic in the settings. it seems my other party members never use Auto Cast unless im on classic mode

@@nonyabusiness4151 I mean, once you get to the point where weapons have 6 or 7 slots, and 8-slot armour, it'd trivialize some of the challenges in the VR stuff, so I can see why, but yeah I had hoped to do it and was disappointed when I couldn't.

Nice tips, I've specked out Barret as an awesome AI controlled team mate using both auto attack purple materia on him as well as synergy linked to either Comet or Petrify materia. When you've maxed out either of those materia the synergy attack will use the highest tier of those elemental attacks. With Comet you can rain down meteors across the entire combat area 😊
It has to be maxed? So it doesn't use lvl2 petrify?
