  • Last week someone asked how to properly take a cutting, so I thought I would make a video trying to explain from start to finish how to do so. This covers when to take cuttings, what kind of cuttings to take, where to keep them, what kind of soil to use, etc.

    So is it too late to do semi-lignified cuttings? Zone 8b, October. Thank you for a great video. I love the details you provided regarding the difference between the types of cuttings.

      If you have bottom heat and can protect from the cold, you can do it year-round! Just going to need to create a stable, warm, humor environment.

    • @smalltrees

      In the top there are some. None in the bottom. I try to control the humidity and soil dampness by adding water every week or two when the sides of the container stop showing a lot of condensation.

    Great vis. I did a branch from all of my trees stuck in sand late janruary. 80% started growing leaves about 30 days later. Another 30 days and 1/2 have roots. Then it snowed on Easter, and got down to 30 degrees. Killed 1/2. I'm so mad.. Left a like

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  4 года назад

      You can use the soil that was too fine to go in your pots if you want. If you want to buy from the store, perlite works very well and is cheap.

    • @smalltrees

      No bother at all. I would try to keep the humidity up, so a medium-sized container would be best. If inside, some indirect sunlight would be good.

    how much time they need to root?

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  4 года назад +1

      If you put them on a heating pad, three to four weeks for good roots probably. Without bottom heat 5-6 weeks is a guess.

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  3 года назад +1

      As long as I can see humidity on the walls and the soil seems moist, I don't water. Maybe a cup of water a week, if that.

      Thank you! It is late in the year to start cuttings, but if you can keep bottom heat on them and maybe keep them in the garage (depending on your location) they may do okay. I have been working on a big non-bonsai project and I'll share it soon. First time doing any masonry/carpentry/construction so I am not comfortable sharing the process (I did a ton of stuff wrong), but I'll show the finished product and tell how to make it.
