    Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” 2 And the word of the Lord came to him: 3 “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4 You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” 5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. 7 And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
    HIDING BY THE BROOK CHERITH.
    Definitely, it took courage for Elijah to confront the wicked king Ahab with God’s judgment of drought And, he showed the same courage too in living solitary beside the brook Cherith. That the God who told him to do so, He would sustain him supernaturally. The God who led him to the spotlight had in a sudden placed him away in solitude.
    Like Elijah, are we ready to follow his directions courageously? Should it happen, do we believe that He has His best interest for us? God may led us away from a known position into an unknown for a reason. The hiding at the obscure brook Cherith was preparing Elijah for the fighting at the top of Mt. Carmel.
    On the other hand, the ravens bringing him bread and meat during the morning and evening for years was no less than a miracle. How could unclean birds gather food daily, drop them at the same place at regular intervals for years? It’s only because of God’s sovereignty that this could be explained. Moreover, he saw the source of his drink dwindling as the days unfolded. This was understandable because there was no rain in the land. It should had prompted him to ask, “Where could I get my next drink should the brook dries up completely?”
    Our faith is nurtured by our extended time of solitude with God. There is no short cut. Moses had to become unknown for 40 years before God called him. Joseph was forgotten for almost 20 years before God removed him from prison. David hid in caves for years before he rose at the throne. Waiting is an essential part of our faith growing process.
    Undoubtedly, it was God’s idea for Elijah to hide by the brook. Don’t count it strange when at times He wants you to exit from the limelight into the unknown. It’s just temporary as the crysallis forming into a beautiful butterfly.
    We may say then;
    “ I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living!
    Wait for the Lord;
    be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord!” [Psa 27:13,14]
