    It’s the scariest metalwork a beginning gunsmith will ever do, threading that first barrel tenon and cutting the chamber. Thanks for sharing, I’m in Arizona and my gunsmith buddy in North Dakota, babysat me through it on the phone. The experienced mentoring is priceless, wise counsel makes the job easier.

    This type of video and the upcoming detail are sorely needed. Great job, great editing and kudos! Keep it up those of us involved in metalworking and precision rifle work really appreciate what you are doing.

    Gavin, extreme talent. Thanks so much for this video. I've worked with my metal lathe (Grizzly 13") since 1999 and to watch the little bits you showed was very impressive work.
    Again thanks, all thumbs up.

      Thank Kit- are you going to chamber some rifles with that lathe of yours?

    I appreciate the book mentions. I would love to be able to chamber my own barrel one day and collecting various books on manufacture and design is absolutely fascinating.

    I’m glad you did this on a model 70. I’m sick and tired of 700’s.

    I would love to see more work on the Winchester model 70 actions. I own several I've collected over the years. I have pre 64, the push feed models, and the newer controlled round feed. Everyone out the tinkers with Remington 700 actions but not much on the old Winchester actions. I've got a pre 64 model in 264 win mag the bore is shot out. I want to put it back in 264 win mag. Probably gonna send it out to be rebarreled, but would like to get a better idea of the options I have available as far as twist rate and barrel length. Triggers and fire control etc.

    Pro-Tip
    Use card stock in your barrel vise insted of tape. The adhesive on tape acts like lube when you put pressure it it.

    Can you mention more about the bluing process and can you use that process on aluminum ... thanks

    • @brandontscheschlog
      @brandontscheschlog 6 лет назад

      Cold blue for steel is different than cold blue for aluminum. There are many different methods and products. Cold blue is more of a touch up because it just doesnt penetrate the steel.

    Why don’t you put the recoil lug on when checking headspace?

    • @Ultimatereloader
      @Ultimatereloader  Год назад

      The Winchester Model 70 has an integral recoil lug- it's part of the receiver body :)

    Did you ever do any load work up and test the accuracy? I have this exact same rifle I bought new and the accuracy is fading. It was easily a 1/2 minute gun originally. I’m thinking of rebarreling with custom with slightly tighter twist for some heavier bullets. Thanks

      Amy M Amy- it would have been a 2 hour video :) - In all seriousness I will be going into a lot of these topics in more detail I’ll have to break them apart into multiple videos of course so stay tuned glad you’re watching!

    Instead of measuring the root of the threads, a more accurate and practical method is measuring over thread wires and calculating the thread root diameter.

    I was hoping to see more lathe action and less describing what goes into the process...Still a great video but I will stick to the reloading side of your videos.

    • @Ultimatereloader
      @Ultimatereloader  6 лет назад

      I get what you are saying- hard to fit 3 hours of material into one video- this was the high-level one. I'll be doing MANY rifle builds, and most will focus on particular processes and operations, and I'll go into way more depth (along with Lathe fundamentals - a series coming up on Making with Metal). Thanks for watching!

      gavintoobe Ok thanks for the explanation. May I suggest Clickspring's older videos? He works with brass but you may get a few ideas from there to what to make the videos like...
