    Just bought a FZ-3 last week and played it a couple hours and was blown away with the fuzz almost all the way up. Bought a second for collection. It’s hard to explain the feel of this pedal but it’s sustain us insane and single notes are awesome! Highly recommended and I’ll say it better than FZ-2.

    I like Boss Pedal’s naming conventions over many other pedals because the pedals name tells you what is does. You can’t have better marketing than that.

    Have owned 4 analogue fuzz's over the years... I didn't really get on with any of them. Some sounded positively bad even though they were rather expensive. I thought i'd give this pedal a go as I found one on ebay for a snip, very happy I did. The fuzz face is nice, the maestro setting is very harsh but great for that Lemmy sound if you use it on bass... If you roll down the highs you can just about use it on a guitar. The Octavia setting isn't too obvious, sounds good on bass too. Thought fuzz was not for me, glad to have been proved wrong.

    I think out of all the demos I ever heard of guitar players giving demos of guitar pedal, I'd say you are the best at it. Very conniving demos...Most of my pedal selections were based on many of the demonstrations you did...Just thought I let you know dude...I'm 59 and still rockin like I was 15....still playing in good classic rock bands...

    I have this pedal, as well as some other Fuzz pedals, colorsound DAM fuzz sound, a germanium Fuzz Face, MKII Sharpetone tonebender, Colorsound mark IV tonebender and some big Muffs. This pedal is a great pedal it has a nice treble edge which gives the fuzz more clarity so it doesn't sound so muffled. I really like the Oscillating fuzz sound and the Maestro setting. pretty versatile Fuzz box.

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos
    @ProGuitarShopDemos  11 лет назад +11

    The octavia setting has always been an octave up, never below. The trick to getting the octave up ( and this is with the original pedal) is to use your guitar's neck pick and play above the 12th fret. It is not like today's pitch shifters, it is subtle.

    I read your comment and agree that the Big Muff is a pretty good pedal as your comment suggests. This is coming from me and certainly doesn't reflect everyone's opinion. I like collecting gear and Boss and MXR products rate high on my list of favourites. "Who in their right mind buys a digital fuzz?", you ask. I haven't yet had the chance to test this Boss Fuzz but I have the feeling that it sounds pretty good. For guys like me, though, I simply like collecting different pedals digital or not.

    • @rolando_gelatinosa
      @rolando_gelatinosa 5 лет назад +8

      Sonic Titan corksniffers will be corksniffers. Blindfold them & they can never differentiate Gibson from an Epiphone, Fender from a Squire, Sabian from a Zildjian, Marshall from a Vox and so on and so forth. If it costs more, then it’s better than cheaper ones because they like to get economically ripped off...

    So I just plugged one of these in, and it is a good pedal. What I like about is it is versatile, you get three distinct fuzz tones in one box. Furthermore the germanium transistor tones are pretty good. This is significant because real germanium transistors are very finicky. Pedals with these transistors will sound different pedal to pedal, and more significantly will change with the temperature. That this pedal will stay stable despite the temperature and probably be consistent pedal to pedal makes it pretty great in my book. On some sounds like overdrive, I don't ever want digital modeling, but on a fuzz it is perfectly fine, because fuzz pedals already sound funky and weird. I think it is a pretty good pedal, and I am a person who isn't a big Boss pedal fan. Playing it live will be the litmus test, however. If I change my mind, I will update this post.
    Oh, and read the instructions. The middle setting does not work until you get the gain setting passed noon. I bought the pedal used, thought there was a problem, and thought there might be an internal bias control, and went online for the user manual. It explains this fact. The middle setting only wakes up when the gain setting is past noon. Hope all this helps.

    Personally, my biggest issue with this pedal is that it replaced the earlier FZ-2 and FZ-3, which were not modelling pedals at all. They're both rather respected in the stoner/doom community, and they were affordable because they weren't boutique.
    This one seems geared towards classic tones, and it fulfills that role well.

    This FZ-5 is a great pedal because 1. 3 fuzzes in one 2. Additional gain on tap 3. More reliable and not tempermental and finally 4. Looks badass in that silver enclosure.

    Besides Andy's studio-musician level skills, I think that a great tube source tone and the compression are what make the gear demoed sound so great. Just listen to his voice. No-ones voice sounds like that naturally. There's a lot of filtering and various sound optimization going on. ProGuitarShop sets the bar.

    On PGS's site, you'll find analog options in the same price range as this pedal. I am frugal when it comes to buying new gear, though the gear that I do have is good quality and useful. When I was younger, I made a lot of impulse buys on gear, which has led me to become a more informed consumer. Now, I do research before I buy gear, so that when I hear a cool demo featuring studio recordings of Hendrix covers, I don't immediately need to go out and buy it.

    I'm surprised I didn't read it here somewhere, but Fuzz-Pedals are not meant to be used with clean set amps! In a demo you'd have to, I guess, but they come to life when combined with an overdriven amp, and the two sounds blend! I own a FZ-5 and in Fuzzface-Mode put in front of a crunchy Marshall, the sound is really killer!

    • @pizzapie4me

    Interesting point, but the tonal differences are obvious. Since the digital part is translated back into analog somewhere along the signal path before it hits the output jack, there must be a few analog components doing the job, either on the chip, or the board. The tolerance (accuracy) of resistor and cap values on ICs isn't that great. You probably already know that.

That said, I've avoided using them because they won't play nice with my wireless (acts as a buffer). However, something like this would work, since it's not a 'true' fuzz circuit, correct? Perhaps you can make a recommendation on a different octa fuzz type pedal that will work correctly after a wireless. thx.

    You know a lot more than I do about the engineering side. I'm sure you have a great ear too (but mine ain't bad either). I think I read somewhere that "resisters" inside an IC can vary much more than the 1% discrete components (and 1% is surprising, must be pretty costly even at volume pricing), and if any part of it contains analog circuitry, that might account for distinct differences in actual sound, which otherwise has no explanation - at least not yet. Best regards.

    its predecessor actually. fuzz a different gain structure than the average distortion or overdrive pedal. so you can imagine: a clean sound has a round sound wave structure. a distortion pedal has a slightly flattened top with round edges to that flat think. a fuzz sound has waves that look like they are simply cut off on top, looks like some kind of saw, and sounds like it too. some kind of dirty, sawy, scratchy distortion.

    it's supposed to be really subtle, and try your neck pick up and playing at a bassy-er timbre higher up on the fret board.

    I think thats how it works with just about any pedal, but I think the fuzz market is big enough that I could find something else that would satisfy if these become sought-after

    Thanks. It's already gone so I can't try it but I'm fairly sure I tried all pickups in all positions. I'd hoped to use it for the Blue on Black solo by Kenny Wayne Shepherd. KWS does use the neck pickup and goes down to the 10th fret (close enough), but there is no problem hearing the octave. He's using a much better pedal, but one that this pedal should at least be able to approximate. Didn't work for me, or on some of the RUclips demos I've seen. Anyway, thanks again for the info.

    my friend had the same problem when he got his ac15, we made him try it out at GC too, but ... you know... it still sounded close to me but everyones computer speakers aren't the same either, hell, I got 70's basketweave 8" boxes wired up, theyre bigger than my monitor.
