Great track at the beginning Rhett! Super cool!
Whoa, Rhett. I'd pin that compliment. The kami of the demo intros himself.....
Thanks Pete!!
Killer track. Please put it out somewhere on Spotify, Bandcamp or wherever for us to listen to or even buy - it's just to great to go to waste :-) Love the progression. Rocks!
Liking the Novo
for real, mighty surprised (i know you're a great musician, but i'm really picky lol) i truly love it a lot.
*edit* not sure why i wasn't subscribed, but i for sure am now!
Arigato Rhett! Thanks for featuring the FZ-1W
Bruh! WTF! It was supposed to be Boss FZ-2W! 😭
The doom community has an unquenchable hunger for that one. We need to be able to perform Dopethrone-worship like the "Great Old Ones" intended.
I feel betrayed.
Good advertising. I just added one to my wishlist
Hey!!!!!!!!! The abbreviation FZ in modern music has stood for Frank Zappa, since the mid 70's! (
Maybe Rhett should be thanking BOSS as they sponsored the video, I'm sure he did.
Ayy !
こんいちは!
Who hates fuzz??????
While other people can do wonderful things with fuzz, I can not. Therefore I am not particularly enamored with the effects.
The let’s-try-all-knobs-at-noon-guys…🙄
Rhett getting all shoegaze.... need a full album now.
If it’s not called Shullgaze then I’m rioting lol
Yes please...
@@MrCaddySlash Haha! Shullgaze! I like that 🤣
When did you heared shoegaze ?
@@yanthetrooper67 1 min 20 secs.
I see what you're doing... trying to convert all the tubescreamer lovers...
Good job.
Have you tried Fuzz face into Tubescreamer?
@@stanislavmigra Yes, I actually have a tubescreamer. Occasionally I find the sound to my liking, but since building my fuzz pedal and Bluesbreaker pedal I've noticed all the same problems with it that Rhett described in one of his last videos. I've basically not really used my TS-9 more than like twice this past couple years, so I'll either mod it or sell it and build something (subjectively) better.
My take on Fuzz. I started playing guitar in 1960, played Chet, The Ventures and sang etc. Used guitar clean for years. Bought my first (and only Fuzz pedal) in late'66. It's a Gibson Maestro Fuzz-Tone. During that period I played through a Black Face Pre-CBS Fender, Super Reverb. I have owned many amps, but that is still my Go-To Amp. The last band I was in was called The Coelacanths, in 2005. Me, my original drummer and bass player from the band I was in when I bought the Fuzz-Tone and various other members gigged for about 3 years. I love fuzz. I have never needed any other Fuzz pedal. All I ever have to do is put in a new battery when needed. I don't understand why someone wouldn't like that sound. It was used sparingly and appropriately, when a song needed it only. I no longer gig but we Jam still, and I still use that pedal and amp.
@@sergedenovo2389 Jesus Christ dude lmao
You're never too old to gig out until you're pushing up daisies. 😉
Very good post, sir. Have you seen the OneSpot 9v battery adaptor plug? It plugs into those old pedals into the battery terminal. It'll save you a ton in battery costs.
Awesome to see you go more in depth about guitar volume effecting tone. People never bring it up online but it's a massive difference maker!
From the very first time I heard Spirit in the Sky, fuzz has been my favorite guitar effect. Now that I'm learning to play I use it as much as possible. Thanks for the insight into how many ways fuzz can be applied in a track.
Rhett, I loved the production at the beginning. That was one of the coolest ones I’ve seen you do. Great job!
You're the one who introduced me to why I needed a Fuzz pedal on my board a year or more ago. Still wanting a Mythos fuzz
Fuzz Addict here! I got my first fuzz 12 years ago; It was an MXR MC 402, which is called a boost/overdrive, but is based on the Freddie Fuzz. The next two were the EWS Fuzzy Drive, then the Retro Channel The Fuzz, which is a Mk. 2 ToneBender 'clone'. This past weekend I put the Retro Channel on the board again and it was Awesome! It works well with humbuckers, but singles work just as well. I have a reissue EH Ram's Head that is really good too. Great video!
This video helps me to make an amazing fuzz sound for the first time. Thanks Rhett.
You really coax great Tone out of Fuzz pedals. Always benefit from watching your walk-through posts. There’s a huge squishiness that doesn’t always come through in other demos?
Fuzz is so interactive, that I think a lot of players get thrown off? You have really helped me to TOTALLY get into Fuzz. I LOVE it! Way more than “ordinary” High Gain. There’s a FILTHINESS that you can ONLY get from Fuzz!
Great video as always. Longtime Boss FZ-3 user which appears to be the inspiration for the design of the FZ-1w. I preordered the FZ-1w immediately when it was announced without even watching a video. Now I’m assured I made a great purchase decision.
Finally!!! Thank you Boss for for choosing to finally release this and thank you Rhett for making this video.
This is a great and easy to follow demonstration of some of the Cool things you can do with a fuzz and how to do it. Thanks, RS
A Fuzz Face type circuit is a great place to start.. Super versatile and not overwhelming, but the volume knob is key! 👍 I think my favorite fuzz pedal is the VFE Fuzz Duo though.. It has both switchable germanium & silicon transistor options, so it pretty much does everything. 😎
Vfe are underrated
Really well written video covering the nuances of fuzz for the uninitiated and practical demo + tips - nice work!!
I agree with you... my favourite pedal is fuzz... This video helps me a lot cause I have just learnt all you talked about and wondered if I was doing it right.. Thanks great video Rhett.
Great video on fuzz! My first distortion type pedal was a muff fuzz in 1980. I loved that pedal and after a few years it stopped working and unfortunately, I moved away from fuzz into regular distortion pedals. However, I've circled back around to fuzz pedals again and after seeing this video I'm excited to get the Boss Fuzz pedal that you are showcasing. Thanks for the great explanation into the various uses for fuzz!
I grew up hearing fuzz, I loved it then and I loved it now. Nice to see people using it again. You can definitely overdo it, I love how you use it in that opening track.
Hi Great Video Rhett! I like that you did not simply run through the pedal characteristics just like many others will do (which is always useful don't get me wrong). But it is nice that you instead show how to use it for those who have difficulties handling them (I am one of them). Also it looks to me like a great alternative to all those who could not get a TB-2w. Hopefully this one will be in the same price range as other Wazza Craft;
Good review Rhett! I actually learned something about my pedal! This is my first visit and I will subscribe and poke through some of your earlier videos for info on my other pedals. Thanks!
Great tips! Don't be afraid!
Making friends with fuzz is easier if you understand what it is. When you gently overdrive a tube amp (edge of breakup) you tend to get even-order harmonics, which are essentially stacked octaves. This doesn't add much dissonance, so doesn't need to impact what you play. But when you hard clip, especially with most solid state gain stages, you get square waves, which stack ODD-order harmonics. This is good for making single notes sound more like power chords, but since it's adding 5ths etc, it gets ugly fast if you hit it with complex intervals, especially thirds. You can use fuzz comfortably dialed back, as Rhett demonstrates beautifully here, or use it to brighten & enrich simple lines & punchy rhythms. Less is more, listen and adjust.
Very impressive intro Rhett, what a amazing approach to the solo, really enjoyed this one man
Six months ago I was one of those guitar players we never really “got“ fuzz and I’ve been playing for over 20 years. Used a lot of hi-gain Marshall amps live over the years and considered that pop-punk rock tone to be my home base.
Needless to say, I’ve recently acquired a jhs 3-series fuzz after realizing I wanted to build a new pedalboard and expand my tonal palette and now I’ve been looking to buy an EHX op-amp fuzz to get the Billy Corgan pumpkins sound. That modern fuzz sound. Before I got a chance to buy that pedal I saw this lovely thing pop up a few days ago and I immediately ordered it from SweetWater mi utes after learning that it existed, mostly because I know how things sell out nowadays and I didn’t want to miss this pedal. I “get” fuzz now and use it when jamming with my brother all the time now. It’s one of my favorite types of distortion. It’s just so cool and chewy. Of course I’m also in deep with pedals now, having recently bought a photocell univibe and the new mxr deep phase. I must be trying to channel my inner-hendrix subconsciously….
7:04 onwards... I think that guitar and the fuzz pedal were makeing love!! ;-)
That Novo Serus J floors me (in a good way!) every time I hear it played. It may look a bit strange but it's definitely my favourite of all the guitars Rhett plays.
I’m not into the really high gain fuzz sounds but enjoy using a fuzz for low gain sounds in a swampy blues context. I know it’s not transparent but I think fuzz can add loads more character than an overdrive (especially the TS 😉). Great video Rhett.
Holy mackerel Rhett! That was insanely great intro! Love it!
You've definitely peaked my interest in fuzz now... you did an earlier video I remember featuring the JHS series of fuzz pedals and that video helped me realize that I was a fan of the Tone Bender circuit. Now I haven't yet used it but it's definitely on my list of new gear. I can't say that I ever "hated" fuzz but it's clear I just didn't understand it and most likely just associated it with stoner rock or doom metal which wasn't my thing... but the context of using it the way you've explained in this video definitely makes me want one now...cheers
I fell into the "don't know what to do with fuzz and kinda scared camp" - now I actually have some fuzz options I really like its interaction with guitar volume and turning back the guitar volume and layering it on an amp at the edge of break up creates a really nice OD tone which is more my bag (I layer all my dirt/distortion over amp breakup)
Oh, and please do a video on the TripleGraph.
Very informative. Thanks for showing how different types of guitars require setting adjustments. Off to work on my LP fuzz settings…
Hi Rhett. Excellent video. Thanks to you and a few other channels I finally took the plunge and bought a mini Fuzz Face (red) and it's now on my rather minimal board as an always on pedal. I just use the guitar volume pot to get what I need out of it as a when. After the fuzz I just have a compressor and a klon-clone overdrive in that order. I run the lot into the UAFX Ruby and out into Logic. I can't recommend fuzz highly enough. Many thanks again for giving me a different way to think about this effect and do something genuinely new (for me at least).
The opening jam was fantastic! Bravo good sir!
Well...I learned something today. Rolling off the Strat volume gradually cleans up the sound in a musical way. Well done.
I rarely take my Strat above 7.
this is probably one of the best videos I have seen from you, tone sounds great
Great video! Being more a sound tech and bass player - I never really got into fuzz pedals. Just thought "Ok, the guitarist should get the right amp and then ... go!" But great explanaiting / demonstration. Need to dig deeper into fuzz sounds! Thanks a lot!
Rhett, that was fargin fantastic. Man, you’re the bomb !!!
Great video! The guitar volume knob is one of our most important tools.
My vote would go to guitar strings. With out strings….. :-)
I've been studying Hendrix and have not used a Fuzz before. I was on Amazon and found a $25 Azor Fuzz. Got one today and plugged into my Marshall plus Boss reverb and DD3. I was able to recreate Jimi's smooth Fuzz tone. Something to consider. I'm an overdrive guy normally but I'm adding this to arsenal with my Nobels ODR mini. Thanks for this lesson.
This is the best Rhett Shull video i've ever seen. Well done!!!
yeeeeeeeeah, i really missed the intro tracks, you are just so good and the tracks are fantastic.
very nice intro jam! I love the electrified acoustic sound and the drums sounded super good! Also the second section caught me off guard, and is the final straw that caused me to make this comment. Cheers!
Amazing production. Thanks man
Rhett, you have managed to get me over to the Fuzz-side of life. Got a Way Huge Swollen Pickle MK II recently and I love it. Very flexible and less knarly then other Fuzzes
Rhett's demo was good, but the demo on the Boss channel is one of the best demo's I've seen on any pedal.
Was just noodling with my fuzz pedal, opened RUclips and saw you posted this. Love fuzz and will watch anyways
I used to not like fuzz pedals but that changed a couple of months ago. Fuzz pedals are great. They respond differently every type of pickups more so than any other drive pedal. Also beware that there are too many weird sounding ones as well. One thing i don't understand is the weirder they get the more expensive they become. Start with a big muff or fuzz face type of pedal, you can't go wrong with those.
FZ-1W is cool but not as cool as the SH1Z
Very clever! Idiggit!👍
I think the SH1Z is developing a cult following, they may just have to name it that!
@@titansky I think it would be silly not to name it the SH1Z
I prefer the rare SH1Z-LE
Fo-SHIZ-le!
I love the tones on this pedal! Dying to hear a demo on bass
Rhett, sweet tones man! I’m a fellow fuzz lover! Just got a Fulltone 69 (basically a modded FF) love it!!
I just bought this pedal and it is amazing. Quiet and the most versatile fuzz I’ve ever used. The best imo ! I put mine after wah in the chain of effects. It can get as dirty as you want and cleans up really good when you roll the volume off. Great tips in your video.. Thanks for sharing!
I love Fuzz, on my board is the EHX Satisfaction (or as I call it: the "in-your-face-Fuzz"). And it is certainly, besides the Wah, the pedal with the most tonal variations, as I get a great sound when rolling off the tone knobs on my guitars. This takes a lot of the "in your face" and enriches the sound immensely!
Ya Rhett, I’m one of those people that don’t even think about using a fuzz. After this video tho, the different ways you showed using it, man….. I wanna try these! Great vid bro. Cheers!
Bought one of these and the new compact version of the Reuss Goo-Goo fuzz for a birthday gift to myself. Looking forward to trying out the Boss Fz-1W.
Cool video. Maybe do a part two where you go deeper with more examples of the ways you can use it in a band setting to fill in like you talked about. I could have used this in the 90’s for my band PEEL which was heavy grungy drop d territory. We were a trio with me as singer. With this I could have done single note lines but have it sound fuller. Great tip.
Big fan of the clean boost example. I've actually used that for hi-gain metal. RAT pedal through a Marshall 2203. Slayer becomes Carcass.
The video work from Chris just makes everything look so cool
I think I might just use this as a saturation pedal to back up my box of war as a serious distortion box. Thanks for the awesome tip Mr. Shull!
I got my DOD FZ52 classic fuzz, brand new, for Christmas in 1990, and still have it!
My first fuzz as well at the beginning of 90’s … still have it too
Another great video. Would love to see a full out demo review video of your Sola Tone Bender.
Been checking this out and best Fuzz pedal I’ve heard… GO BOSS!!
Killer opening track. I wouldn't have expect something like that out of you, so thank you for surprising me!
The trick is finding the right amp and fuzz combination. Then keep the amp at a level that you can control the fuzz tone through the volume on the guitar.
That's a great demontration. I never saw the use of fuzz, but it is rather cool, indeed ! Regards from France.
I do all of my solos with the big muff deluxe, I love Fuzz and I never get bored of the sound
Love mine too! I like using it with an expression pedal and tweaking the edge on the fly for added dimension and face melt! (
@Eric Robertson Well Russians still haven't shed themselves of the red stripes!
Love the opening track!! cool stuff
I started out as a thrash and death metal guitar player and have recently been trying to branch out into other things. I got a fuzz pedal today (14 years into playing)
Gonna try to keep everything in mind mentioned here
Man, I don't what you played in the beginning, but that was awesome !!!
Crap I really liked that song at the beginning. Sounds great. Love your playing on it
Your videos are always good. I use two fuzz boxes by Big Muff and two wah wah pedals one Cry Baby and one Vox. I use 4 pedals total and that's all I need. I saw Eric Clapton twice and he used no pedals at all. Thanks for being on You Tube.
Rare that I comment on these videos, but great job here Rhett! The intro tones are simply amazing, very Radiohead esque, loved it!
the only fuzz I've ever really liked (so far) is from the song Spirit in the Sky. Norman Greenbaum had some unit built into his guitar and I've never heard any other fuzz pedal capture that (yet).
I love your videos, Brett! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and cool things in life with us!
I've never been a fuzz fan but a couple of weeks ago I seen some demo vids of the D.O.D Carcosa and went and bought one. I have to say it's blown me away, my strat sounds nice and fat, my Les Paul sounds amazing and this pedal does it all from overdrive to beautiful vintage distortion through to crackling fizzing fuzz...amazing!!
Carcosa is the only fuzz on my bass board. Hard to beat at its price point.
The Carcosa is brilliant, I used to use it for bass as well as guitar. Then I got a Brute Fuzz (mine is pre-vintaged voice era) from SpiralElectric FX, Tom's new company and that's now on my new bass board, and it's utterly fantastic. Fuzz is life, fuzz is love. Go check out Tom's stuff, you get such a lovely package with your fuzz too. I'm a total convert!
@@ewetoo yeah its a nice heavy sounding fuzz, just checked it out. The black spiral sounds really good as well...good call....
Gotta say never have been much of a fan of Fuzz or the sounds, but here it sounds great and I will have to reconsider and explore.
Great video! Try running a tube screamer into that fuzz, makes an already winning combination even more winninger!
I have a boss fuzz 2 that I got as a teen in the early 90’s. Totally was able to get the “hey hey my my” Neil Young sound from it. Great.
The intro reminded me of “High” by Tripping Daisy. Awesome video.
Love fuzz but it’s a handful. Best tone advice I ever got was to roll off the volume knob. Drives me crazy when cats just keep it wide open the whole time. Thanks for the vid!
your video was very helpfull Thank you! Love the Intro
Nice opening track Rhett! Would be great to get a vid on how you put these together (if you havent) postprocessing/drum programing etc.
Why do I find myself liking the video before I even watch it on this channel. Because I already know it's gonna be fucking awesome. That's why. Thanks to you and your team for another one!
Cool that you demoed this with a modeling amp. I love and use a Kemper. Yep , the guitars volume knob is the key.
Best intro so far. The shot at 1:47 literally made my jaw drop.
I also love these types of videos ( waiting on the Shoyles fuzz ) but a lot of pedals have a barrier to entry for me as a broke college student. I love listening and getting into pedals, but there isn't anywhere local for me to try them. And for the price point, it's hard to blindly buy off RUclips demos. It would be really cool to see you review or talk about some of your favorite plugins, although I know you're mostly an analog guy. Keep it up, Rhett!
@JRC 4558D just the videography, the gleam of the headstock on the end looked really nice
@JRC 4558D exactly what I said lol
The Shoylegazer
If you can’t buy the pedals. You might try making some. Soldering is not at all hard. And most fuzzes are stupid simple.
@@MooCow2X2 I double this. Even buying broken pedals and repairing them 😃😃😃
A video for the big muff would be great it’s such an amazing fuzz
The latest head turner of a Fuzz for me is the All Pedal Love Machine. A beefed up Lovetone Big Cheese from the 90's. It has the classic silicon thing but you can blend in an octave Fuzz. It can spit, sputter and growl with all that really fat lower mid thing but stay tight and focused as great OD. It has the basic volume, tone and gain but all that good stuff is added or subtracted with a 4th knob . It takes seconds to dial in what you prefer. Not bad... hand made in the US. Only $200 with free shipping too
your intros are epic man. great playing as always
looking forward to your new studio setup video series man!
Some people say: "your first pedal must be an overdrive", whereas I recommend a fuzz as first pedal.
It should be reverb imo unless your amp has it.
@@Icebergslim91 Well, I use Fender amps. They have got spring reverb (all I need is fuzz... and spring reverb XD).
Fuzz is awesome, and potentially more than just an Effect. Many/most Effects enhance the tone and sound of the guitar. Fuzz can do that, but it can so radically transform the sound of the guitar that it becomes like playing a totally different kind of instrument. I think Fuzz may have been the first "Effect" to do that, and it remains one of best at it. Great video. Boss found the right person to demo their new pedal. 😎
I owned Boss Hyper Fuzz FZ-2 ..l wore that sucker OUT!! LOL..loved it. It was a really versatile pedal. It would go from mild to wild, even through to uneven clips and just crazy fizz if you wanted. Boss does good fuzz, this pedal sounds pretty good.
Great demo Rhett been looking at this and Keely fuzz bender
I can't recall never not loving fuzz. In saying that it still depends on the context and the style.
However, it still took me a while to get the hang of using them. Depending on the circuit, some can be super fussy and you just end of with a mess.
Placement on your board, amp set up etc can prove paramount.
Nice intro shoegaze effort...don't recall hearing you play like that before....sweet. 😎
FUZZ is king! Thank you! My favorite fuzz pedal right now is the Orange Fur Coat octave fuzz.
Great demo and advice 👍🏻
I have 3 fuzz pedals but don't know how to use it. Thanks man!!!!
Ohhhh, I love fuzz. It just took me a while to understand it! My wife bought me a Big Muff NYC back in 2014. Haha, 10 years later, I’ve only just started messing around with it. Paired with a Boss SD-1 and a fairly clean amp it ROCKS!
Very informative video. The Behringer Super Fuzz ( super inexpensive ) is the copy version, and Very close, in features & sound, to this Boss.
Now I'd listen to an album full of that intro track, kudos!
Add: You can put a tube screamer overdrive in front of the fuzz and make it sound like a middy tight distorion. Or i also love Bluesbreaker style od in front of fuzz to clean it up very nicely.
Dont add buffered bypass in front of germanium fuzz tho, it messes with the signal.
The way I put it when I listed one common order for pedals was "some pedals are divas and have to go first, or near first, and the rest of this list comes after them." Germanium fuzz was the textbook example as far as I was concerned.
@@mal2ksc Yup tough mit true bybass you can slap an od in front of germanium, i have a tubescreamer style od from jam pedals in front of my germanium fuzzface, sounds killer
