Leaving a comment in case it helps someone. I installed a new marble vanity with a new pop up drain and I tightened the heck out of that nut and it still kept leaking right where the large gasket meets the bottom of the sink. And eventually what I tried that fixed it was to flip the gasket upside down. Yep seems crazy, but it worked and it doesn't leak anymore. And the reason why is when they make these cultured stone sinks they don't clean out the inner diameter of the drain very well (has a rough uneven edge) but they do machine the bottom surface. So by flipping the gasket it was up against that nice clean even side and it sealed right up. I could have went the silicone route but I didn't want a bunch of silicone in there for the next time the drain has to be replaced. Another option to try if you are stuck.

I ran across your video I just purchased a new bathroom faucet, I’m single trying to figure how to install the plunge part , I was a Lowes I was told you shouldn’t use putty on ABS plastic pipe or the plunge , I was told to only use clear silicone. Interesting you add the putty. Good video.

I know it's a pain in the rear, but you might want to redo it so you don't have a huge leak in the near future. Amazon has some really nice pop up drain assemblies for not much money and usually free shipping. Way to DIY! Always saves a lot of money and you learn new skills. Keep it up!

I needed a video that shows each part of the assembly and parts. I had searched and searched. This is the ONLY video that shows what I need. Somebody disassembled and lost all the assembly parts and I needed to know what part I am missing. So….thank you! I know now which piece is missing. I’ve installed other drains but not a pop up. Other videos literally don’t show each part.

Thank you for this. Just installed a whole new vanity etc and the dang thing is leaking at that top gasket. It just won’t seal. This should def solve the issue!!
Some sink assemblies come with a nylon type of flat washer (called a friction washer) that goes on between the rubber washer and nut that helps prevent the whole assembly from turning as you tighten the nut. Thus no need for the pliers.

Just a caution, if your drain tube or top gasket is made of rubber you don't want to use plumber's putty. Use silicone instead. The instructions will likely mention this if it applies.

So I just remodeled our downstairs half bath including a stand alone vanity and new top however the traditional stopper that came with the faucet set wouldn’t work due to room constraints, also it wouldn’t drain very fast so I changed over to a pop up stopper and it solved both issues.

@@DivineFemEnergy It's not a problem at all. As long as your sink is thick enough, where you install the pop-up drain, in order to hide the spot on the pop-up drain where the overflow water would drain into to go down into your p-trap. Hopefully that makes sense. In a nutshell, you should not be able to see any holes in your drain assembly when you look at it underneath the cabinet where it comes through the sink bowl.
Great video. Any tips if the pop up on a new Delta keeps falling down. Will not stay open? I can pull in open with my fingers but then it falls closed again. It's the new type with no rod arm.
Hi Sarah. Thank you for watching the video. All pop up drains are a little bit different. Usually when that happens it's a few different things. One, the spring might be missing from inside the assembly. Two, it just might need to be screwed tighter. If you grab a hold of the drain pop up assembly and turn it either clockwise or counterclockwise it tightens the assembly up. These might be the fix you need. Hope this helps 👍

What do you do if the stopper does not seal well enough and leaks water quickly?
I find that when you install the drain before you install the sink, you ‘d have a better handle on it, because you can do your work with the sink up side down. of course it’s not always possible, sometimes the sink comes in one piece with the vanity
Hi Selah. Thank you so much for watching the video and leaving a comment. I think you are correct! It would be much easier to do the work on the sink and then install the sink. However, in this situation the sink was already epoxied onto the granite countertop. Most bathroom vanities these days come complete with the sink already installed, making it a bit more difficult to do the plumbing. Thanks again 👍
after screwing around with a new drain, still leaking, the gasket will be tossed replaced with the putty hopefully that will solve the problem thanks

Hi! Thank you for watching the video and leaving such a nice comment. Plumber's putty is great to use because it does not dry out and it easily smashes into all the nooks and crannies. Plus, it is not prone to molding like silicone is. If you are wanting to use silicone, you will need to wait until it is completely dry before you use the sink. They do make silicone putty which comes in small rolls, if you want to give that a try. Best wishes on your project 👍.
So are you saying the plumbers putty is all that’s needed even when the hole is slightly bigger than the drain?

Thanks so much for watching. The washer is an aftermarket 1 1/4" by Keeney. Get up in the plumbing department at Lowe's. Ace hardware and Home Depot should carry it as well.
These tend to leak because water splashes up and gets into the overflow cavity and then water sits on the big gasket/nut. That gasket really isn’t meant to be leakproof l. It’s only there is secure the assembly to the sink. The silicone bead does provide a workaround but many instructions never say anything about doing that. It’s also why if you have taken one of these apart that there will be large build up of gunk in the overflow cavity since water can’t drain from that location.
I wanted to see how the pop up drain connects to the drain pipe system. Mine seems odd.
So how does it connect to the p trap?

Great video exact drain pipe, but my sink does not have the drain holes on the side, will that cause a leak? Should I tape up the Rectangular holes on the sides of the pipe?
Hi Frank. Thanks for the compliment and for watching the video. Some sinks do not have the overflow holes. This pop up drain assembly should still work for you as long as those rectangular overflow drain holes in the pop-up drain are enclosed within the sink. Meaning, when you attach the rubber o-ring flange and gasket under the sink you need to make sure that you cannot see those rectangular drain holes in the pop-up drain assembly. As long as that is enclosed within the sink itself then this assembly will work just fine for you. 👍
Can you please tell me the exact brand of the pop up drain assembly you used and where I can buy it. I also need matte black, which it looks like that is what you are installing. I have been in the process of installing a new faucet and drain assembly for the past week with my pedestal sink and I've run into nothing but problems. Today, I got done, but when I turned the water on, my drain assembly leaks, so I have to start over. I would prefer a pop-up (which this new delta faucet does not come with a pop-up drain assembly); seems easier than the one I have. Your video is very good and I'm thinking I can be successful by following it! LOL (and I have lots of patience and don't want to give up and call a plumber)

Is there anything you can do if the drain hole is smaller than part?
Hi. I think I understand the question....you are asking if the drain hole diameter is smaller than the pop up drain diameter...what can be done? If that is the question, then you need to measure the drain diameter and purchase a pop up drain assembly that is the correct size. You do not want to try to modify the drain pop up assembly or you may run into a leaky end result. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I need instructions on how to take this apart, so I can put it back together again. There isn’t any adjustable rod or anything like that. And the nut that’s really close to the D under closet ceiling just will not come off. I am not gonna spend $125 an hour for a plumber here in Seattle. I’d rather go without a sink. I did get the top of my plunger out but it’s only the decorative top. But I can look down and maybe have something I can pull up on to get the drain out I don’t know I’ll probably break it that’s what comes from being a 71-year-old lady. How do one remove the gasket that's in the sink?
I still have leak from the big nut underneath. On top the piece I only applied putty, not washer. So I am thinking to put a thin washer on top and new putty. Also someone suggest silicon on the big nut for the bottom. Not exactly sure where the leak came from yet.
That's a bummer. I wonder if you just need to try to tighten it a bit more. Sometimes just another quarter twist on the nut is all that is needed. You should not need additional parts that did not come with your kit. They are usually made as all inclusive...minus the putty / silicone.
Ok I installed one today and it won’t stop leaking from the bottom where that thick gasket is. Also the top has a little gap so I always have water sitting up top.
Hi Steve. I hope that you were able to get the sink to stop leaking. Sometimes, an additional 1/4 twist or so on the nut under the sink is all it takes to stop the leak. I did have one comment in a thread below where a person (@gibby1783) stated that they took the rubber washer under the sink and turned it around and reinstalled it. The person stated that just by doing that, the leak stopped. I hope that this information helps you out with your project. 👍
Was wondering,,,,, I was told by a plumber of 40 yr in the business that plumbers putty was not to be used on the blk pvc cause it will dry it out and crack the blk pvc 🤷🏽♂️

I only use the plumbers putty at the metal flange at the top of the pop-up drain. I used a waterproof sealant on the actual black PVC part. Thanks for the comment 👍

Nice job but the box blocked part of the demo. Silicone under sink . No! Spinning the tail piece negates the emphasis on aligning the drain holes on drain piece with sink overflow holes. Minor stuff…yes….but many novice DIY res may not pick these things up
You’re doing OK, except for the box is hiding the drain hole when I have no idea visually what’s going on I’m visual person
How much should this cost to have this done by a handyman?
Hi Martin. I couldn't imagine it being too much. If you supply the materials, a handyman usually charges a 1 hour minimum. Shouldn't take that long to install. Hope that helps you. If course, if you follow the video you can do it yourself 😁. Thanks for watching 👍
I just used plumbers tape in it did the trick for no leaks. To much to add sealant in there.

I have leak at the big lock nut. I will try plumber tape on the big lock nut.

Say , i followed your instructions but the pop up drain continues to leak on the bottom ( note : I applied oates plumber's putty ) 🤔
Did you apply plumbers putty to the top and bottom? I only used the plumbers putty around the drain flange in the sink. I applied a waterproofing sealer (Lexel) at the bottom portion of the flange under the sink. I've done 7 sinks in my house this way...no leaks. You may want to try tightening the washer....might not be snugged up all the way. Also, the black washer that is used before the plastic nut (under the sink) is cone shaped and directional. Is it faced properly according to my video? I purchased that aftermarket washer because it is far superior to most standard washers that come with pop up drain kits. Also, check for cross threading....that will be a leaking nightmare. Hopefully you just need a little tweaking and extra tightening to dry up your sink drain.👍

The picture of pop up drain that you have on your video is not the one you are installing.
It's the same brand, just different pipe color. It installs the same way.

The next person that has to work on this is going to hate you with all of that silicone you used. It is way better to do a little more troubleshooting to find out where your leak is and solve the problem correctly without using silicone. Whenever I do a job I'm always thinking ahead if it needs to be worked on again in the future.

I will skip silicon for now for the big lock nut.
I agree it will be a mess to replace eventually. It’s better to use Teflon tape on the threads instead. I’ve noticed some pop up drains the threads do not go high enough for that to work though. In some situations it’s worth trying to flip the locking nut gasket around. I think a lot has to do with your particular sink since many have imperfections from manufacturing.
Plumbers putty is not compatible with plastic, its petroleum based and will deteriorate the plastic.

Clearly the air holes do NOT have to line up........give engineers a little more credit for making it idiot proof........aka plumber proof.

Too bad...you could have learned something new. The electrical tape is used as a cushion between the teeth of the needle nose pliers so that you do not damage the finish on your pop up drain🤷
