  • Have you seen the CLEAR airport security lines? Perhaps you've wondered how the service differs from the other expedited security programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry. In this video, we're going to review the CLEAR program and share whether we think it's worth the cost.

To be honest, I still haven’t really found a need to use CLEAR. I haven’t been traveling much for work in the past couple of years, and our travels have definitely slowed down this year due to the pandemic. 😔

I've had CLEAR and PreCheck and for years and paying for memberships to both has been well worth it for me. CLEAR jumps you to the front of the entire PreCheck line, then going through security with PreCheck is faster than security without PreCheck 90+% of the time. I've had this good experience in Denver, LAX, LGA, DFW, Austin, and probably some I've forgotten. My one regret is getting PreCheck before CLEAR. When I first paid for CLEAR after a free trial that I lucked into at Denver, I realized CLEAR would have provided a discount on PreCheck or include PreCheck in the price. The potential downside of CLEAR is that it isn't at many airports, generally just in major cities with the exception of some relatively smaller ones like Austin. In fact, LaGuardia was late to get a CLEAR option. If you won't use the few airports or fewer venues where CLEAR is available, you won't get much for your money.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It definitely seems like a valuable service if you’re traveling from major airports regularly, especially during peak hours. 👍

I had free Clear for a year. A rep saw I was freaking out and she pulled me aside and told me about Clear. She asked if I wanted to try it for free and of course I said yes bc I was about to miss my flight! The line at the Newark Airport in New Jersey keep getting longer and longer. Doesn't matter what time of the year. So I had to try it and it was totally worth it!

I love CLEAR and at $99 a year, I think it is worth every penny. You should have stressed the real advantage, which is to skip the one hour or more line to get to the ID check. This week I flew out of Denver and it took me exactly five minutes to do security, start to finish (timed it). One year ago, it took me more than an hour to get to ID check in Denver at this time of year. I only fly once a month with Seattle as a home base but still find this a bargain. I have global entry so TSA pre-check is automatic and it has never taken me more than six minutes to get through everything, even with full carry-ons. Flying can be an awful experience but the combination of CLEAR and lounge access improves it a lot.

Thanks for this video. When clear first opened I joined but subsequently dropped my membership in favor of TSA pre-. After watching your video, I am considering re-enrolling in clear. Over the years the The lines at the airports I use most often Have increased exponentially. It can take quite a while to get to that first TSA checkpoint. At $99 it might actually be worth it.

I've been seeing a LOT of videos saying they store your personal biometric data. Ironically in the begining you even show that one piece on "how it works" where it says it "transforms your biometrics into encrypted code". They aren't storing your biometric data AT ALL. They are storing a hashed representation of your biometrics. Look into MD5 and SHA256. They are probably using one of those algorithms to store your data.

I have both global and clear but there was a time in (Jfk) pre check was so backed up and I was running 🏃🏽 late only had 20 minutes before flight clear pushed me passed the long lines and I still made my flight with 10 minutes to spare!! So I got my money back the first week it saved me a flight ticket 🎫 but I do want to say this if your a holiday traveler clear will save time and money and hassle! But TSA pre is great as well it’s just more and more people are getting enrolled so soon it will be just like any other line in time. I would say if you can afford it and use all the discounts available it should lighten the load a little because now everything is just getting more and more expensive I hope that I helped safe travels to everyone❤️✈️

This benefit am may be worth it if you have a AMEX platinum card that pays for the service, even if you don’t travel much.
I’ve found that 2 of 3 trips it hardly matters, but every once in a while you hit the airport with a very long line (even for TSA pre-check), so it can make the difference.
Also, if you do have the AMEX platinum card you probably want to hit up a lounge before your flight, and any time saved here is extra time to enjoy your lounge membership.

I have clear and I got it for free on a promotion in Cleveland for a trip to Florida. We got it free for 2 months and we could cancel at anytime up to that point so we got our round trip flight free which was a lifesaver. Orlando lines are horrible and on this day Cleveland was pretty bad too and we were slightly behind schedule. While this was a lifesaver up front, in my opinion, Clear isn’t worth it. It’s very expensive if you’re only flying once or twice a year at 179 for the first adult and then an additional 60 per adult per year on top of that EVERY YEAR. We did get to skip long check in lines but we still had to wait in long security lines. If you only fly once or twice a year; this is not at all worth it considering your membership is only good for that year. The only benefit that I like with CLEAR that is different from the others is that children 18 and under are FREE, that’s not always the case with other programs but being that it’s stretched out over several years with Global Entry and TSa precheck, financially clear still isn’t worth it unless you fly several times a year to get your money worth.

One consideration with global entry is where the interview centers are relative to you. For us, the global entry office is about 45 minutes away, while TSA pre is only 20. Still went with global entry anyway, because it was free with CC and if we traveled internationally a few times in the 5 year period, it would easily pay off

I started using clear, because I could use it right on the spot. I didn't have to wait for an appointment to get cleared to use it or anything. It basically let's you cut in front of the regular security line. Yes you still need to go through all the baggage check. I was doing a lot of traveling for work, and I wasn't able to get my appointment for TSA precheck.
Now that if I need to keep traveling for work, which will start up again in August. I can get my TSA pre-check. Hopefully I can get my appointment before my next flight. (But I haven't been able to get an appointment since I applied back in February)

EWR in Newark just added Clear, and I signed up just yesterday when I saw it ... the TSA Precheck line is typically a 10-15 minute wait time and is extremely long, I've seen it much worse, closer to 30 minute wait times, and the Clear line was nothing, there was 2 people checking in at the terminals they have and then they went straight to the security screening which is totally worth it as I travel weekly - every other week, and don't like standing in the lines mainly because of the negative comments and attitudes in those lines, it doesn't keep you lifted mentally ... I've signed up but I still have to enroll apparently, so I'm not sure what I'll have to do once I get there but I'm ready ...

It's a good question. The rumor last year was that CBP was planning to raise the application fee of Global Entry to include any children with the applicant (i.e., children wouldn't need to apply for their own account). However, those plans seem to be delayed or canceled. We're in the same boat with our little one, and are contemplating whether it's worth getting her a GE account or just waiting to see if the changes go into effect.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  4 года назад +1

Penfed is good, but can be a bit of a hassle to get since you need to sign-up for a membership to their credit union. To be honest, I would look at a card that will give you value over the long term, even if it has an annual fee. For example, the IHG Rewards Club Premier has an $89 annual fee, but it gives you a free night every year (which you can easily redeem for more than the annual fee) and it includes credit for Global Entry/TSA PreCheck. Even after the first year, the card is worth keeping if you use the free annual night.

It does seem that you’d skip the ever growing line of people waiting to show their ID’s at TSA✅...which is good, BUT...it also seems a little ‘big brother’-ish to me. Recently enrolled in CLEAR simply because my credit card company gave me a complete credit for the cost of the program. Saved little to no time last month at the Austin airport (had an earli AM flight), TSA line was very short. Return trip from JFK was disappointing, they do not participate in CLEAR. As you pointed out CLEAR only gets you to the TSA checkpoint quicker. Still have to take off shoes, jacket, pull out electronics, etc. I do not see value in the
CLEAR program - which charges per year versus TSA Precheck and Global Entry who charge about the same price for 5 years! I shall not be renewing with CLEAR.

Costs way more than TSA Pre/Global Entry. Much more invasive (iris scans? what the heck?!). Available in way fewer places than any other service. In summary, it's CLEARly not a good option.

I think that it can help at some airports, especially if you're flying through peak times. But for most people (including myself), it doesn't seem worth it. However, some issuers (like American Express) are now including it as a card benefit, so that's something to consider.

It does. It allows you to skip to the front of the TSA Pre Check Line. That can be the difference between enjoying down time at one of the airport lounges or completely missing your flight altogether. If you live near a few airports like I do in NYC (Im surrounded by at Least 3 airports, JFK, LGA and EWR), Then it's definitely worthwhile. Those TSA Lines can get VERY LONG and VERY Busy. I dont have to pay for it with my Platinum AMEX. I linked it with my Delta Skymiles account and get it for free along with the additional person added on ($189 value for free). You can also get it with a United Explorer Card (I heard it's around $119 with it)

It's interesting -- I honestly didn't think it was worth it either, especially since I haven't been in a long TSA PreCheck line (i.e., I haven't been traveling for work in a few years). But a lot of folks chimed in that they've had to wait 1+ hours to pass the TSA PreCheck ID checkpoint when traveling at peak times for work, and have found CLEAR to be so helpful. If it's a matter of saving hours a month, then I can see how it's worth it. 😊

@@TripAstute I worked at tsa Minneapolis airport and we were one of the first to have clear. All it really let you do is hop the front of the line but you'd still need to wait to get through the security checkpoint without cutting anyone. But that's literally only 1/10 times u fly. You'll either save 2 minutes or 30 minutes. But all management cares about is wait times because that's how they get their bonuses. And if clear will help them, that's the only reason they have it. Also clear slides some cash their end. I also want to point out clear isn't very trustable when it comes to security. We had a few security incidents which thankfully my previous fellow officers managed to handle.

    Revelation 13:16-18
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
Not that this is it but, this is more than likely the technology that will be used. Right now, the powers that be are just making the technology commonplace, so that no one gives it a thought when it becomes the system of the Beast. Decide for yourself if this convenience is worth your soul. Again, this isn’t the Mark yet, but this IS the technology.
And you all thought it would be a tattoo or chip, 🤨
