  • Based on the epic poem by Ferdowsi, Illustrations and Design by Hamid Rahmanian, Translation and Adaptation by Ahmad Sadri, Foreword by Shelia Canby
Shahnameh: The Epic of the Persian Kings [The Quantuck Lane Press, dist. by W. W. Norton & Company, hardcover with slipcase, 592 pages, 500+ four-color illustrations, $75.00, ISBN 978-1-59372-051-3], is a new illustrated edition of the classic work written over one thousand years ago by Abolqasem Ferdowsi, one of Persia's greatest poets. This new prose translation of the national epic is illuminated with over 500 pages of illustrations.
Originally written to help protect the millennium-old mythological and epic traditions of Iran amid many turbulent cultural storms, Shahnameh is part myth, part history, beginning with the legend of the birth of the nation and following its tumultuous history through the generations. It contains superhuman heroes, magical birds, heart-wrenching love stories, and centuries-long battles. Over the years, Persianate people have lovingly copied and illustrated the Shahnameh, though the illustrated edition that is widely accepted as the last great masterpiece was commissioned in 1563. Now, four-and-a-half centuries later, we aim to continue this long tradition with the creation of this exquisite edition of Shahnameh for a new generation of readers.
The lush and intricate illustrations in this edition have been created by award-winning graphic artist and filmmaker Hamid Rahmanian, incorporating elements from traditional Persian imagery from the fourteenth to the nineteenth centuries while the new translation and adaptation by Ahmad Sadri, retells the mythological and epic stories of the original poem in prose format. This Shahnameh is an extraordinary literary and artistic accomplishment.

Every Iranian who wants to be genuinely a proud Iranian must read the entire Shahnameh at least once and truly digest the episodes. one hundred years ago the stories of Shahnameh would be expressd in oral history and repeated over and over in teahouses or coffee houses across the country where people would gather and spend hours listening to the story teller. But after the invention of radio and TV this art died down and the new generations are totally ignorant about their cultural history! Alas!

Got this book in the mail this week. Utterly blown away & so glad to have bought it. I'm not Iranian, this story is not part of my own culture but books like this are incredibly important to understand others. Even more amazed to discover the process behind it. A real labour of love.

"shahnameh" is a wonderful book. The book seems to be more scientific encyclopedia rather than an epic opus ,from a paleontologist stand point, since we can find many primitive cryptographic evidences of origin of life, water, flora, fauna. The book implies to "big bang" and how life created after earth's crust began to dried out as black surface of magma then alludes to the comets which brought water for earth and fauna created before flora. shahnameh describes all this genisis at exordium implicitly. it is a "supernatural" book.

SORRY BUT they did NOT RESPECT FERDOSI and SHAHNAMEH - FERDOSI used ALWAYS the NAME IRAN and not Persia !!!! they have disrepected him and IRAN by using the word persia,

this book would be for westerners and they identify with "Persia" more oriental stuff than "Iran". For them it sounds more historically and fabulous than the modern term Iran.
In the Persian version it would be inaccurate using "Pârs" instead "Irân". In the English version it doesn't matter "Persia"instead "Iran".

    • @yourmajesty1361

***** "Irân" actually means "Aryan land" and "Irâni" means "Someone from Aryanland". Avestan word for "Aryan" (noble/free) is "Ayrin" and in modern Persian this is "Ayr".
      So Irân means "Aryan land"
and "Ayr" means "Aryan"" but during Sassanid era people stopped calling themselves "Ayr" and used instead "Erânig" (middle persian for "irâni") to have more connection to "Erânšahr" (=Empire of Iran). But this is really deep theory.from.me

nice video but making a tall claim like " a mythological and epic traditions of IRAN" is a bit unfair to the eastern Persians aka Tajiks. The story of Rostam and Sohrab even takes mainly in eastern present day Iran, central Asia and the north-west Afghanistan which was called khurason and before that Ariana. Ferdowsi belongs to all Persian people so lets learn to share and preserve our common heritage.

I'm Iranian and I agree with you. It belongs to all Persians in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Iran. Most of the stories in Shahnameh happen in modern-day Afghanistan and Tajikstan. In particular, in the city Balkh, or Kabul.

You are totally wrong about Shahnameh Ferdowsi. First of All, Shahnameh does not mean " Book of kings" it means "King of books" which contains all letters from the past. Shahnameh's literature and events is under direct influence of Greek tragic theater literature. Shahnameh literally is about conflict between Eastern Scythian living in Sistan which Geographically was located in Helmand valley south Afghanistan and Aryan tribe that formerly occupied Kabul, Bacteria ( Balkh ), Samangan and Hirata ( Hirat ) in northern Afghanistan. Sistan" = Sith + stan = Land of siths or land of Scythian. Eastern Scythian that formerly lived in central Asia migrated to south after the defeat of Persians in Thermopylae. Persian king Artaxerses I agreed with Scythian migration from central Asia to the south. The Scythian tribe in Sistan called "Pahlava" . They were practicing "Aiin e Pahlavani" . " Aiin means "orders" or "regulations". Rostam who his name was adopted from historical character Rostahm Soran who defeated Crassus in Carae " Harran " in 53 B.C. whit ten thousand Pahlava cavalry man. After the Incident Soran's ( Sorena )name spread every where as a hero and the liberator of Syrian people from the killer of Spartacus. The king who has all orders in his position in Shahname is "Kaykhosro" . The name is adopted as the Immortal character of Shahnameh. Historically Kaykhosro is "Kay Aksaro" "Cyaxares in Greek" the third king of Mede empire who conquered Naynawa the capital and strong remnant of mighty Assyrian empire at 612 B.C.. All eastern Scythian including Pahlavas are mixed Asian and European people. They are being discriminated by northern Aryan for not being pure white. According to stories of Shahnameh, Pahlavas are resisting Aryan racism and following their own Aiin against Aryan cast system that is being enforced on mixed Scythian tribes in the region. Rostam is the torch carrier of Aiin e Pahlavani. Rostam triumphs victory in an epic battle whit prince "Esfandyar" son of Aryan king "Goshtasp" who was send to Sistan to defeat and kill Rostam in order to end " Aiin e Pahlavani". Rostam's father 'Zal" was left in a mountain called "Ghaf" after he was born. Zal's father's name was "Sam" an Aryan chieftain. Sam thrown away his son because he didn't look like an Aryan when he was born. Therefore Rostam's ethnicity is unknown. The new born kid Zal was found in a trench by the legendary bird Simorv or Simorgh. Simorv, Kaykhosro and Zal established Aiin e Pahlavani and Rostam son of Zal was the forth protector of the orders.
