    Hey! I worked on the re-master. I'm glad you are enjoying the re-release and all of the additional work we did to make it feel as best as we could make it. Edward was especially crucial to making things feel the way they do online. There's definitely a lot of "small" changes like this that add up to a vastly different experience to vanilla (like AI, minor weapon rebalances, new monster attacks, etc).
    One small note: the lag compensation *can* be turned off on PC by the host, so not all servers will have anti-lag on, but obviously we recommend that people leave it on because it greatly improves the fun factor for high ping players.
    As much as I would have liked to do full weapon prediction in Q2 re-release, it would have required too many architectural changes that would have also made modding way more difficult compared to vanilla, so hitscan is the only thing that is lag compensated.

      Hey there, thanks for the info! You guys all did a great job and the game feels amazing IMO.
      I was wondering if you happen to have any information on how to run dedicated servers? Is it currently possible? If its not - is it in the works ?
      From my understanding , some people have dedicated servers working in Q1R but they wont show in the in game server browser unless its one of the listen servers made in game. (please correct me if I'm wrong)
      I really hope that in the near future, people can have their servers up 24/7 and that they can be found in game without any 3rd party programs or websites. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
      Again, thanks for all the hard work you all put in, the love shows! :)

      @@fr0by Thank you for the kind words! It's my childhood game, so it's a dream come true to have worked on it in an official capacity!
      We don't support headless/dedicated servers currently, but it is on our list for potential future improvements. I agree that it will be crucial to the long-term support of the game, especially since we'd like to have more "official" support for modded games (that is to say, allowing mods to be searchable/findable on PC and to have things like HTTP downloading in, so people can play new maps and stuff without needing to scan the web to find them).

    И что бы вы думали?
    Оба попали.

    I also feel that, despite some mention of it, there isn't enough praise being given for the AI changes to the enemies. I sum up Quake 2 Remaster as such. It's Quake 2, but better in every way. That improved Tick Rate impacts said AI. All of the small AI tweaks come together to give you a much more dynamic and engaging Single Player experience.

      I like those things, but those new features are part of the reason why old demos are incompatible. So as great as this remaster is, there will always be a need for modern sourceports like Q2PRO.

      @SuperFriendBFG Год назад +2

      @@Wobbothe3rd That's a good point. It does make you wonder how they got the Default Menu Demos to work with the remaster. Perhaps they're only running on the old code? Either way, that's fine.

    I don't think you have to lead at all in the Quake II Remaster, you just gotta trust the shot the crosshair and compensate for any delay is all since the visual hit registration can be like 10 miles away from an enemy player. In some ways it is like Quake 3 Arena from experience as well, but how to aim is just trusting the crosshair and compensate for delays. I'm still the number one railer in instagib every time even at my max ping of 130 - 180 I set for myself. I prefer not to suffer any worse than that.

    I didn't try the remaster much. Since I've been using awesome ports since almost 2 decades I didn't saw a reason to switch to the remaster.
    But then I saw this video... Being in Argentina prevents me of playing on most servers because of the high ping.
    But when I tried the multiplayer after watching this video I was shocked. In fact using the railgun I sucked for a few days until I got used to shooting at the crosshair.
    It was so good that I started to dominate servers.
    I wish we had this back in the day.

    Original quakeworld (with its modern updates) has the best netcode, including crazy things like built in proxy support, ability to add latency to make games fairer and so on. Reflex is also amazing. Upping tick in the q2 rerelease probably makes it feel better than q2 but there is no way this makes it the best multiplayer netcode ever, particularly since you do not mention roll back and with almost instant shooting players can be behind walls on their screen (on 180ms) when you shoot them, resulting in them dying in cover.

    I'm thinking of getting this, so we can try the Local Split Screen MP. But the characters move too fast in comparison to the other shooters we play.
    Is there an opinion in the Custom Menus to slow things down?
    Even if I adjust to this breakneck speed, my opponents here surely won't. And most likely will end up smashing their controllers to the ground after I get to zip around them while firing Rockets. Not that I would blame them.

    • @fr0by
      @fr0by  Год назад +3

      If you are playing locally, I wouldn't worry too much about the speed. Just take it little by little and have fun. From what I can tell, the Quake 64 levels have a cap on the jumping so the strafe jumpers from PC cannot go as fast. So if you want to create online lobbies but want it to be slightly slower it may help to select Quake 2 64 levels.

      @@fr0by OK... I just got the game. But I knew something was off.

      *"Always Run - Enable or disable running by default when moving."*
      That setting is missing here. Do you happen to know, is it because such is only available to PC users? Or, is it a mistake/bug?

Sure the q2 rail was harder to land shots with, but the starting weapon blaster was also much worse than machinegun from q3, plus you q2 didnt have gauntlet, witch made spawning even worse.

    183 ping?!!?! There were several points during this video where you would have been invisible to your opponent when their client registered your shot hitting (ie around a corner, behind a box, in the water, etc). While it may have been a good experience for you, it was very likely a *terrible* experience for others, especially given your 180+ ping. This is the same problem that plagues these "unlagged" netcode models to this day, QC being a good example. I wish that there was no lag compensation whatsoever, and all hit registration was done server-side. Obviously this would mean the higher your ping, the more you had to lead your shots--but at least it would also mean when you got hit, you got hit when and where you actually got hit--and you weren't safely around a corner on your client, but you got hit anyway because the server rolled you back in time because some high-ping guy hit you on his client 200-300ms ago. While there are certainly "unlagged" mods for Q3, vQ3 and QL still had the same type of server-side hit detection netcode as OG Q2, so you had to lead your shots more and more at higher pings. It seems like this time of completely server-side hit detection is dead, though, and I should just get used to it :D

    • @fr0by
      @fr0by  Год назад +2

      I definitely see what you are talking about but for the most part its better for getting smaller player bases playing together. Same with Quake Champions, we all wish it had 200,000 players all the time but its just not the case. Having the netcode work this way helps people with 120 ping play comfortably. Of course its not favorable, lower ping is always best!

    There will be a new quake. Q3/live will probably be renastered in 24 and in 25 will be a new quake. Just a guess but I'm willing to bet on it though Bethesda and id seem to do everything in their power to ruin quake champions

    Compare to old q2 multi the new one is much easier, maybe its good cause when new player want to play in q2 multi they can even get a frag when playing with old q2 players who play the Game for 23 yrs😂😂😂

    If you don't have to lead shots at 183 ping, it means the server doesn't validate what client sends, and this game will be completely ruined by hackers within a week.

    ITS SO AWESOME THAT NO ONE IS PLAYING IT. IT'S LITERALLY DEAD. THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE PLAYING ORINGAL QUAKE 2 ON A DAILY BASIS THEN TOTAL PEOPLE THAT PLAYED THE "REMASTER"

    sry to say that but this really looks laggy/sluggish to me, I would have guessed 150ms instead of the ~100 you say. Especially the slower projectiles look like they come from behind or the side (Hyperblaster scenes). Also my sense for hits with the rail gun is pretty off when I watch the video. It often looks to me like you didn't hit when you hit. I dunno how bad this was with the old netcode - I only played games in LAN at this time. But I've played some Quake Live recently and that one seems to handle 100ms pings better than this - although I admit this is very subjective. I tried crossplay of the new Quake 2 with PS5/Switch and PC and could not get to work this in LAN mode. Only the "ONLINE" mode worked for me between PS5 and PC because apparently it needs a paid subscription which I didn't have for the Switch (nintendo subscription in order to access the online feature). But although PS5 and PC were in the same LAN it was VERY skippy and almost not playable from over here (Germany, 500/100mbit fibre connection). They really need to work on those Online services or allow peer-to-peer play via IP between devices and dedicated servers with crossplay support and non-subscription model to make me happy and fullfill a modern standard. I wonder why this is not discussed more through the media which is pure hype atm.

      It was a smash hit in its time and pioneered so much that we take for granted in gaming today.
