I think it’s fair to say that the id games re-releases have turned a complete 180 since the launch of the first original two Doom games. Not only are those *significantly* better with more options to keep the games the same or to enhance them, (As well as no online BS required for what’s downloaded and the base games anymore thank God) but they all come with extra content too. Doom and Doom II have officially supported mods by independent creators, Doom 64 has extra levels to tie the canon of the original classic games with Doom 2016, and Quake not only has a new expansion as well, but support for more user made mods in the future as well, including online and co-op multiplayer for pretty much everything, and not just death matches and tiny character color customizations. They even give you the option to play Quake like you could on the N64, they really didn’t have to do that! And all of this and more is at launch for $10. *TEN DOLLARS.* And assuming that it goes on sale occasionally like all the other Doom games before 2016 do, especially since Doom 3 is also $10, it can get to half off for $5 if we’re lucky. I don’t think that’s gonna happen until like a year or two after this is released, but still, either way it’s an *insanely* good deal! Even at $10, what you need to pay for is pretty much nothing considering all of the improvements and extras you get, *especially* for console players though on systems like the Switch. Quake and the original Doom games now are like a godsend. This is the type of quality and price that most other remasters *should* be! (Not to be confused with full on remakes by the way, those should follow the principles of the Crash and Spyro trilogies instead) And I like how it was basically just shadow dropped too, as if nothing special is there, even though it absolutely is. Obviously it’s not 100% perfect, but for launch, it’s damn near close to it. Adding in optional stuff like improved models and aliasing just to name a few didn’t even need to be there, but nope, they went all in, and that’s why I love it so much. Really my only genuine complaint now is that you need to pay for stuff like NSO just to play the online modes, but that’s not Quake’s fault at all, and the fact that (At least at the moment) you can’t seem to turn on and off the CRT effect for Quake and Quake 64 respectively, but that’s more of a nitpick. Other than that though, it’s pretty much flawless. There’s even cross-platform with other console and PC players, so that’s not an issue either. Having mod support would be nice since there isn’t any mods yet besides Quake 64, but I’m sure that will change pretty soon. So yeah, there’s no doubt in my mind that *this* is what the definitive standard of remakes should be. Stuff like Super Mario 3D All-Stars doesn’t even come *close.* (Although to be fair, that’s to be expected since Nintendo has always done some shitty stuff ever since they first rose to prominence. And yet people defend them as white knights for some reason, despite being a multi billion dollar company like Disney? Whatever man, I don’t fucking care…) I just wish more remakes in general would actually rise up to the occasion such as this. Don’t get me wrong, as much as I love games like RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Jedi Academy, those games are jus re-releases, not remakes. Great to have since they’re on modern consoles, but still not remakes. *This* though, is a remake, 100%. I don’t care what people try to say in regards to sucking other largely incompetent companies dicks such as Nintendo, we should always get better things than what we would expect, and not the same to expectations or less, *fight me.*
I remember my dad trying to download Quake through AOL (took forever) only to realize his computer couldn’t run it lol. Believe it took weeks to try and get this running.
My only grip with this campain was that MachaineGames basically went "You know what? Fuck all of those unique enemies and weapons that were introduced in Scourge of Armagon & Dissolution of Eternity. The only weapons and enemies that were gonna use are the ones found in the base game and that's it." When you look at all of the new environments that the team made it makes you wonder why they couldn't bother to atleast make a new boss.
The trick to playing Quake on Nightmare is just to be aware of the numbers involved, picking up a medical crate that gives you 25 health makes _zero_ sense when you only lost 5 health in the last encounter. The same goes for ammunition, some boxes only give 20 shells while others give 40, maybe avoid the 40's if you only need 10 to max out. This is especially true with energy cell ammo, some enemies drop cells that you can pick up despite being maxed out on cells which should be avoided at all costs.
Wow, when I played Realm of the Cultists I didn't understand that the second part was the first part, but inverted! Good catch! Also, I played Realm of the Cultists and Realm of the Astrologers first, and it made for a pretty impressive start. My only gripe was that finding the lightning bolt gun often marked the impending end of the level. Otherwise, your observations are spot on, even though I perceived the difficult a lot more amicably than you did.
I am surprised that you didn't say much about the atmosphere at the depths of the 2nd level of the realm of the astrologers. I must say that it has been the most memorable moment for me since it is like you descend to the very bottom most anti-pinnacle of reality, a single floor of stone is suspending you and the rune above the void at the bottom of creation. Very cool atmosphere imho
The bigger the fuzz, the bigger the lightning. That's how King Kong uses lightning powers. He's a giant shag carpet. Realm of the Blacksmiths looks like something straight out of Dark Souls.
I loved this new mission pack, and personally I thought it looked great graphicly when you play it after playing the original campaign, as the original is very brown.
In the last bit of Realm of the Blacksmiths, I saved a red armour for the last room and there was a 100 health plus full nails and quad damage so even on nightmare it was easy to just walk in and massacre everything. Also, Realm of the Stonemasons has the best music at least 😉 and btw I led the shambler into the crushing block (nice trick to save ammo).
The new campaign is excellent, if a sequel to Quake is in development I want it to be in that format, a map where you choose each dimension and get the runes. I feel that the new port is lacking more support for the modding community. And show some epic map packs like Arcane Dimensions to new players

@@TerrorLTZ I mean, an actual crossover campaign between Wolf, Doom, Quake, and maybe Heretic/Hexen (Galena is totally a reference to them) would be amazing. Even if it's just the few, they could each play like they do in their respective series.
Personally, having played through this myself, Realm of the Astrologers. The out-of-left-field space kidnapping and prison break was just gob-smacking environmental story telling with the engine and aesthetics of Quake of all games.
Holy shit that Chthon encounter actually mended a childhood sadness I had. I remember learning about the all weapons (impulse 9 in console) cheat. It was too late for me to even start up the game. School ended the next day and I remember RUNNING towards my PC. I loaded up the map, typed in the cheat, pulled out the thunderbolt and.... well, you can imagine my disappointment.
yes omg that crusher section in realm of the stonemasons pt2 had me absolutely livid, an i remember getting past it the first time only for there to be shamblers there... that shit nearly broke me hahaha
So, here's a fun fact: The second map of Stonemasons is made by a dude whose first name is literally *"Jerk"* Dude really lived up to his name for this map.
As Icarus didn't include that little message regarding the second Stonemasons level, I thought that I may take the liberty to do so here: "Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word hate was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. Hate." Take care.
I just finished the Blacksmith Realm, and I noticed all the Quake II reused textures and sound effects, making me believe that this area at least used to be owned by the Strogg. I know we had Strogg boxes in the original game that didn't mean much, but I'm starting to think that the devs are trying to connect the story in some way. They mighta originally wanted them to be two separate continuities, but times are changing, and the Quake series might start to connect more, with Shrug-Niggurath's forces vs. the Strogg!
Plays vid for a minute and a half: "Is he already playing this new port? This just looks like the same old to me. Where is the footage of this alleged remaster?!?!" **Realises RUclips had the vid in 480p for whatever reason and switches it up** "Ah!"
What i get they did on the realm of the stonemasons is the captain crunch of "ooooOOOOPS Its All Shamblers" it should renamed into "Shambling Realm of stonemasons" its probably me but i feel the aim a bit funny... again its probably me.
I think the only thing that works against modern maps in Quake is the enemy roster. The "toughest" enemies are just bullet sponges with hitscans and obnoxious pathfinding bombs. Doom 2's enemies allow sooooo much more depth of design that make the game timeless while Quake kinda has to lean REAL hard on the 3d space design
They didn’t even have to make new enemies. There were so many that they could’ve drawn from in scourge of Armagon and especially dissolution of eternity. They just threw it all away for that same old enemy roster, over and over again. I enjoyed this mission pack but I was hungry for some new enemy types.
I haven't played Quake since the late 90s, mainly since idk where our copy went. And honestly, the look of the game wasn't my favorite either. Idk, I just don't care for the more Lovecraftian look. But this remaster really makes me want to try it out again. The new episode looks really cool too. Those maps in the Blacksmith and Cultist areas look really awesome. Nothing like the original maps I remember. Gonna have to pick this up! I was leaning toward doing that, but seeing the new maps in this vid has helped big time.
@@igorthelight Yeah by the second time through I was practically a zen master. Helped that it was co-op so I was cracking up at my friend having to experience that madness.
Played the new expansion all the way through in co-op and loved it. Haven't had a chance to solo it yet though, but either way... ...I decided to record a little soundtrack mod for it, just for the fun of it. The Reznor tracks are already great, so I have the freedom to do all sorts of weird noise and voice [shambler] and experimentalize the [fiend] out of it :D You know, stonemasons world actually reminded me of a dream I had years and years ago about a massive, nightmarish bathroom, which had some kind of deep well in the middle. I have to like the aesthetic just for somehow accidentally managing to capture that of all things...
Maybe porting some of the new bosses from Arcane Dimensions, like the giant Knight from the map Tears of the False God, or the Scragmother. That one would be quite fitting in either Realm of the Cultists or Astrologers. And the stone Eidolon from the map Leptis Magna would be great for Realm of the Stonemasons.
'Realm of the Stonemasons' is an absolute ball-kicker, utterly merciless. And it's the first chapter I played, too - not the best first impression. Kept having to put it down and walk away for a while, especially playing it on Hard and refusing to leave without fully cleaning house in terms of kills and secrets. Thankfully, the rest of 'Dimension of the Machine' is first-class. But yes, 'Stonemasons' is a remorseless, relentless hell-trudge.
You know what is cool about this new sourceport? I tested some mods, and atleast map mods that doesn't rely on sourceport quirks works perfectly (Dwell and mapjamX) but stuff like Malice and Shrak is still kinda rough around the edges, and sadly, stuff like Ravenkeep and Arcane Dimensions kinda works but has gamebreaking bugs...
2:55 Is that little bit of shameless self-promotion on the part of Mr. Reznor true to the original? I've never actually played Quake, so I don't know. But to have the Nine Inch Nails insignia on the box of nails is rather humorous.
The first level in Realm of the Stonemasons was fine, I actually quite enjoyed that one but the second one is an exercise in tedium that can die in a hole.
@juanjoyaborja.3054 Should I replay Dimension of the Machine (which I've been itching to ngl) I am probably just gonna skip Realm of the Stonemasons altogether

Heretic 2 is soooo underrated and has been in limbo for too long. It needs to be officially available.
@@hairy_cornflake back then heretic 2 was one the prettiest games on quake 2 engine and visuals and controls in that game still holds up today.you are right its very underrated but with the nightdives help it can get more attention than before.
@@hairy_cornflake And even the Amiga had a pretty good version of the game.
Not sure if this is well known but they actually added back in a cut section FROM THE MAIN GAME.
E2M6 - Dismal Oubliette - Had an intro section that was cut completely in the full release, something about having a strict file size limit for the maps or something like that. It's been restored in full, it's a pretty nifty little add in that's a nice surprise!
Where exactly does this appear?
Nightdive and Machine Games are boomer shooter necromancers. Also, your point about Shamblers using their fur to generate static electricity is literally the greatest piece of evidence that they are, in fact, giant furry cinnamon buns.
Nightdive absolutely knocked it out of the park on the new edition. Those guys are next level.
9:43 "... did not go particularly well"
said Icarus while launching a quad damage rocket into a close group of spawn 🤣
Spawns are a beginner's trap.
Wow. I've never looked at quake and thought it was pretty. Some talent on this
pro tip: save thunderbolt and nailgun ammo to deal with the shamblers
Very nice to see Quake maps which aren't just... More Lovecraftian bricks.
I look forward to the suffering, someday!
I love Quake so much. Long live, legend!
Astonishingly high quality expansion. The upside-down cathedral blew my mind.
damn I've been watching Icarus' videos for some time and this is one of those times where you can HEAR his smile while he's talking. This remaster is that much of a banger, and yes, it is and so much more
I think it’s fair to say that the id games re-releases have turned a complete 180 since the launch of the first original two Doom games.
I don’t care what people try to say in regards to sucking other largely incompetent companies dicks such as Nintendo, we should always get better things than what we would expect, and not the same to expectations or less, *fight me.*
i stare at Quake gameplay and just smile. such a beautiful game, so tightly packed with consideration.
Reminded me of "Blood" in how I had to play it on Hard mode with all the pausing, saving and loading I had to resort too.
Great fun though.👍
This is an amazing remaster, honestly 10/10
I remember my dad trying to download Quake through AOL (took forever) only to realize his computer couldn’t run it lol. Believe it took weeks to try and get this running.
My only grip with this campain was that MachaineGames basically went "You know what? Fuck all of those unique enemies and weapons that were introduced in Scourge of Armagon & Dissolution of Eternity. The only weapons and enemies that were gonna use are the ones found in the base game and that's it."
When you look at all of the new environments that the team made it makes you wonder why they couldn't bother to atleast make a new boss.
I think this is a beautiful celebration of Quake and it's amazing legacy in the gaming landscape. Machine Games did an amazing job here!
Damn, just look at this sweet level design! I'm not even a big Quake 1 fan, and I want to play it.
This was one of the very first games I ever played, and now it looks... beautiful!
I expected one of Civvie's 'Bullshit' as a sound sample. :D
Chuhthon...kthon? Katan? No...
Still waiting for the GOG release.
It’s amazing how good the Quake engine can look
I was on the verge of subscribing, that part about the fluffy shambler won me over for good.
Now we need an Unreal remaster
The new campaign is excellent, if a sequel to Quake is in development I want it to be in that format, a map where you choose each dimension and get the runes.
I feel that the new port is lacking more support for the modding community. And show some epic map packs like Arcane Dimensions to new players
I would kill for Quake 5, especially if it's a sequel to Quake 1.
2 and 3 got sequels, why not 1?
@@DarkLink1996. Quake: revenge of the hardtoname boss that got telefraged
if they made Q5 as a sequel to Q1 i hope they keep that "dark muddy medieval tone" it has but with the balance of Futuristic areas.
@@TerrorLTZ a direct sequel to Q1 and Champions, where you can choose any character to go through the campaign (for more replayability). they already have enough assets created (some lore, textures, weapons, chars) only they need make the maps and enemies.
@@RoosTerJunkyard Quake champions is a sequel to Q3
the same with Q4 is almost a sequel to Q2 Cuz Strogg
tbh making a campaing with multiple characters will not add to replayabilty since its just the same but a different player model. if actually different will take more time and more easy to fuck up any plot.
@@TerrorLTZ
I mean, an actual crossover campaign between Wolf, Doom, Quake, and maybe Heretic/Hexen (Galena is totally a reference to them) would be amazing.
This has a good Halloween feel to it.
"Mackanist?"
This some strange British way of saying "machinist?"
I've never heard a machine called a mackin.
From 4:26 to 4:35 - X) (Oh, what the hell? It's funny but at the same time it's amazing!) XD
So, here's a fun fact:
The second map of Stonemasons is made by a dude whose first name is literally *"Jerk"*
Dude really lived up to his name for this map.
I wonder if DOTM's architecture is a proof of concept for how a modern Quake could look.
4:30 Hey it's that one room from Doom Eternal where you punch the things and the cages lift up. Cool throwback for the quake players lol
Realm of the machinist and realm of the Blacksmiths remind me a little bit of Prince of Persia, warrior within, in the section of the mechanical tower
Love this new episode. It's really hard, but man is it fun.
I had a lot of fun making the enemies fight each other
As Icarus didn't include that little message regarding the second Stonemasons level, I thought that I may take the liberty to do so here:
"Hate. For you. Hate. Hate."
Take care.
Oh, yes!!
They mighta originally wanted them to be two separate continuities, but times are changing, and the Quake series might start to connect more, with Shrug-Niggurath's forces vs. the Strogg!
Playing these on nightmare with the new 50% health reduction is hell.
This and arcane dimensions are some of the best graphical stuff...
Plays vid for a minute and a half: "Is he already playing this new port? This just looks like the same old to me. Where is the footage of this alleged remaster?!?!"
**Realises RUclips had the vid in 480p for whatever reason and switches it up**
"Ah!"
What i get they did on the realm of the stonemasons is the captain crunch of "ooooOOOOPS Its All Shamblers" it should renamed into "Shambling Realm of stonemasons"
its probably me but i feel the aim a bit funny... again its probably me.
For whatever reason, the crosshair isn't centered.
The aiming is off. I have the Xbox version.
@@JARRYDTHEPAIN so probably its the MS store version then.
Yeah this new expansions just show how quake 1screams for new enemies.
They could have used some of the plenty made by the community.
They didn’t even have to make new enemies. There were so many that they could’ve drawn from in scourge of Armagon and especially dissolution of eternity. They just threw it all away for that same old enemy roster, over and over again. I enjoyed this mission pack but I was hungry for some new enemy types.
Someone at Machine Games must have heard me say that DOPA was a touch too easy, and made this as an act of vengeance. Cool stuff, please make more.
DOPA was a throwback to vanilla Quake, as much in design as in difficulty. This is more in line with modern custom maps.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one who almost had a rage aneurysm trying to get through the stone mason deathtrap gauntlet...
It's a good rage control training ;-)
@@igorthelight Yeah by the second time through I was practically a zen master. Helped that it was co-op so I was cracking up at my friend having to experience that madness.
This episode is a masterpiece pushing the Quake 1 engine to the limits !!!
It's KEX engine, not idtech. I suppose an old idtech wouldn't render scenes from DotM
I need a quake sequel in this style.
It's good to be a Quake and Doom fan, indeed.
There are people who think Shamblers don't have fur? They're like yetis. Yetis who throw lightning.
i really like the new episode, its like AD but with only vanilla monsters.
Only one word : Beautiful
Back in there on nightmare Icarus! Unacceptable!
I did play the realm of the stonemasons first by accident. Not fun running out of ammo there.
A very good and honest summary
Great work as usual - cracking review.
pro tip 2: use the crushers to deal with the enemies in the 13:00 section
When you get an unskippable ad that's 1hr 30min. 🤦🏼♂️.
18:00 Holy shit I never realized that!
Played the new expansion all the way through in co-op and loved it.
Haven't had a chance to solo it yet though, but either way...
...I decided to record a little soundtrack mod for it, just for the fun of it. The Reznor tracks are already great, so I have the freedom to do all sorts of weird noise and voice [shambler] and experimentalize the [fiend] out of it :D
You know, stonemasons world actually reminded me of a dream I had years and years ago about a massive, nightmarish bathroom, which had some kind of deep well in the middle. I have to like the aesthetic just for somehow accidentally managing to capture that of all things...
You have a link to that soundtrack of yours?
@@mugwump7049 It's going to be another week and a bit before it's finished, and then I will ;)
@@SplotchTheCatThing Cool! Thanks.
THIS IS MY MACHINEEEEEE
I'll say what everyone is thinking, they should have added a boss in each map. I'm sure modders can help with that.
@@wallyhackenslacker Eidolon is from Heretic/Hexen. They don't have the rights to use him in a commercial game.
Nice job man! Great video!
20:11 Anyone else reminded of _Guardians of the Galaxy_ ?
I wish Machine Games would just develop a full on brand new Quake game already.
There are... Rumors but I'm guessing the Indiana Jones project is taking priority.
@@dourweb Indiana Jones? Just let that franchise die already.
Ew after seeing what Wolfenstein has become, i hope not
You know what is cool about this new sourceport? I tested some mods, and atleast map mods that doesn't rely on sourceport quirks works perfectly (Dwell and mapjamX) but stuff like Malice and Shrak is still kinda rough around the edges, and sadly, stuff like Ravenkeep and Arcane Dimensions kinda works but has gamebreaking bugs...
2:55 Is that little bit of shameless self-promotion on the part of Mr. Reznor true to the original? I've never actually played Quake, so I don't know. But to have the Nine Inch Nails insignia on the box of nails is rather humorous.
Yes it is, quite suprising it's still there
Quake wouldn't be quite the same without Trent. He's the voice of Ranger, too. But I think the NIN logo on the nail ammo was id's idea, not Trent's.
The first level in Realm of the Stonemasons was fine, I actually quite enjoyed that one but the second one is an exercise in tedium that can die in a hole.
I actually restarted my whole run on this campaign because of hell or dark water, and it took me like 45 minutes to finish it when I did return to it
@juanjoyaborja.3054 Should I replay Dimension of the Machine (which I've been itching to ngl) I am probably just gonna skip Realm of the Stonemasons altogether
Best. Added. Level. For. Free. EVER.
Dimension of the past was as good as previous two expansion packs. But Dimension of the machine is something fresh
Not wanting this spoiled, just leaving a thumps bup and coment and moving on.
