    I made my own free skates out of long board wheels and wood. They work very well and I learnt how to ride over around 2 days.
    I did this because I really like free skates but I live in Australia and JMKs are too far and expensive.
    I ordered a different brand of free skates on Amazon (cheap) so I have multiple pairs to ride with my friends (that learnt with my DIY free skates).
    Hope everyone has fun with these awesome rolling things.

      Day 2: I can now push and keep the equilibrium through all of the little slope I found in the park, it scares the shit out of me because by the time I'm getting to the end I have a “lot” of speed and Don’t know how to stop yet so I just jump off and start running haha.
      I also know get the Motion of the pump but I can't use it to propel myself yet.

    • @jonathancastro8487
      @jonathancastro8487 2 месяца назад

      Day 3: I get the motion of the pump, I Don’t give enough push to accelerate myself but I do the motion.
      Day 4: I can now pump, and feel very happy as I can now skate in plain terrain, I Don’t need the slight inclination anymore. I'm now trying to carve but I can't because when I start to go “fast” I jump and run instead of carving haha.

    • @jonathancastro8487
      @jonathancastro8487 2 месяца назад

      Day 5: I got upset as I brought my freeskates to try to use them on a little segment on the way to my faculty but I just couldn't pump at all, so they were useless.
      Later at night I went to the park to keep practicing pumping, and now I got it, I could cruise for a while throughout segments of the park very smoothly and even go uphill (it was a very slight inclination) I was doing a weird pumping but I guess it was more from fatigue than anything, so I'm quitting for a few days until I Don’t feel my legs sore and then see how I perform.

    • @jonathancastro8487
      @jonathancastro8487 Месяц назад

      Day ???: I've been freeskating for like a month and a half now I think, and just today I decided to learn riding switch, it was weird because it was kind of hard but at the same time I didn't feel it a lot in my legs, like when I was starting from zero, and after a couple of hours I can kind of pump riding switch so I am proud of my progress, I really love these things and managing to get to my faculty at uni with these felt like such an accomplishment.

    got mine a few weeks ago, watch a few tutorials, first saw them on the braille channel - tried to do an hour a day, because of bails and muscle soreness, not always possible - being quite an old guy, I would hardly recommend long stretching of the legs after a hard session, and before - I was not able to walk properly for a few days after I got them - landed on my front leg knee a few times, so some protection will be added soon...
    problem with the bails was mostly not concentrating, or just being too bold - it happens so quick, I was not able to bail out before hitting the floor, just bruises so far, but you have to be carefull, all the time
    learned to push regular, now trying switch - it's way harder than it looks, and my left leg, who has to lead now, is totally confused what to do - atm I'm pushing round in backside circles - love the regular frontside pushes, I start to feel the force "comming" back from the wheels, and get the feedback I need to balance properly - and its not longer an act of force or strength, it just "happens" - very nice feeling!
    stay with it, finish the sessions with a sucess, sleep and let the muscle memory do it's thing - yesterday I could not, today I suddenly can - just stay patience and don't overdue it!

    Hey Gabe thanks for the great contact you’ve made this journey much more enjoyable and very appreciated. Just out of curiosity why is the deck at the angle to the wheels instead of being just straight parallel with them?

    • @ReavoEnd
      @ReavoEnd 2 года назад +1

      Because turning the leg in and out is an essential part of freeskating, and because legs can't turn as far in as they can turn out. The angle is a good midpoint from which most people can turn their legs inward just as far as they can turn them outward from it.

My legs, like inner thigh, always feel tired after a few pumps. Yes I can go far in my first attempt but my succeeding attempts get tiring faster. How to deal with it? But what i noticed by watching tutorials is everyone gives a different tutorial for the s motion xD. Yet I watched 3 tutorials. The first one said, do a motion like walking, so forwards and backwards, the next one said do the tilting forwards and backwards and now you come and say do the twisting. is it necessary to change the grip each time you switch wheels or you do it just to match the colors?

    • @GabeAltier
      @GabeAltier  5 лет назад

      A little bit of both! Over time, the grip will start to smooth down and become less grippy. Both the wheels and the grip were pretty worn down, so I bought wheels/grip that would match!

      It really does feel that way! And for learning, you should find a smooth, gradual slope to give you some momentum - that will help with learning to balance.

    • @brandonlunch3979
      @brandonlunch3979 4 года назад +4

      First of all, check your skates. Flip them over and spin a wheel. If it spins less than 5 seconds or so than take out the bearings and give them a good soak and scrub with isopropyl alcohol. After that relube them with wd 40 or some kind of silicone grease. It's nearly impossible to pump with dirty bearing, and unless the bearing are bones red the factory lube is probably pretty bad. If the skates aren't the problem, then I would try the carving motion on a slight downhill. Get a feel for pumping and enhance your balance without having to worry about speed (also a good time to start trying braking methods). Practice turning on the downhills to get used to the motions. After that begin to try on flat ground and inclines and you'll be skating well in no time

    • @GabeAltier
      @GabeAltier  4 года назад +4

      So you’re trying to pump uphill? This just takes time. Personally, it took me about a week of constant practice. It really has almost nothing to do with the bearings, especially if the skates are relatively new. You’ll get it! Let me know if you have any more questions 👍🏼

    eric's skates are not jmk's are they still good?

    • @GabeAltier
      @GabeAltier  5 лет назад +1

      They're good to learn on, yes. But the JMK's are superior in every way. If you don't have the budget yet, I would recommend getting the cheaper ones ($35) and getting the JMK's then you get more serious/have the money 👍🏼

      @@GabeAltier whats a good brand to try, to see if i like em?

    • @GabeAltier
      @GabeAltier  5 лет назад

      To be honest, I would go for the JMK's if you can afford it. For the best skates on the market it's a good deal (discount in the video description). Otherwise, the cheap manufacturers all pretty much sell the same thing. Just be aware that you get what you pay for 👍🏼

    I started off on my new [used] free skates by rolling back and forth on a flat surface with constant handholds for about 15 minutes. for me it was from the kitchen to the front door using the shelves/walls the entire way- this was just to get used to the balance, and a slight intro into turning. Then I took it outside on a slight slope to get the feel of ~no hands~. Progressed little by little the first day until I could make it down the drive (~50 feet) in not too long a time.
    This is a similar strategy as to how I started off with my Ripstik years ago; user @Higanbana彼岸花's wording of "more of a pivot" (in one of the comments on this video) helped a lot on transferring my ripstik skills over to the free skates the first days of learning to balance and pump.
    The "sleep on it" advice proved extremely helpful, however, as I found I somehow progressed overnight, so don't get discouraged on your first attempt/s!
    Today was day 2, and I can now steer, turn, and balance as long as there's a slight slope. Started attempting the propelling but it just wasn't clicking today, guess (hope) it'll be a Day Three thing.
    Thank you for this video - the explanations paired with the visual demonstrations helped a lot, step-by-step. Hope this info is helpful to somebody.
