this may ruffle sum feathers, but have you heard of a lil' game called CONCORD? Seems somewhat up your valley It's a live service game tho, and a one on cryostasis, so, dunno if you're willing to check it out
I imported this game during winter break in 2005. I brought it to a party when all of my friends were home from college. This game wowed my friend group. Another friend brought over a PSP with a Star Wars game and no one cared we spent the night making dumb little songs. This may be one of the most played games I own
My niece LOVES Electroplankton. Whenever she visits, she asks to play the "Fishy game", and spends the next half hour just playing around with all the different modes with a big grin on her face. While this game isn't really a "game", I feel that it definitely has a place in the DS's library, and feel that it would do wonders on modern platforms, especially for kids. It was practically one of those "kid stimming games" before that became a massive industry.
If this comes to new platforms I can only see mobile, Switch, and PC versions. That's because half the game requires the touch-screen, and the PC can do something similar with a mouse. And even then, the Switch version might not exist because some of them need a mic and the Switch has no mic. With that said, you can plug in a mic through the headphone jack, so maybe it'll say "plug in a microphone" or something. But to be honest, this would be a great mobile game
Electroplankton is just pure creativity, I 100% expect someone to make an entire album with this game one day and it will absolutely slap. Edit: I went searching and found that someone named Maximus Lockhart made an album using a different 3DS game *two days ago,* I'm taking that as a good sign.
This comment is definitely responsible for a spike in views on my album, and that has further helped it into the algorithm so thank you. Rytmik Rock Edition is the software I used, it is technically DSi ware, but I was running it on a 3DS XL thus the album title is "Nothing But A 3DS", because you are literally hearing the headphone jack of a 3DS for the whole album.
Games like this don't come around very often, it's such a unique game, Luminaria easily being my favorite of the bunch. I've been playing it whenever I feel stressed out and it does wonders for me :)
“animalcule” was the original name given to microscopic organisms by the scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek before they got their scientific classification. I actually think it’s pretty cute. Little molecule animals - animalcules
Animalcule is one of my favorite words already, but getting to hear Thor, one of my favorite content creators, say it not once but multiple times? Folks, I tell ya, it just doesn’t get any better than this!
While Electroplankton came out, I was attending the Games Academy in Berlin, Germany and shortly before the release, we had an employee of Nintendo Europe over for a talk, and he showed us Electrplankton via debugging box on a projector. Was pretty neat.
there's an ancient youtube video titled "iBand" where the gimmick it was a song performed on multiple first generation iPhones using various music apps. Their very first video also had a DS playing electroplankton as part of the instruments, and I was very disappointed when they replaced the DS with another iPhone in their later performances. Toshio Iwai is such a cool creator. Also a fascinating detail is that SimTunes, before it had the Sim branding, was originally pitched for the SNES as "Sound Fantasy", and would have been one of the few SNES Mouse games developed by Nintendo. So the connection between Iwai and Nintendo existed even before Electroplankton.
I loved this deep dive (no pun intended). I never got to play it at the time but am so glad there’s games out there like this that are just joy distilled down to seemingly simple but polished ideas.
Electroplankton is just one of those games that's pure vibes I had it on my DS when I was younger thanks to the power of flashcards and my dad just downloading every game he could find for the thing it's great seeing it talked about, holds a special place for me
I saw TOshiro Iwai in the 2005 Art Futura exhibition in Barcelona. Asides from this game, he also created a music gadget called Tenori-O or sometrhing like that.
18:04 Not sure if the dsi release has extra extra ones, but most of the modes including the mario drum machine one have variations you can access in the original game by pressing the minus button. There's kid icarus and balloon fight variations instead of mario that might sound more or less silly to ppl lol lovely video btw this is one of my fav games thanks thor :]
I found myself really getting invested in that Pikachu image at 6:45. Like how did the Pika end up in such a horrifying place while looking for McDonalds. Was it on an odyssey to cross from a world where there are no McDonalds's into a world with them? Did the Pika die from how toxic McDonalds is? Is this a sentient cartridge of Hey You Pikachu that is playing mind games with a 5 year old? I am way too invested in this picture that probably took 2 minutes to make.
I just played this game for the first time. I am amazed that my favourite youtuber makes an essay about it. Let's say I enjoyed the voice mix sampler A LOT.
18:49 the Guinness book of world record 2008 does say that it's the first game to allow the player to compose. I guess mario paint was an snes... utility?
Guinness is literally just a marketing company, you have to pay them to get in their records lol. So them saying this holds pretty much no weight at all.
love the vid and LOOOVED the patrone track. so happy you zero'd in on a game thats always fun. And eapecially this game like, totally forgot about this super ds moment.
love the game, hated the smash stage lol update: this is genuinely a calming video without your narration being boring. i put it on to listen to while i was in another tab but ended up paying way more attention to this than what i was originally gonna work on. thank you youtube recs for this gem!
If you are exploring this game: -If you press select on Lumiloops, Marinesnow and Beatnes, it'll actually change the music/instruments that play. -Pressing select on Hanenbow changes the layout -Pressing the d-pad on Luminaria will shift the arrows around with a wave. -Pressing up and down on the d-pad on Rec-Rec changes the backing track I was lucky enough to play this as a kid because my game shop got a single used copy and I spent soooo much time on it
This is one of those deep cuts that would hit perfect when you were just in the mood to vibe and create. I only ever really screwed around with a copy a friend had but I felt it was a cool as hell "art piece" for a lack of a better description.
Awesome video I really just like the aesthetic of this game and how it feels. Like many others probably I first found out about it through smash bros and thought it was very interesting especially for them to put it in smash
I didn't see this video at all until now but now I kinda hope you'll talk about the DS and that Korg software synth thing. Years ago I had a DS in my toy-synth suitcase for just that reason. It's seen some use in small living room performances as you can just have people interact with it, when using the XY chaos mode.
damn that Time Hollow soundtrack at 0:55 brings back memories not sure if you played that one yet, but might be interesting since it's a VN I never really heard anyone talk about ^^
I remember briefly playing Electroplankton at a games museum type place once and loving it, maybe someday I'll try and track down my own copy (sidenote; I wonder if Toshio Iwai has ever collaborated with Yann Tomita, it seems like their interests overlap)
THOR THOR THOR THOR THOR! scrunchy ds compression was a great gift. i believe it was the main reason that accordion synths dominated nintendo sound around 2005-2008
While Electroplankton came out, I was attending the Games Academy in Berlin, Germany and shortly before the release, we had an employee of Nintendo Europe over for a talk, and he showed us Electrplankton via debugging box on a projector. Was pretty neat.
