This game, Kane & Lynch 2, and Hotline Miami I consider part of an unofficial trilogy of grimy videotape-aesthetic murder simulators. PS2-era Rockstar had such fantastic eerie urban atmosphere, and Manhunt was one of the best. After you kill everybody in a level, just walk through it and soak in the vibes. It has the feeling of walking home late at night through neighborhoods you don't spend much time in.
Good analogy of the vibe. Also on a side note, Kane & Lynch 2 definitely was not worth the full price but it doesn't get enough credit how well it pulls off the aesthetic. At some points the game looked if not photo realistic than at least handycam realistic, I wouldn't mind a sequel if they pulled it off right.
@@shawklan27 Gee dude, you must be pretty twisted. I dunno, Lynch's blackout freakout disorder is pretty funny to me because of how over the top and cliché it is but the game itself is uniquely grim and depressing. Both games basically have you go through hell just to give you no real resolve.

That soliloquy about impotent societal rage hit really close to home, man. The last few days have been dangerously angry for me. It scares me. I feel myself being just one step from doing something I'd regret forever after a lifetime of trying to play nice. It would solve nothing and make even more problems, but sometimes I don't care. It makes one feel possessed.
It is very comforting to hear you talk about your struggles with the housing market since I too have been struggling with rent raises and getting landlords to just do their fucking job. Of course, I'd prefer if you weren't struggling with this at all since I wouldn't want anyone to go through this horrible system but it is comforting to know I'm not struggling by myself. Also, in a similar fashion, I think me feeling as if the pressure of societal pains have stacked upon me to much has also made me turn to consuming violent media more as well though I've been playing No More Heroes and Hotline Miami while watching Miike movies but all in a similar vein to a degree I'd like to think. Anyway, to finish this dumb little comment, I'd just like to say I hope everything gets to a better point for you and thank you for continuing to make videos during this time.

Always best to educate yourself about your jurisdiction's landlord and tenant regulations before lying to one's landlord, but yes, it is always advisable to strategically lie whenever and wherever you have the law on your side. For instance, where I live, No Pets clauses in leases are unenforceable, meaning even if you sign a normal lease with a landlord saying you agree to not own pets while living in the unit, there's not a damn fuck they can do about it if you move in with a pet, unless someone with a documented and serious allergy to your pet lives in the building and shares ventilation with your unit (and even then it would be on the tenant to complain, the landlord can't do anything independently). Of course, that doesn't stop every second lease agreement here from having No Pets clauses, but because of that, it is pretty much not within any prospective tenant's best interest to be honest about whether they have pets or not. I'm in a tenant rights group for my jurisdiction on Facebook and pretty much any chance I get I tell someone who is struggling to find an apartment and is frustrated about all the No Pets clauses to just ignore it and lie. It's honestly on all the asshole landlords putting in No Pets clauses because they think having a cat in their shitty condo unit with flooring made of cardboard and painted with powdered eggshells mixed with water is going to have a significant effect on the value of the unit in the future.

Somewhere along the way of you describing the satirical elements of the original design as a deconstruction of video game violence I was reminded of A Serbian Film, which is similarly a satirical genre parody that was dismissed as being gross for the sake of being edgy (or being some kind of crime against humanity / fetish pornography) by people with no reference point for what it was actually about (A Serbian Film was born out of the director's frustration with independent Eastern European cinema, where it seemed to be the case that filmmakers and critics were increasingly fetishising human misery and using it as a lazy way to come across as 'artistic'. Not only that, but there's a very clear parallel between the pornography being made and pro-military nationalist propaganda of the kind that had recently been distributed to Serbian nationalists during the years of violent civil war between the various ethnic groups that were distributed across the former Yugoslavian nation. It's not exactly subtle when they have the main character introduced wearing an old military jacket and having him pulled in to do "one more job", Rambo style. The point is that the militants from all sides of that conflict did all the stuff he does in the film and that it's a bit fucked up that they're national heroes. It even makes a very clear point about the issues being raised being systemic and not due to the actions of one sick individual - when both the protagonist and Vukmir are deceased another man steps in and takes over. It's not the greatest piece of cinema out there, but it's earnestly trying to say something about the media and how it frames horrible acts of violence as demonstrations of strength and encourages the public to regard a bunch of sadistic rapists and murderers as national heroes, even as their own children suffer through the devastating effects of those conflicts.). The two texts have a lot in common and it's not lost on me that their biggest detractors didn't actually bother to experience them and instead relied on inaccurate information that misrepresented the content, nor did they have any knowledge of the culture that they came from in order to understand the context for what they were intending to say.
>militants from all sides of that conflict did all the stuff he does in the film AlL sIDeS, you know, when it was Serbs and Croats on the trial for gеnосіdе of Bosnians, some people STILL pretend it's too complicated and BOTHSIDE the fact of Serbia and Croatia deciding to get rid of nations they deemed inferior (i.e. Muslims - Albanians and Bosniaks). Notice that it's a SERBIAN film, not AllSidesAreBad film. Milosevic, Karajdjic, Mladic... they were all on one side. Now I don't want to feel Ustase wannabes from Croatia left out so look up what convictions made Praljak become viral. tl;dr: you can't seriously bothside concentration camps. Guys behind the bars are victims, get out of here with "they did bad stuff too" rhethoric. Sincerely, a Ukrainian who jumps up on hearing any bothsidism where almost every war has clear aggressor and victims.
@11:27 - I think the german part is a mistranslation, and I also think I can explain. Germany, at least back in the day, had a problem with games that rewarded killing. Many games were indexed (meaning a very strict 18+ rating). Manhunt DOES reward you for killing and killing more gruesomely with the Style Points System. That in combination with really gruesome level of violence, especially for when it was release, most likely contributed to it being on of the very few games to earn the label of "nationwide confiscated" in Germany. In the 90s it was even a problem if enemies were humans or "human-like", that's why we got all the versions with robots as enemies and crap like that. Having humans as enemies was enough reason to get a game indexed. Nowadays our ratings board is FAR more relaxed. It's a rarity anything is getting censored/denied an age rating at all, usually everything is just getting waved through. Really the only two most recent examples eem to be Dead Island 2 and Dying LIght 2, both had to ge censored slightly and it really felt like the ratings board had a bad day, because it makes no sense considering what other games have gotten releases over here uncensored.
@29:05 - this is also, at least for Germany, completely false. A game doesn't get denied a rating over here because of the predecessor. That is simply legally not possible. The game itself, in it's release version, got looked at by people. They probably checked the US version because I doubt Rockstar would have even attempted to get a rating for it, but it did not get denied it's rating because "Oh part 1 was really edgy and violent."
I can not believe I wasn't notified to my favorite youtube person's newest video. RUclips headquarters shall he hearing from my lawyer task force very soon.
As someone who worked at a big retailer at the time, I always found it hilariously hypocritical when there was controversy about a game that caused us to pull them from the lock cases and keep them behind the counter because won't somebody please think about the children, meanwhile on our DVD rack we had copies of Scarface sitting right next to The Little Mermaid.
On the topic of struggles and frustrations leading to violent art, "El Paso, Elsewhere" is a game I would strongly recommend. Not just for the gameplay, but for the OST as well.
Your videos are the reason I ended up owning a ps2 again and now I’ll probably add Manhunt to that list too. You have such a way with words describing the purposely grimy art design of this era of ps2 games and it’s that uniqueness in your writing that makes you one of my favorite channels on this site. Also hope that stuff with your apartment turns out good for you, I’m going through a similar phase and it feels nice to be seen, much love! ❤
Manhunt 1 has some great atmosphere with the locations you visit. All the locations have the urban decay feel where the places used to be lived in but now are nothing but a battlefield
felt the kinda thesis of this one very heavily. scuzzy media does feel super cathartic to engage with sometimes, especially when you feel an agency you may not have in your day to day life. it's nice to hear that articulated really well lol
Just like the video shop hid this games rental from me, youtube failed to tell me about this video for 4 weeks. Luckily my need for a thorhighheels rewatch binge is never far off.
It's kinda crazy how popular manhunt was in estonia. Like every boy in first grade knew the game and we would constantly talk about the executions during gym class.
Hey brother, thanks for another great video. I am always excited to see a new video from you. Your work is a great vibe. Feels like hanging out with one of my friends while he tells me about a new game he is into. Sorry to hear about your apartment troubles. If I could contribute on patreon, I would. You absolutely deserve it.
I think a lot of us are going through the same tribulations right now. Hope your living/housing situation turns out well, as well as anybody else reading this 🖤
Never played Manhunt or any of Rockstars big name titles really, so hearing someone wax lyrical about it doens't really do much for me... but the sincere retelling of your woes make me hope for a better tomorrow for you free of asshole landlords, and you DID show that old grainy Postal-game, the very first one, which I played an old demo of way back when I was a mere kid and felt it really didn't live up to the gruesome promises it's PR campaign gave... though it did inspire a story I had to write for my schools eassay-project. It got predictably rejected because stories about setting fire to marching bands wasn't really the vibe my school was going for, so I'll always remember it for that.
bro it's a damn shame you are struggling with your living situation, you're prob the best vidya essay channel on the platform. I probably disagree with you about a few things unrelated to video games. your videos are just so damn good. I subbed to the top level of your patreon, and that's not to think in any way that your discussion of your life was even adjacent to e-begging, so plz don't think that, not sure if you would think that but I feel like you are an anxious bean and god knows I am an anxious bean so I'm just saying that to be safe* about it do you ever sell shirts? your graphic design is hella good and I want to buy something with text that you align to an invisible grid with various 90s/00s-flavored jests and japes *(I have crippling OCD)
Hang in there, comrade. Housing fucking sucks but you have to keep hoping for the right thing to come along. It took several years to find a wheelchair accessible apartment that would let me keep my dog, but it paid off in the end. Also fucking adore these games. I remember the ‘Manhunt killing’ at the time it unfolded, it was wild.

Me and a coworker were just talking about this game not even an hour ago, then I go to check my phone and see this notification pop up, absolutely amazing timing
This does make me wonder what you'd think of Red Dead Revolver. I've never played the Red Dead Redemption games, but I tried Revolver out recently and was pleasantly surprised by it! It's basically the same charm other Rockstar games have from this time, just with more nature themed areas than city ones.
First video I've seen of yours. You give off major Grim Beard vibes; another one of my favorite RUclipsrs as well, so glad I found you. Out of all the retrospectives I've watched of the Manhunt games, including Grim Beard's, I've never seen anyone with a perspective on it like yours. The idea that these games can serve as a safe way to quell impetuous societal rage is something I never thought about. I think that's a pretty good way to look at it as well. Hope your housing situation gets better, dude.
Rockstar always seemed to just be under the microscope for news outlets for the longest time it seemed, I guess media just hated that they continued to do as they pleased with games that pushed the envelope I'll never forget the massive hot coffee controversy, because it's like.. it's not even in the game, technically! You had to go out of your way to get a mod to restore the functionality of this cut in development and half removed feature. But the mere existance of sex minigame, man it caused such a ridiculous moreal uproar.
Bro I wish you all the best. Hope it goes all smoothly finding a new home :D But when KingCobra does it you can too haha ^^ btw didn't you say you gonna make a video about rain in videogames on X? I remember seeing the manhunt rain gif/video on X. But maybe I just misremembering it^^
One of the fun things about Manhunt was using the PS2 mic to alert or distract enemies. Also man, Postal 1 was such an unnerving, creepy game it's very jarring to revisit especially when you're used to the ironic edgy satire and humorous tone of Postal 2 and 4.
Postal still plays great and Redux is pretty good. Solid twin stick shooter with atmosphere that painstakingly recreates average American school. Even if the last two levels in mission pack are Tokyo and Osaka.
GTA V & Online exists, so yeah, those are the only games they seem to care, ok maybe VI as well but i'm cheating since it hasn't come out yet but you get the idea
I still have my copy of Manhunt 2 on the PSP and I agree with you on how good looking the port is, only a couple of weapons were cut to meet Sony's regulations . Recently a very early build of the PSP version was leaked and it featured tons of cut content ranging from weapons , environmental executions and enemy designs .

AlL sIDeS, you know, when it was Serbs and Croats on the trial for gеnосіdе of Bosnians, some people STILL pretend it's too complicated and BOTHSIDE the fact of Serbia and Croatia deciding to get rid of nations they deemed inferior (i.e.
Sorry to hear about your landlord problem, same housing crisis here in the UK sadly…
“Danny, this isn’t just a chase - it’s a MANHUNT TOO!”
Bravo. Incredible stuff Rockstar.
At this point your vids are just a comfort watch. Your voice is very comforting. Keep'em coming...pls
I click the bell and still youtube never notifies me about these gems.... Glad I looked on my timeline.
As a human who is also in a housing bind: I fuckin feel ya brother.
felt the kinda thesis of this one very heavily. scuzzy media does feel super cathartic to engage with sometimes, especially when you feel an agency you may not have in your day to day life. it's nice to hear that articulated really well lol
i have few precious hours to enjoy *things* throughout each day... i set aside a special time for this. thanks Thor.
also that god darn break stuff song killed my driver side door speaker.
Just like the video shop hid this games rental from me, youtube failed to tell me about this video for 4 weeks. Luckily my need for a thorhighheels rewatch binge is never far off.
It's kinda crazy how popular manhunt was in estonia. Like every boy in first grade knew the game and we would constantly talk about the executions during gym class.
you guys rock, so cool brother, i hope some day to visit Estonia!
@@SCHATTENJGGER Kinda fucked up to be honest.
@@gustavvaip1600 low-key yeah 🤣🤘
Hey brother, thanks for another great video. I am always excited to see a new video from you. Your work is a great vibe. Feels like hanging out with one of my friends while he tells me about a new game he is into.
Sorry to hear about your apartment troubles. If I could contribute on patreon, I would. You absolutely deserve it.
absolutely loved the inspection of edgy media and the reasoning why we feel attracted to it, what a good vid !!
I have to say that impression of Leo Kasper was great hahahaha.
Hope your housing problems solve soon Thor! Much love
I think a lot of us are going through the same tribulations right now. Hope your living/housing situation turns out well, as well as anybody else reading this 🖤
Thorhighheels, you've changed my life for the better
Omg, the more I watch, the more I fall in love.❤
Damn landlords ya dont mess wit the willem
OH MY GOD THORHIGHHEELS IS TALKING ABOUT MANHUNT
lmao not the spyro music
bro it's a damn shame you are struggling with your living situation, you're prob the best vidya essay channel on the platform. I probably disagree with you about a few things unrelated to video games. your videos are just so damn good. I subbed to the top level of your patreon, and that's not to think in any way that your discussion of your life was even adjacent to e-begging, so plz don't think that, not sure if you would think that but I feel like you are an anxious bean and god knows I am an anxious bean so I'm just saying that to be safe* about it
do you ever sell shirts? your graphic design is hella good and I want to buy something with text that you align to an invisible grid with various 90s/00s-flavored jests and japes
*(I have crippling OCD)
bruh
this game is so AMAZING!
Glad to see ppl talk about it!
16:35 limp bizkit should make the national anthem
for putinlandia, considering Fred Durst views and wife (if you want another based fact about Ukraine, we are the only country that BANNED LIMP BIZKIT for sucking).
legit your videos are so comfy and i'm so sorry about the housing stuff man. Keep fighting the good fight.
Me and a coworker were just talking about this game not even an hour ago, then I go to check my phone and see this notification pop up, absolutely amazing timing
your phone listens to you.
This does make me wonder what you'd think of Red Dead Revolver. I've never played the Red Dead Redemption games, but I tried Revolver out recently and was pleasantly surprised by it! It's basically the same charm other Rockstar games have from this time, just with more nature themed areas than city ones.
Thor can you do the swat series. I think swat 4 has one the best level designs ever. Lets just say it vibes hard AF
Hope your housing situation gets better, dude.
another great video from the best creator on youtube. I hope you catch a break with the tough shit in life.
I was not expecting this video from you but I'm pleasantly surprised to see it. Thank you 🙏
here’s hoping all the best for your housing hunt Thor! love ya so much! ❤
This perpetual international housing crisis is getting me down. Getting me feeling all radicalized. I guess that's pretty rad.
hmmmm...
thorhighheels : )
Manhunt 1 was a survival horror hidden minor gem. Manhunt 2 was more of an expansion than the polished upgrade I was looking for.
Fuck I was so much Thor High Heels when I was a kid
sending my well wishes, hope it all works out
Postal 1 ost is so good. Thorhighheels death industrial album when?
Great video and I hope better times are already around the corner.
tommy wright i creep at night type game
Rockstar always seemed to just be under the microscope for news outlets for the longest time it seemed, I guess media just hated that they continued to do as they pleased with games that pushed the envelope
I'll never forget the massive hot coffee controversy, because it's like.. it's not even in the game, technically! You had to go out of your way to get a mod to restore the functionality of this cut in development and half removed feature. But the mere existance of sex minigame, man it caused such a ridiculous moreal uproar.
They got so much free press out of conservative rage! Bioware got some too. For blue alien sideboobs tho. Hence we got bras in shower in ME3.
Damn... thh be lookin kinda cute lately...
Bro I wish you all the best. Hope it goes all smoothly finding a new home :D
But when KingCobra does it you can too haha ^^ btw didn't you say you gonna make a video about rain in videogames on X?
In my prayers, hope things improve 🙏
Attention all Manhunt fans. If you play on PC, there is a remaster mod. Download it and check it out.
I never see your videos on my feed, so I’m glad this one was there
I swear you upload videos about random new interests of mine constantly. I just downloaded Manhunt 1/2 for the first time to check them out this week.
dawg wtf i've been binging your videos back to back and now you got a new one??? HELL YEAH! i love you thor
Thanks for the vid
ur ability to find joy in any game is something of beauty
Wishing you the best Thor!!
Manhunt 3 will never happen, literally.
Maybe one day... but not in the current socio-political situstion.
If there is, it will likely be a re-release 😅
GTA V & Online exists, so yeah, those are the only games they seem to care, ok maybe VI as well but i'm cheating since it hasn't come out yet but you get the idea
Yea rockstar isn’t making no non-gigantic games no more
Thor, you’re an inspiration. Wishing you the very bestest my dude
This is the peak of my recent Manhunt binge
Spyro 1 music being used in the actual game footage of Manhunt is an underrated form of comedic art.
the voice in your ear in the first manhunt is none other than logan roy himself, brian cox!
Yoooo I was just playing this game and got your notification, what a crazy coincidence 😭
15:35 man, I'm sorry to hear that, was that spot in back in May and I'll hope you'll find the same relief soon
hope your doing well thorhighheels
I still have my copy of Manhunt 2 on the PSP and I agree with you on how good looking the port is, only a couple of weapons were cut to meet Sony's regulations . Recently a very early build of the PSP version was leaked and it featured tons of cut content ranging from weapons , environmental executions and enemy designs .
All i need is a Robocop ps1 review and you will have reviewed my total childhood.
