It depends - if the value of the score isn't being used for direct interpretation (like in correlation) just making the score a negative of the original value is fine and very easy to do. The value of the correlation will be identical either way.
I see it too. The R means reverse so if an item is R then its not minus but the opposite. Let say we add number 2 and 3R with scores of 5 and 3 respectively. The total score would be 4 not 2. Because 3r is not equal to negative 5 but 1, so the total score would be different.
reversed items cant be handled by simply putting a minus in front please dont do that! reversed means ( on a scale of one to seven): 1 becomes 7, 2 becomes 6, 3 becomes 5 and so on.....

I put plus to all the items because I've already reversed the code handly (for negative items, i coded 5 for totally desagree and 1 for totally agree, so you don't have to put minus)
