Kuala Lumpur | Cheapest Airport Transfer is Grab App

  • When I travelled to KL for the first time in 2016, it was recommended that I take the airport train to Sentrul and then hop into a taxi to reach the city. Thankfully I learned quickly that using the Grab app is actually the best, cheapest, and fastest airport transfer for KLIA, KLIA2, and Subang Airports from downtown KL. They have a fixed rate for GrabCar to KLIA and KLIA2 at 65 Ringgits (plus tolls if you go that route, which I recommend at less than RM 10 from KLCC). And for Grab Premium, the posh sister of GrabCar that offers up BMWs, Mercedes, Audi, luxe vans, and others you'll pay RM150 to/from KLIA/KLIA2 and just RM 50'ish to/from Subang Airport.
    Pro Tip:
    As a solo traveller, it may seem like the train is an affordable option but it can be a pain in the ass. In fact, it can end up being the most expensive and time consuming option if you're not staying relatively close to KL Sentral. I did it once and that was enough for me, especially considering the amount of gear I lug around.
    Grab vs Train to Kuala Lumpur's Airports
    For 2 people, the train costs RM55 each and you need to still pay for a taxi or Grab to where you're staying.
    With GrabCar, 2 people would pay RM 33 each all-inclusive and 3 people would pay only RM 22 each.

    How Grab App Works
    1. Download the Grab app from either iOS App Store itunes.apple.c... or Google Play play.google.co...
    2. Enter your pickup location (see video for my tips for Subang and KLIA/KLIA2)
    3. Input your drop location (every hotel and building in KL is in there so it's easy peasy)
    4. Order and track your driver's arrival

    Last month I've been Kuala Lumpur for personal trip. I also used local taxi. After then I realize that most of taxi drivers in Kuala Lumpur were sucks! They ask 2times price compare to regular price. If you go to Kuala Lumpur for trip, I recommend ride Grab! They never cheat you

      Ughhhh yes, exactly. We've all been scammed by the taxi guys before discovering Grab.

    Apologies in advance for the long comment. I recently decided to take GRAB from the airport the next time I'm in Malaysia. As the video mentioned, the total cost is RM73 or RM74 including tolls while the train costs RM55/person one-way, so right there GRAB is clearly a better deal if the number of passengers is two or more. For one traveler it's about a wash in terms of money after adding on the trip from KL Sentral (after leaving the train) to your hotel. In terms of time, it's also about the same but it depends on traffic. Next time I will be leaving KLIA around 7am (weekday) which means I'm probably going to hit rush hour. Does anyone know how long a GRAB car would take from KLIA to a hotel in Bukit Bintang under those conditions? I'd be curious to know. Although I'd like to kill time at the airport to avoid rush hour, I may not have that option. In addition to a GRAB car being more convenient (no transfer at KL Sentral) I didn't care much for the train even though it was quick (28 minutes to KL Sentral). The train has (loud) tv monitors that play video commercials and, in my opinion, annoying music. Your only defense is to bring your own music player.

    The bus is the best option for travellers, only RM12 from the airport to KL Sentral. And from there you can easily connect by MRT. This is much cheaper than Grab and is quite safe.

    • @AngelaCarson
      @AngelaCarson  5 лет назад +2

      Hey, that's great it works for you. I agree it's much cheaper but it's not convenient (Grab to Sentrul, buy tix, wait for bus, drop close but not AT my entry door) and for me, it's not as pleasant at all. Sadly I would never take the bus to/from the airport because going door to door is essential as a solo traveller with my heavy videography gear and luggage.

      @@AngelaCarson Hi Angela! How do you do? I agree with you. Taking bus from KLIA to KL Centre is nightmare for me last time. After I have reached KL Centre (almost 10:00pm), then have to take taxi back home but they always scammed you by telling you from point A to my drop off place cost this price (for instance RM40) without meter. That night I back to KL with my wife and my two children, so what to do due to felling very exhausted and eventually have no choice to except the price they offered.

    • @AngelaCarson
      @AngelaCarson  6 лет назад

      Perfect. Grab is the only way I travel to/from the airport because I live right downtown in KLCC. And they are the only ones with a fixed rate. You'll pay at least double if you go with a normal taxi :-(

      thanks Angela

    • @AngelaCarson
      @AngelaCarson  6 лет назад +1

      Sure :-) The fixed rate is 65 Ringgits from the airport to anywhere in KL. If you go with a taxi, you'll pay between 120 - 230 ringgits depending on the time of day. It's crazy.

    • @firatcavas6431
      @firatcavas6431 6 лет назад

      okeyyyy : ) then maybe taking the Train or MRT or Bus is much much cheaper...i will decide when i arrive after 12 flight from Germany...if i have still energy i go maybe for subway if not i take grab..i think i in KL around 9 clock in the morning so i have time

    • @AngelaCarson
      @AngelaCarson  6 лет назад

      Oh Ive never looked into the bus, that may be. And the only way the train + MRT is less expensive (you can't take only MRT) is if you're travelling alone and you are staying right next to Sentral station. Otherwise you will spend 55 ringgits on airport express + grab or taxi or mrt to wherever you're staying. The buses are really cheap in Malaysia but again you'll have the issue of then having to go from the station to your lodging. Anyway, good luck! If you think about it, let me know how you end up going in the end and the cost :-) Would love to know. Bon voayge :-)

      Grab is still the best and cheapest, I used it every month for airport transfers until I moved to Pakistan in February. Try to download app before you arrive and get it setup. You might not be able to until you are at the airport but there is free wifi or go onto roaming. You can pay cash so either have credit card setup or have some Ringgit :-)

      hey there I'm leaving for Kuala Lumpur in 7 days . How did it go using the grab app? were the drivers good and friendly? were the prices fair?

    • @AngelaCarson
      @AngelaCarson  3 месяца назад

      @@MrAchilles121 Grab is the best. It's cheapest ride into KL (normally 70 ringgit, compared to train which is 55 i think + then you need to take a grab from station to where you're staying so ends up much higher). Try to download the app before you go but often it's only possible "in country". In that case, try airport wifi or you'll need a local sim too but those are cheap and cheerful and you can buy as you're existing gate before you get to immigration i think in some terminals. You can pay cash or use card. I used it in many SEA country, they are the best since Uber left years ago

      this will depend where your flying from domestic/international
      I came from international so it was terminal 2

      Yeah I read that, very cool. I'm still going to take Grab (just like for KLIA) cuz it takes me more time and is more expensive to Grab to Sentrul + train than to just go direct with Grab. Plus I save time and arrive fresh and unstressed hehe

    The taxi here most of them simply charge their customer without using the meter. Even though it's against the law for not using the meter but they still do that. Then came along Grab and most of the customers prefer Grab and then the taxi drivers blame grab for making them jobless

    Hi Ms. Angela,! I will be travelling solo from Jakarta to KL next week (31st of Dec. 2018). I found your videos really helpful. I am a Filipino expat in Jakarta and traveled Singapore many times already, It will be my first time in KL and would like to ask something about the transportation and KL Sentral Station.
    1st is the transportation. Using Grab is definitely one of the best choice in my list, but may I know if there's any bus from KLIA T1 going to KLCC? and how much is it for bus.
    2nd is KL Sentral is actually is using the train right? so If I use the train, then from KLIA T1 where will be its stop over or end point. is it in KLCC? Thank you. Hope you can help e :) I will appreciate a lot Ms. Angela! :)

    Hello, I'm going to travel solo in Thailand in April. People recommended me the app Grab, so I wanted to create an account on the Grab drivers app. It asks me to sign up, but I can't sign up with any other country outside of Asia? How am I supposed to use this app when in Thailand? I can't find it anywhere online.

    will there be a shop to by a SIM card after arrival at the airport, otherwise i won't be able to use grab? and what do you recommend for the login of grab (phone number, google or facebook)? thanks

    • @AngelaCarson
      @AngelaCarson  5 лет назад

      Hi - yeah in KLIA and KLIA2 you'll find kiosks to buy a sim if you come in during normal hours (not the middl of the night ... but maybe try 7eleven ), which I recommend. But you can also use the free wifi at the airport. As for login, it's a super trustworthy brand so use whichever is easier. I always use email at the start but FB seems like it would be easier.

      Hi - sure, I hope it was helpful. If you are referring to "door to door" I mean that they collect you from your hotel / condo / house and drop to terminal. I know that people looking for "cheap airport transfers" like me sometimes consider train or bus but this is cheapest and most convenient when compared to train for me (and way more relaxed than a bus)

      @@AngelaCarson It doesn't really do a lot of good to download it prior to arriving other than the 10 seconds it takes to get the app. You can't set up an account until you have a phone number that the phone will be using. I won't know that number until after I get a sim card in KL. I'm in Tokyo right now and was hoping to set up my Grab account prior to arriving in the country. Guess that can't happen. Unfortunately, I don't see a way to do that. I'll have to seek out a sim card in Malaysia first.
