- PC Ian MacPherson, from the Metropolitan Police, gives you some useful tips so that you can properly lock your bike while on the streets of London.
@Cycling London Online 2010 Авто/Мото
my lock is more expensive than my bike
im scared thieves will steal the lock
Don't forget to spend at least 10% of the value of your lock on a lock for your lock.
get a lock for your lock also if they steal the lock it would break and be useless
Dzmxge EU What she said... always listen to the impossibly beautiful girl
***** You have to in London. ;-)
No nonsense and to the point!
It's scary that so many folk don't know how to USE a lock, even adequately. Have recently spoken to my neighbour about locking his bike with so much free space, I could get the bike away, just leaving his QR front wheel.
If using ONE lock, replace back QR skewer with normal or security-type skewer. I'd keep front wheel QR for when you want to put cycles into taxis!
Best tip seems to be to park next to PC Ian MacPherson.
Thank you!!! Love London and their people. Nice video. =)
I had never thought it would be necessary to lock both wheel. But this is London :D
Pretty accurate advice, Well said, That's about the same advice i'd give, This cop knows his stuff.
Pity he didn't give advice on what Locking mechanisms to look out for ie: avoid Pin Type Cylinder locks and get Rotating Disc Type systems.
Great locks and great advice. Only trouble is the 2 locks total about 11 lbs.
Thanks, I've never really thought about the thief needing something to lever against. Something to remember!
Very informative. Thank you!
You're right. There certainly are locks better than others and sadly I think it's all about slowing them down and acting as a deterrent, "This is going to be a pain in the ass to steal", etc. Shame really that we have to deal with people like this in our society.
Some very good points here.
This is all very well for small towns but in London they're using cables-less angle grinders (£20 from Argos/ Wilkinsons probably) and can go through ANY lock in under 30secs.
Yes this information film is out of date now. For London, Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow you need a Litelok or Hiplock D1000!
This gives so much better advice than the video I just watched prior to this one.
Splendid vid! Great pointers.
Great stuff. Thank-you.
@Spiderhead1000 Thanks! It's good to know that people liked our work!
very helpful, thank you
These are really useful tips, but a manner of locking the bike is quite troublesome and time-consuming. Assume that there is rainy weather, the woman riding a bike and has to attend to a number of matters in the city. Every time she is forced to deal with wet, unwieldy and pretty heavy equipment. It's a very uncomfortable situation for her, isn't it ? All in all, a large part of the time can take locking and unlocking the bike. I would recommend my video: " bike umbrella presentation". There, in the comments I posted a brief description of the lock to the bike on which I'm working just now. It is completely hassle-free in use, hands-free, works immediately and will combine the advantages of many different locks.
The reason of my determination was the fact that thieves have stolen my 4 bikes in the last few years.
So far the best advise of proper way to lock a bike!! thank you!
That Isis house though!! :D
Gazelle bikes do this to a point, you can lock the back wheel, and have a special chain lock that is fitted to the bike.
Some bastards will still try to steal the saddle...
Bring it with you or put a strap from the frame to the yop
I have a quick release saddle on my bike which has a frame that allows it to be slid back and forth for a better fit, so I just put a padlock around that and attach it to the cable lock that goes through the frame. Not lost the saddle yet, or the bike itself.
THANK YOU SIR
does anyone else see isis house
yousuf kan yes
Wow wtf?
Very much liked the video, but I have a question. I've heard a lot of people mention that there should be as little wiggle room for the look, because this reduces the possibility of the lock being dragged onto the ground and using the hammer to break it. However, I think the U-lock in this video can be broken by a lever a lot easier, especially because there is less room to put the lever in, than the reinforced cable lock.
Get a small cable lock and loop it through the guide rails, then lock it to your frame. Or ditch the quick release for a nut and bolt.
Good advice about not leaving your lock lying on the ground but I think the most common method of breaching a u-lock is by twisting/prying it open with a long heavy pole.
that is a very good idea, it should detect that you are touching it and after 3 sec. you will get shocked. it should come with a small remote so you can disarm it safely.
@mattgieslerrocks
you can get a kyptonite wire and loop that through the bottom of your saddle and back to the lock.
Good value video
The age before the cordless angle grinder. Hiplok D1000 & Litlok are the only locks good enough for London
Well done; much appreciated/AES///
If anyone is watching this video for advice, watch "Gone in 60 Seconds - Pinkbike". It shows that any bicycle lock on the market can be cut through within seconds!
@JediAaron14
I believe that is a Abus Granit Steel O Flex lock.
@burnzy3210
Use a decent chain if the weight isn't too much, though decent D-locks and cable locks are ok alternatives. D-locks can be pretty easy to defeat with no noise
.
Hi, I just got a new road bike yesterday in decathlon and I bought this thing for £10 which replaces the quick release things for both bike wheels and the allen key slot used to move around the seat. The lock is a five sided allen key and with a screw head at the end of it. Yes a thief can buy that tool but it’s better than nothing.
So true!
Yep. I'm definitely going this route myself, but will it deter a thief? How about integrated bike alarm systems?
Better to go through the back wheel's rim as well as the seat tube with that U-lock. I generally just remove the front wheel and add it to that equation at the back.
that feeling when you go back to your bike, evidence of some noob tried using a hacksaw to saw my chain off lol.
Think the best way is to carry out a surveillance operations at bike racks now and again while carrying out pickpocket, shoplifting, car break in and burglary operations in the same area!
If you can only get one lock then i advise getting the U lock its steel and hard to break and very little gaps between the bike and the stand
Damn, that's a bad ass helmet
Thanks
I remember the days when police were very interested to know what you had in your bag especially after dark!
my bike got stolen and i found it in the town center locked up(d lock) so i rang the police,,, they told me there croppers woudnt cut the lock, and left me to deal with it cheers for your help then they were gone, i asked a group of huddies to help me to realeas my bike , ten seconds later i had my bike back cost me two ciggies.,..
@chalitzah while insurance is a good idea, most thieves wont be carrying power tools, unless you leave your bike overnight/ for long periods of time
I saw some videos in which they pick the U locks with the tube of a pen. How good are they, really?
Sound advice, but only if you use BOTH of the items in the video. Those cable locks aren't as beefy as they look. I'd use one to look after a single wheel, but certainly not an entire bike.
Not London but a small North Yorkshire town - but if you use a good D for the frame and one wheel, how thick does the lock for the remaining wheel need to be? Thinking of the balance between weight carried and security.
In answer to comments below about inconvenience: The D is an Abus Ultimate 23cm which clamps onto the seat stay when not in use, so it's always with the bike and always convenient. If the D alone was enough then it would be very easy - just insert key, remove lock from clamp, place around bike and solid object, remove key, walk away.
Buying a new set of tires would be a good idea :)

Doesn't matter how you lock your bike, or how many different locks you put on it. All a thief needs is an angle-grinder and it's as good as gone. There are even portable angle-grinders that are so cheap and easy to use which are also battery powered so thieves don't even need to worry about having a power source to hook it up to. With that, it takes less than a minute to cut off even the most secure bike locks available on the market now. My advice: Bring your bike in with you if you can to wherever you're going. If you're going to class. set the bike somewhere you can keep your eyes on it while having lecture. If you work in an office, simply bring the bike in with you, and lock the office if you plan to leave. Whatever you do, the key is to just be close by.
The police officer was not implying that we or the thief should feel any sense of pride in having to work harder to remove the bike. He was merely making the connection between effort and result i.e. Mr Thief will have to work hard thus he'll have to put in the effort and maybe give up if he decides the effort is too much.
What type of cable lock is that?
I've almost lost my bike yesterday outside a Starbucks at English Bay Vancouver B.C.. The thief was carry a bolt cutter and did it just a sec in front of me. Luckily some good guys help me hunted down the thief.
Somebody tried to steal my bike a couple of weeks ago. I used the flexible lock shown in this video. The thieves couldn't cut or break the lock and they ended up leaving my bike alone. I'm still using the flexible lock. Jobs a good un'.
which make / model is that?
@weeweeeewee they are not 'bald', they are for commuting on road with added benefit of tread on the tyres edges to assist in light offroading, they are like this from new.
Good, solid advice on locks and locking, nicely-produced video, but the bicycle is theft bait with its $1300 US (1000 Euro, 1100 pound UK) Rohloff Speedhub. This is extreme theft bait. Merely cutting the rear hub out of the wheel would make a good haul for a thief. A stealth bicycle, which looks like trash but rides like a dream, is most appropriate if it is going to be locked up in the city.
Cycking london with an edinburgh accent! love it :)
Ps. Large shops I.e. B&Q, Wicks, Pc World, Curry's, all thoes types of mega store sometimes let you take it in. I for one when im at work let cyclists put there bike in the front of the store.
It doesn't hurt to ask.!
What the helpful copper forgot to mention is not to forget to take your big ass ruck sack to carry the big ass locks! And you'll need even bigger locks if the location has no purpose built cycle stands and you have to improvise which is more often than not the case. Good advice but if they want the bike badly enough they'll take the stand, or whatever it's chained too, with it!
YES. they do.
I had a vintage bike with u-lock on it, well, my bike disappeared with the u-lock left hanging there. They cut a piece off the frame..(!!!!!)
now, got 2 u-locks, other one is kryptonite new york, and a wire. still there! :)
sick forks
I now have two different types of d locks , if I will be leaving bike at a place for some time will double lock it
a D lock with a circle key can be opened with a pen tube.
It all comes down to how much you value your bike. My bike is my vehicle. I don't own a car or have a drivers license. So I can't afford to have my bike stolen. So carrying the extra lock is worth the hassle.
Check it out jack2200ful. If I'm not mistaken, those locks, cable and u, were not going through the wheels ONLY, but through the wheels and the frame.
And how am I supposed to transport the heavy locks?
WasGibtEs Leute back pack, in the basket of your bike if you have one. keep it around the bike. Common sense. People cary groceries on a bike, but a 5 l lock is to heavy.
Shane Botwin
I am not one of these people and I don't want to scratch my bike.
Then don't complain.
WasGibtEs Leute Get a Knog Bouncer D-lock and a Knog Kabana cable lock if you don't want to worry about scratching your bike.
+WasGibtEs Leute with a bigger bike :D
"You better want it schu the schweel and schru the schrame so the both mets on the other side"
good deal
+1 for broken video.
Hahah Isis house, 67-69. Wtf
Kris Kieronski Haha
If anyone is wondering, if you download the video using some sort of browser extension, it may play. It has for me anyway.
Imagine during presentation somebody catch the unlock police man bike behind and gone. :D
some can be solid inside so dont buy cheap ones or it will be a linked hollow metal
i cant afford expensive locks, so i buy mine from poundland for £1 each. that is fantastic value and saves me a lot of money and i wouldnt buy any other. its just a shame i have to spend a fortune on new bikes every couple of weeks.
Underrated 😂😂
The cop should be done for having bald tyres on his vehicle ;) lol.
But yeah, great advice.
That isn't his bike ffs. His is behind him with police clearly stamped on his high visibility paint job

My friend has a knock off of the new york lock. It's a really heavy duty chain. There is no way you are going to clip that with bolt cutters. You would have to be exceptionally strong and use really big bolt cutters.
anyone know what bike this is??? the white one
Given that I have the locks, someone tell me where to purchase that stand!
@py2o3434 assuming from the video, a strong cable lock.
@bcasey1 Yes... a U-lock & chain is what I am going to get to secure my bike. I have yet to buy my bike but the bike costs $379 & it would hurt me VERY bad if someone was to steal it from me.
With the back wheel, I think you went through spokes, but not the wheel itself. May not matter but doesn't seem optimum.
Decent cycling infrastructure (like in the Netherlands) would make the biggest difference to cycling rates, I don't think bicycle theft is really preventing more people from cycling (it's worse in London though).
@crzune bike alarm? didnt know they existed! but its the same as car alarms- they just piss people off for the day whilst your at work!
"this is called a d-lock or a u-lock" well more often D-Lock, I think u-lock is a good name for after its been broken off x-D
holy hell that's a big ass cable lock to carry around... i'm thinking of getting 2 locks and lock the front and back wheels... i live on mid-beach[above sobe miami] and just got my first bike last Saturday. haven't gotten it stolen.... yet :/
Need to get good locks guys , last year my brothers Chopper Bike and my mums bike were taken and they were locked up in my Carport
Not bald. Some are designed this way with extra tread on the outside for faster cornering without giving way. A lot of people just don't go fast enough around a corner to justify leaning.
death penalty for bikes thieves, then no need of lock !
OhNoNotMyPenis The death penalty is stop the people in law-braking very well, but there are a few idiots of course, who must die. This kind of social selection works like the natural one. ;-)
+Hervé Champeaux the new Knog Bike Axe ^^
+Origenes Trismegistos its called the darwin awards! btw maybe just the removal of the toes and some fingers.. then we can spot thieves easier..
fam bolt cutters wont stop me from pretty little locks
Did You See The State Of His Front Tyre? LOL
Im sporting a tremendous woody right now
Can anyone identify the cable lock he used?
Leave a bait bike watched by a police sniper. That should clear up the theft problem.
why if they really get pissed and break the thing where u put the bike on
something is wrong with the video, either youtube or the video itself, starting at 00:21 the image is still although the thumbnails show animation.
Interestingly the video plays fine on iOS.
How about the seat? He never chain it to the frame.
I would carry like ten lock with me ...
If only he met Wil Weaton eating cool whip
