Most of these people didn't 'quit'. They retired for illness, family, got tired of the demands of acting or careers that simply ended. Not everyone can work into their 90's like George Burns and Betty White. The child actor who played Charlie in Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder made that one movie and never acted again. He did what he wanted to do - he became a veterinarian.

In the early 1960s when I was 15 I wrote to Dolores Hart (who is still alive despite another comment here) when I found out that she had given up acting to be a nun. I was in a religious phase (only lasted til I discovered boys)!, and I knew she had joined a convent in Cincinnatti. She wrote back to me a lovely long letter giving me great advice to wait until I was older and was sure I still wanted to be a nun, and wished me all the best. She became the Abbess some years later.

Please Don’t Spill The Daisies and, then, later she had a talk show, that I also would watch religiously when, I could.
