- This is a MUST HAVE tool for someone who struggles with tension 😍 Remember to check out our blog to figure out the best way to hold your yarn, to avoid tension problems... But... If the issues persist, then we recommend trying out the Crochet Tension Regulator!
How to Ensure Even Tension throughout Your Crochet Project:
hobbii.com/blo...
Today's tutorial is for those of you who struggle with tension. Figuring out the perfect tension can be very frustrating 😅 - especially for a beginner or someone who has trouble closing their hand.
The Crochet Tension Regulator allows you to relax your non-dominant hand, as it controls your tension for you. You simply place it on your index finger, pull the yarn through one of the windows and crochet as you usually would 🥰
Supplies needed:
Any Worsted Weight yarn - I used Cotton 2 from Mayflower: shop.hobbii.com...
A crochet hook that fits your yarn - I used a size 3.5 mm hook.
We are working with 3 different stitches, creating 2 rounds of sc, 1 round of dc and 1 round of hdc. This way we will create little windows that are different in sizes. This means that you can use this regulator with different yarn types. Just find the window that fits the thickness of the yarn you want to work with.
Abbreviations US terms:
St(s) - Stich(es)
Ch - Chain
Sl st - Slip stitch
Sc - Single Crochet
Hdc - Half Double Crochet
Dc - Double Crochet
*the chains in the beginning of each round counts as the first stitch.
Pattern:
Make a foundation chain that fits around the top of your index finger. For me that was 10 chains.
Slip stitch to the 1st chain to form a circle.
-
Round 1: Ch 1, put 1 sc in each st around. At the end sl st to the ch 1 you made in the beginning.
Round 2: Repeat round 1.
Round 3: Ch 3, put 1 dc in each st around. At the end sl st to the ch 1 you made in the beginning.
Round 4: Ch 2, put 1 hdc in each st around. At the end sl st to the ch 1 you made in the beginning.
To finish: Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Omg...it works like a charm. My hand doesn't hurt anymore trying to hold the yarn so tight. Thank you so much for such a good idea. Just to let you know I have been crocheting for 30 + years, so you can teach an old dog new tricks. Lol Took me all of 5 minutes to get used to the tension regulator..
Hi Donna 😍 I'm so happy to hear that you liked the regulator! I know ALL ABOUT the hand pain 😂 So for me, this has been a true lifesaver! Warm wishes, Line from Hobbii 🥰
Wish my tension was good enough to make one! Catch 22. Struggling!
Ohhhh wie toll ist das denn! Ich häkele seid 65 Jahren und nun lerne ich noch solch einen tollen Trick ganz lieben Dank ….. Die Damen von HOBBII sind super . Ich liebe euch 😘😘😘😘
Perfect instructions, perfect voice, perfect music and perfect objective!! Thank you very much.
I found 2 patterns for this and made both. They really do work! I find it hard to crochet it in the round though so I cheated and just did it flat and then stitched together. I found it easier to fit my finger that way--the first one I tried was too small (I measured towards the top of my finger and it was too tight to slide down). When I make it flat I can more easily adjust it.
I would recommend making a few. I keeping one attached to a project so I don't have to rethread the yarn.
Thank you!
I joined a knitting and crochet group before the pandemic hit and made a bunch of these for everyone. It's a nice quick little practice piece and it feels good to actually complete something in a short period of time as a beginner. I wish there were more patterns for men. I'm finding it difficult to find things to make other than scarves and hats.
Have you tried making amigurumi? I think it’s alot more fun than doing clothes, scarf etc. ☺️
@@HadmanX yeah I've looked at some of those but I tend to prefer making practical items.
I totally understand your problem. My boyfriend always complains it is so hard to find nice mens clothing. Women have so many options and the guy section is always so small and boring.
I just started crochet and already noticed there are so few mens patterns. And most are quite outdated stylewise.
I will keep you in mind when I find something nice :)
I made scarves for Christmas years ago, but I also made lap blankets...my dad loved his! I chose 3 of his favourite colors, made (3) 6 row granny squares, connected them, them crocheted those same colors around them until I could drape it over my lap, comfortably. He was really surprised & seemed to really like it. I told him he could use it on his lap or over his shoulders. Once I can get more yarn, I plan on making several more scarves & lap blankets to donate in memory of him & my Uncle Mac to fellow veterans (Momma, Daddy, Mac & I all served in the US Navy).
I don't know if you would want to try this lap blanket/shoulder wrap idea for yourself, but it's an option...😊
Depending on what country you're in, you may find inspiration at your local library. I've seen books with just men's clothing in America.
Thank you so much for this video. My arthritic fingers thank you too. I've never had trouble with tension, but the fingers don't work like they used to. I just made one of these and am amazed at the ease of using it. I am to thankful to you for sharing this.
Thank you so much! I always had problems with tension regulation and now i make wonderful projects!
Fabulous. I was looking at those metal tension rings as it popped up in Facebook ads. They can be purchased for less than a US dollar at TEMU with zero shipping. The fact that I don't like to wear jewelry would be a contrary reason to buy a metal one.
I remembered seeing tutorials for a pattern and after looking through a few I settled on yours.
I just made one of these from your instructions. I like having the double crochet stitches in the middle of the single crochet and hdc. It just makes sense.
Pros: The yarn is through the tensioner so it won't get lost like a ring would. I made it in bright carrot orange sock yarn, so it will be easy to locate for next use.
The yarn isn't needing to be constantly adjusted because it stays put.
With the yarn staying in place, I only need to control slight tension under the middle finger and over the ring finger. No extra wrapping.
I look forward to trying it with knitting as I use the Russian knit and purl method of knitting, just pick up the yarn and scoop it through. No extra twists of the needle to make the yarn sit on the needle a certain way as I can see at a glance what the stitch is by how it sits on the needle. ruclips.net/video/vKG85tJcgCQ/видео.html
As I tend to work on multiple projects, I will need to make several tensioners, but that won't be an issue.
Love this idea! I never had trouble in the past with having the right tension until I had surgery on my hand and elbow. I find that I have weakness in my hand and can't maintain tension. It has been so bad in the past that I just quit crocheting for about a year. Some days are better than others but I think this will solve my tension problem. Thanks Hobbii!
I'm learning to knit. My tension is so loose. I do crochet & have no problem with tension. Going to try this. Thank you!
OMG!!!! Thank you for sharing, im left-handed and the rings didnt work for me. I love how my work is coming out.
Thank you so much for this tip. I am going to make a few of them today - I can see them being something the cat will steal if she get chance to I need a few.
Hi Patricia :-) I'm sure your cat will be very interested in the regulator! 🐈 Good thing it doesn't take too long to make one 😍 Warm wishes, Line from Hobbii
Thank you so much for sharing! My most perplexing issue with this favorite pastime of mine is sizing! I can’t wait to try it out! It’s wrapped around my index finger as I type… crocheted along with you, pausing between rounds 💕
What a wonderful tool! I am making two today, one for myself and one for my grand daughter. Thank you
im trying to crochet again but i forgot how an youe ideas r helping me learn again so thank you.
What a clever idea, and a practical use for scrap yarn! I suppose that the hook size and yarn used aren't terribly important here, since one is working to the size of one's finger. (And if it's scrap yarn of a type one typically uses, and a hook size one typically uses, the slots created by the different stitch heights will be likely to work with most yarns one typically uses. I'll have to try making one of these this weekend. Mange takk!
Instructions are in the description if you need them.
Thank you so much ! I'm very careful with my wips but my tension has been off lately due to arthritis & it makes my rows " go in" leaving my afghan shorter on one end...I'm hoping this will help !! Be well !🦋
I most definitely need one of these. Great idea. I'll probably be making a couple of these today!!! Tyfs God bless you
Great tip and so easy to make and use. Thank you for sharing with us. 🥀❣️
Thank you for this detailed and simple explanation to do this
What a neat accessory. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Super Idee, musste es gleich ausprobieren, es funktioniert wunderbar.👍🤩
Dit is Geniaal !!
Zo fijn . Alleen soms blijf je met de haaknaald erin hangen ,( dat is minder )
Maar het is heel fijn werken . 👍 Messchien maken van stof of zo dat je er niet in kan blijven steken
This is genius! Is it crochet tension only or will do with knitting as well?
Qué buena idea! Nunca se me hubiera ocurrido, a ver si lo pruebo 🥰
THANK YOUUUU
I made one of these today 😁. I only made 3 rounds as I have a short finger. I skipped round two.
Hi weenieboys :-) Happy to hear that you were able to customize the regulator 😍 Warm wishes, Line from Hobbii
Nette Idee, aber da brauche ich ja jede Menge von. Für jede angefangene Arbeit eines. Ohje :-)
Amazing idea 😉
I love your yarns. I like to have #24 emerald,#36 coral,#37 red or #32 blue hyacinth.
Can we do an additional round, chaining 3 to create a double crochet row?
Would it be a good idea to do a 2nd tensioner ring for your ring finger, too, to help keep the working yarn a little more tangle free, or would you recommend just doing the one for your index finger?
I have larger, arthritic fingers. I haven't crocheted in a while because it was too difficult for me to keep tension at a proper level. I was going to buy one of those pretty metal adjustable tensioner rings, but then I saw various videos about how to crochet one instead! I really enjoyed watching them, especially yours! Thank you for sharing this tutorial!😊
Hobbii ist einfach toll.,immer wieder gerne.
Genius!!! Thank you!
Any advice on how to use this when I’ve already started a project?
Cut yarn (leaving a little tail) weave new yarn through the thumb regulator thing and join it again (using your preffered join method) Keep crocheting!
With new yarn I mean the yarn ball you just cut btw
Thank you!!!
Ingenious! I am going to give it a try! BTW what’s the name of your music? Sounds like something Acoustic Alchemy would have done.
Hi Fiona 😊 I'm exited to hear how you like the regulator 😍 The song is called "Wishful Thinking" and it's from RUclips's sound library 🎶 Warm wishes, Line from Hobbii
What am I doing WRONG !!!!!!!....I cant even make the tension regulator because my stiches or to tight or to loose or one end is bigger then the other end, HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is genius. only you sometimes get caught in it with your hook , while working.
Very nice
I love the idea of this "tool", however, doesn't the use of this tool mean that the working yarn will have to be cut if you don't use the entire skein?
Hi Sapphire 😊 Thanks for reaching out 🥰 Yes, you would have to cut the yarn and weave in the ends once you are done with your project. Warm wishes, Line from Hobbii 🥰
Merci pour super astuce 😘
Nice 👌
Hello, it's a nice tool & comfort to the finger, but I have a question (which I could just test it later tonight), will it really have a good hold of your tension? no loose yarn? I often work with fingering weight of yarns, because I live in tropical country, rarely use thicker yarns, and I need to round the yarn 2-3 times to have a semi-tight tension.
thank you anyway for your video, will try this soon ♥
I just made one of these and found that instead of pulling the yarn through only one window if I pull it through a window on the bottom row (closer to the base of your finger) then pull it again through a top window (closer to the tip of your finger) that the tension was a lot better.
@@jaspirita oh this is helpful! thank you 🤗
can you start it with a magic circle????😄😅
Can i use this for knitting?
Bonne idée.
Merci
What size hook did you use? 4 mm?
What am I doing wrong. The yarn is rubbing against my finger and causing yarn burn. I was hoping this would help me. Any ideas. Thanks bunches
Nifty idea
im a complete beginner and can only make simple squares so i was kinda confused and make a different one lol
Hmm mine ended up looking like an egg cup 😂somehow I made extra stitches as I went down each round
What size hook did you use
It's in the description. I used a 3.75 mm as that was the smallest I had. I made three rounds instead of four for my finger size. 1sc round, 1 DC round and 1 hdc round. Hope that helps you.
@@missweenieboys2 ok thank you love your work
"Start by making your foundation chain..."
WAAAAAGH I'M ALREADY STUCK I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO IS ALL TOO HARD EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE R3333333333333333333
If anyone wants me I'll be in front of the fridge mainlining ice-cream
When you can't build the tensioner because you crochet so tight a needle head won't fit through the wholes 😫😫
Pls stop the music and get closer to the craft
