    ------------------------------
    Whether a tree needs to be staked or not can be determined by multiple factors:
    - the type of tree that’s planted
    - how large the root ball is
    - how open the area is where it's planted (considering wind)
    - how tall the tree is
    If you can move the tree around easily or know with your weather conditions that wind will be a factor, it's best to stake the tree for the first 2-3 years. Stabilizing the tree maintains its stature and keeps it growing upright.
    Minimal tools are needed to stake a tree - just a few essentials:
    - 2 T-posts
    - 2 tree straps (nylon straps)
    - wire or twine
    Pound in each post on opposite sides of the tree until the “T” is securely in the ground. Place a strap around the tree. Use wire to connect the strap securely to the T-post. Make sure the tree is straight and twist wire to tighten. Repeat on the remaining T-post (on the opposite side of the tree), making sure the tree has slight give both ways.
    After a year or two, check the tree by wiggling it slightly. If the root ball still moves easily, leave the stakes in. If the tree is solid, remove the straps. Leaving the straps on too long can hinder growth.

    Don't make it too rigid. Moving in the wind is actually part of what strengthens the tree.
    Two years is excessive. I've planted a bunch of trees and have never staked any, except for tall bare root trees a client bought. Just pack them in and water them in well - this is not necessary 100% of the time. I've seen far more damage from doing this by default than not. Especially when people inevitably forget and the tree has to grow around the forgotten straps.

      question: for newly planted trees (3' green giants in my case) where the bottom of the truck is actually straightly planted, but the tops are crooked...do you tie those? Or will the upper half eventually straighten out? I just planted 51 trees this past weekend and maybe 5 or 6 have the top halfs crooked...even though the bottom is straight. Looks like maybe wind bent the top half. Thank you Pamela

      @@wtfx5757 you can do a temporary stake like braces to help retrain it, just don't make it too tight or forget to remove it before the wood grows around it.

    It seems like this tree doesn't have enough wiggle room after staking to learn to stabilize itself, so I'm worried it has become dependent on the stakes. Is there a follow-up video on this tree?

    • @Mudcat3434
      @Mudcat3434 Год назад

      Exactly. This is not the proper way to stake a tree. It needs to be loose to allow the tree to sway and develop structural roots.

    • @heyhayhay247
      @heyhayhay247 4 месяца назад +1

      That's a gradual process. You want no movement at the initial planting then you can loosen the straps after the first few months of letting the roots establish themselves. That tree should have been strapped as soon as it was planted.

      @@heyhayhay247 I'm a certified arborist. Best to plant trees without stakes but if you do use them, they need to come off after 1 yr max, and it absolutely needs to be able to wiggle and move while staked. That's how it develops strength. 🌳❤

    Approximately how long should you leave tree staked; 6 months, one year, or more? My community has some trees that have been staked for over 3 years which seems excessive to me. Then when high winds hit the trees still end up falling over because of lack of root development. Landscape company doesn't care because they don't guarantee the tree so they get paid to replace them when they topple over or snap off.
