Now I may not like or want Trump occupying the President's office but as a head of state from a separate country, I was under the impression that a handshake is okay and still respectful. To bow and curtsy is a choice and sign of respect that isn't necessary for a head of state from a separate country. We as America, fought a war and won our independence from the UK and it's monarchy centuries ago. Furthermore, the Queen actually made the mistake by not ensuring she was heard by Trump (when she waved to him to move closer to the guards), but in fact Pres. Trump did'nt move closer and waited for the music to begin (which begins the walk). International protocol dictates that a visiting Head of State or a Prime Minister will walk on the side closest to the guards (the honoured position), and the host walks on the farthest side (which is what you see when they're actually walking together, and it is this reason why the Queen realizes she made the mistake and returns back to her original position) - so it's actually both the Queen and the President's mishap. I will never understand why the leader of the most powerful nation in the world has to bow to a queen who is essentially a show pony for her nation. He should show her respect as a human being but he should not be expected to cater to her for being a queen.
I don't think any president goes half way around the world to do a rehearsal as this commentator suggests, and I don't think the Queen would join in that rehearsal if he did come. No Head of State bows to any other Head of State - that is international protocol.
Even a British citizen does not need to curtsey or bow, there is no royal dictate that orders people to bow or curtsey - if you want to then you can (except that royals are required to show deference to those higher up the order of precedence). Furthermore, the Queen actually made the mistake by not ensuring she was heard by Trump (when she waved to him to move closer to the guards), but in fact Pres. Trump did'nt move closer and waited for the music to begin (which begins the walk).
International protocol dictates that a visiting Head of State or a Prime Minister will walk on the side closest to the guards (the honoured position), and the host walks on the farthest side (which is what you see when they're actually walking together, and it is this reason why the Queen realizes she made the mistake and returns back to her original position) - so it's actually both the Queen and the President's mishap. CNN - you don't know anything, and your choice of commentators are terrible.

Kveta Kaplan this is what I replied in an earlier post. My understanding is you don’t prompt or initiate a handshake until or unless the Queen prompts or initiates it first. She prompted/initiated it first on both the President and the FLOTUS. I’m not English, but that is what I’ve read and heard.

Her Majesty the Queen is Head of State in the U.K. and many other countries. She reigns, but does not rule and I think this is a perfect arrangement.
