Hi everyone! I uploaded a studio vlog where I walk you through my design process of making washi tapes. This video would be the perfect next step after you've found your manufacturer. Thank you so much for these tips 😊 I've fallen in love with the idea of washi tapes and it would be awesome to make my own one day. I have one question tho when designing what size canvas do you use? I also only have access to illustrator
They were super fun to make 😊 I don't remember exactly the length (it was 150mm and 250mm depending on whether I wanted it matte or foiled) and a height of 18mm. This MAY differ with manufacturers so it's best to ask them to check 😊
Hi! Thanks for the video! ❤️ I'm currently working on some designs and looking for a manufacturer, but I have a question about the finish. I noticed many have that as one of the steps in the process and option for matte or glossy, but I didn't even realize that was a thing for washi! I'm not sure what all the ones I own are. Did this come up for you when discussing? Do you know if they default to one or the other? Thank you so much for any insight you have! 🥰
hmm i've never heard of a glossy finish. I've only dealt with matte and foiled washi. I'm assuming matte is the general non-foiled washi tapes and the most common type of washi (and also cheaper!). I do have a roll of washi tape (that I got separately) which feels like a thicker clear material so many that's what they mean by glossy? If anything, you could ask your manufacturer for some photos to see the difference between the two! Hope this kind of helps.
hi. Thank you for this video. But I was wondering how your page looked liked. Was it just one crazy long strand of design or just one line or one repetition? Or maybe the print page with many design lines under each other?
Do you mean how the design canvas looked like? It was basically one really thin horizontal canvas with my design repeated 3-4 times. It does look kind of strange on the canvas haha
Hey thanks for the tips. By roll does that mean like the individual tapes or 1 whole roll with multiple designs cut into diff sizes? Bec i see some with prices per roll then there's prices per pieces.
They should mean the same thing but it doesn't hurt to double check with the manufacturer! I would take it as one roll means one individual tape. Hope that helps! 😊
I'm glad it helps ^^ I start on the size based off what my manufacturer wanted. I can then export the file as a photoshop (psd) file to edit in Photoshop.
Hi! Thanks for the video! May I know when you do your design on procreate, do you draw them in cmyk or rgb? I usually do my artwork in rgb because they will be posted on social media by default. If I were to make them into washi tape, does that mean I have to convert them into cmyk first?
I drew mine in CYMK because that's what my manufacturer wanted and yes I converted it before drawing! My friends who studied graphic design said rgb is mostly used when doing art for online and CYMK for if you're creating physical items 😊
When the design is in jpeg then it was cropped into the size of regular washi tape then has the design for the length of example 3". What will I ask to the manufacturer to make the roll 5m in length with the continuous design? Will they edit them for me?
From my experience, you'll have to repeat the design on your own for a few patterns to meet their horizontal image requirements (mine was around 150mm). After that, they will edit it for you so it keeps going for the full 5m.
Hello , I was surprised for the cost of the sample I asked in alibaba. I ask 22 items of washi tapes for quotations and customized with my own logo. It’s 95USD for the 22 items of sample to be send here in Europe. It’s quite expensive to ask a sample
yeahh it was really expensive to get samples for me too :( i kinda just hoped for the best the first order haha but they did have a lot of good reviews already so i did feel safer ordering from them.
thank you for this video! i already sent out a design to my manufacturer and they just told me yesterday that they shipped out my rolls! i forgot to ask about packaging and i haven't designed a logo or anything like that. do you have any tips on packaging washi tapes or where to find packaging supplies?
You could probably buy some sticker paper from Walmart, staples, or target (if you're in the states). Then you can draw a small design on your apps and print it onto the sticker sheet. If you don't have a sticker cutting machine, you would have to hand cut it 🙃 but it's cost efficient! Just takes longer 😅 a quick little way to jazz up your washi tapes! Haha All the tapes SHOULD already come wrapped in heat shrunk plastic (although I can't guarantee 100%).
hello. what is the paper called used in making the regular washi? and what do they use to stick it? i want to do the washi tape like a regular one but i don't know the materials :(
Hi there! My dimensions were specific to my manufacturer. I cannot guarantee that what mine was will be the same as yours. It best to ask your manufacturer for their exact dimensions :)
I may be a bit late, but I was wondering what the average shipping cost is! I know that it can differ between the manufacturers and the amount ordered/weight, but it would be great to know an average! (This is of course if you'd want to share)
Hmm I'm not too sure how much it would be for everywhere else :( mine was $55USD. It would depend on how many rolls you get and where you live. Maybe you can use mine as an estimate. Hope it helps!
Did you have to worry about a freight forwarder and if so, could you explain how the process works for that? Do they pay? do you pay? Or is it included in the price? Also did you have to pretend you are a big company to make an order? Thanks in advanced! Great video! ❤️
Hihi! I'm not sure what a freight forwarder is so I'm going to say no 😅 also no I didn't have to pretend to be a big company. I don't even think they asked me why I was making it 😂

Wish I could help more but yeah I've never experienced having to deal with that or manufacturers not wanting to work with me because I'm a solo entrepreneur haha they do have a minimum order quantity per roll but that's usually between 50-100 (depends on manufacturer).
