Fascinating Off-Grid Home Built with Natural & Salvaged Materials - Eco Village Living

- Freya's House is an off-grid green building that showcases multiple natural building techniques from straw bale, cob, and rammed earth walls, to earthen floors, a green roof, and reclaimed, salvaged and locally sourced materials. It uses solar power for electricity, a legal composting toilet, and on-site greywater filtration.
The house is located at O.U.R Ecovillage in Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia, Canada which is a 25-acre Regenerative Living Demonstration, Research Center, and Bioregional School that hosts a land-based permaculture learning community. The O.U.R. vision is "sustainable well-being for the land, ourselves, and our worldwide village."

This housing model is excellent. The natural materials are fantastic, but the co-operative model is what we need more of in Canada. Like she said, "less commodity and more sustainability."😊😊
It makes me cry the way she says this three bedroom house is considered small there. It looks like a spacious castle out of my dreams. What a wonderful home and community and mindset.

I'm still in shock a composting toilet was "illegal", wtf? Common sense isn't very common. Bravo for a job well done 👍, this is how it's supposed to be, zero waste homes and foundations for our families 💚

They, the state, are trying to have everything under their control, even toilets. For example, in the future, there will be control over how fast you breathe because CO2😂.
Composting toilets never were "illegal". But prior to the change you were not allowed to have composting toilets as the only or primary means of sewage treatment. Simple as that. No building permit without a septic system or sewer connection.
I swear, in my (U.S.) county they don't want to approve any build unless it resembles 1960s suburban living. sh*tty tract house made out of sh*tty "new" (wood, concrete, petroleum products) materials, and all the "waste" water going to a septic. Except where I live it might be considered high desert with lots of scrub brush and well water; how many sh*t tract houses with flushing toilets do they think can be built before the groundwater's depleted (and good luck trying to collect rainwater with them watching)?
I just met a couple who, when they were buying their house, the county found out the previous owners had diverted all the sinks/showers/laudry water to the garden, and made them redivert it back to the septic because there might be a "contamination" issue

What a beautiful and well thought out community. Thank you for this video and to Brandy for sharing such important information in designing a building with natural materials that allows for greatest natural heating as well as natural cooling. I have never heard of or seen many of the features she shows us in this video. A great model for others to consider when designing buildings and communities off-grid.
Y'all could get a Saw Mill kit and process your own wood. Another off grid home here on YT is so far out in nature that they have to bring everything by boat to their area. They're trying to leave as little of a footprint as they can so the got a wood mill. I don't know, just an idea🤷♀️

I love videos about eco-villages, and seeing the creativity and different styles that people come up with for building, and dealing with energy, waste water, human waste, etc. (Though perhaps in these cases they really aren't "waste-d" like we do in most settings. Living on the west coast myself, I can tell you that house would be ultra dark in the rainy season.
I thought the entire west coast was dark in rainy season. I don’t know if I could survive out there, I don’t ‘get’ rain.

My suspicion is, this had to be wicked expensive. I hand-built my own house, using many of the concepts shown and I'm here to tell you, "It weren't cheap!"
It’s hard to know what these people mean by “cheap”, and “expensive”, such relative terms. But since a lot of the structure is from salvaged timber I’m sure they saved a lot.

I Southern/Western Europe I would not know how to get such large wooden beams without paying a lot of money
The last part made me wonder: today's world is so 8jter connected and with so much to see, I would not even think a place as beautiful as this necessarily can hold generations. Or maybe they would want return to it after a little exploring. But maybe rather than generations of the same family living in it, the concept may work more for changes of families living their generation after generation. Each in what's the right time and situation for them to seek that type of place and life

Any issues with mold or condensation on the interior, given the different wall materials used?

I wish she opened the "fridge". Was there a regular fridge behind it or something like a restaurant walk in fridge?
I would definitely build my own place with very large roof overhangs, as these people have, here. I’m interested in building a place with a more gradual or intermediary division between inside the house and the outside; porches, gazebos, overhangs, mud rooms, that sort of thing.

Where did you get the heavy rubber liner for your green roof?
Probably it's synthetic rubber but natural rubber can be used and comes mostly from trees. Lots of plants make latex (rubber) but are difficult to harvest economically.
@@nunya___ Right. We often have to make bad decisions because what we need is available elsewhere, but not here. Or is just too expensive. Some people use layers of old carpets.

I'm a Northern European. I can assure Kirsten Dirkson et. al. that it's not possible to reach levels of ingenuity nor autonomy in creating novel houses or eco-villages unless you should be inherited filthy rich, here where I live. There are laws in place here that makes it mostly illegal to salvage or recycle materials by yourself, at least from recycling stations! All things must be bought in stores and many stores are under cartel control with fixed high prices. Especially for food. On top of that we are politically compliant as a vasall state to the US economy in reality paying dividends for US "protection". That means we are not free to trade eastwards towards Russia for cheap energy either. Although my country is rich in renewables as well as fossil resources cartels are jacking up prices to levels above the prices for mid-Europe on our domestic markets. We are forced to do all our transactions financialized under Wall Street and all the investment cockroach funds. There seems to be a policy to drive working people into early disability retirement by heavy exploitation and inducing their bad health outcomes. Still the downtrodden in the US may suffer more, well yes, and that is because here we have a so called "wellfare state". That does not mean empowering people, but making them clients from early in life. We do survive on what for many already has become the de facto reality of Universal Basic Income, and people are afraid to lose even this, as the road towards self sufficiency has been solidly rendered impossible by the behemoth state.
