  • I recently picked up a Martin D-15M acoustic guitar. I parted ways with my Takamine PSF-94 Limited Edition that I had for many years, in favor of a no-frills, all-mahogany acoustic guitar with no electronics.
    Needless to say, this Martin D-15M guitar really sings, and plays very well. Check out this sound demo I recorded with the D-15M.
    No signal processing was done to this at all -- it's as organic and natural as possible, to give you an idea of what to expect from a Martin D-15M. Recorded with an MXL3000 condenser mic into a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB and Cakewalk Sonar Producer Edition 4.
    Song is entitled "Luca's Lute", and was written for one Krystal Allen many moons ago.

    I made a point in this video to record the guitar as plainly as possible -- what you're hearing is a brand new Martin D-15 (hasn't had much time to break in yet) with fresh strings recorded with an MXL3000 condenser. There was no EQ'ing, or effects added to the track -- trying to make it sound as close as possible to what I hear when I'm playing it. That being said, this thing is rich as hell -- the lows and mids easily get a bit boomy in the mic!

    One of the best videos for the D15M. Most make it sound really tinny but it has a rich, warm sound in reality.

    I have one of these guitars too , mine was broken in 4 places when I got
    it in the mail , i had to fix it myself and luckily it came out good, I had to use about 4 cleets on the inside to hold/ pull the cracks together. but I did
    play it for the first time when i received it as a broken guitar and I still remember
    where I was when i first played it bc the tone and sound blew me away,
    it was beautiful even with cracks and holes in it . The legendary
    guitar guru at Martin Guitars, his name is Dick Boak has said that the
    Martin D15M is the best guitar that Martin makes. there is no fancy
    bling or ornate trim etc. but the sound is amazing and the best. Dick
    Boak, look him up, Peace and great playing your video is both inspiring and wonderful, Peace !

    I have a D-15 from 1999 when it was a single all mahogany model. I was drawn to it because of the look, but the sound made me want it. Plus they smell good.

      Seems like whenever I find myself strumming a big E major chord this thing just burps out chocolate-y, woody smelling goodness. It's really a total sensory experience to play one.

    Very nice demo - probably the best one on youtube for this model!
    Out of curiosity, what strings were you using in this video? I've heard that Martin's strings can be very bassy so it may be good to opt for Exilirs instead. Any thoughts?

    Hi Matt, thanx for the review. The sound is incredibly warm and sweet. Which strings are u using in this guitar?

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  7 лет назад +1

      Hey! It's possible I had a set of the stock Martin acoustic strings on it when I got it and filmed this demo, but I usually use light gauge 80/20 bronze Elixir Nanoweb strings.

      @@MattTheGuitarGuy thanks for the reply, I think this is one of the best tone videos for the D15 I’ve heard on RUclips. I got a D15 earlier this year and have been experimenting with all sorts of strings and gauges (Nickel based, 80/20, phosphor bronze), trying to get the most out.
      I flatpick mainly, but I think this guitar is best for fingerpicking, and your playing sounds great here!

  • @lindasilver7426

    you are right...it has a warm big sound...I am looking at the new 'burst' version and I wonder how you attached your guitar strap at the neck? Thanks...wayne...vancouver BC

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  9 лет назад

      Linda Silver Hey Wayne, I used one of Martin's leather head stock strap ties. You can find them on Amazon or many music stores for usually around $8-$10. It's just a big hunk of rawhide with a button sewn to it that lets you attach your strap at the headstock. Those burst D-15's are beautiful guitars, I'm sure it'll sound amazing!

  • @farnorthpicker56
    @farnorthpicker56 10 лет назад

    Matt I flat-pick a lot of fiddle tunes and bluegrass. Do you think it would be suitable for that with the mahogany top?? I'm way up north so there's no where around to go try one without about an 8 hour trip!!

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  10 лет назад

      These D-15M's have a big, bold sound -- it's very earthy, warm, and punchy, and really shines on fingerstyle and flat-picking. Personally, I think it's an excellent acoustic for bluegrass!

    Hi, I have the same Guitar. It has a really warm sound. really good. But the action I think is to high. can you tell me the high in your guitar at the 12° fret? Thanks.

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  10 лет назад

      Hey! When I first got mine (and in this video), the action was way too high. I adjusted the truss rod, then bought an additional saddle and sanded it down a bit smaller than the original saddle that came on the guitar, and now the action is much lower; about 3/32 in. (2.4mm) on the bass side. Still sounds and plays excellent, with no buzz from the lower action!

    • @andreaboni1977
      @andreaboni1977 10 лет назад

      My lutist adjusted the Truss Rod and the (original) saddle. Now is better but it has a little buzz on the Lower E. the 3/32 in. is the high between the fret and the chord (lower E - on the under), 12 fret?

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  10 лет назад

      andrea boni Yes -- the 3/32 is the height between the fret and the underside of the string at the 12th fret.

    little bit of low end rumble, watch your mic positioning, shouldn't mic the sound hole directly on a guitar as warm as the d15m

  • @larrylynch8113
    @larrylynch8113 8 лет назад

    What would you recommend between this one and a d 28 ?

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  8 лет назад +4

      That's a tough comparison, because new a D-28 model is almost twice the price of the D-15M!
      Go with the D-28 if you're looking for that classic, traditional dreadnought sound -- the spruce top and rosewood back and sides will work for almost any application. Go with the D-15M if you do a lot of solo, singer-songwriter stuff, covers, or you like to play fingerstyle -- it has a very harmonically rich, earthy and unique tone for those types of applications.
