- In 1959 the Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn comes to Belgium to promote her new film ‘The Nun’s Story’ by director Fred Zinnemann. Pros Verbruggen interviews Hepburn, who he keeps calling Mrs. Ferrer, in Dutch, to his own surprise. She charms him with her witty answers and Dutch accent. (Premiere Magazine, October 16, 1959)

Am I the only one who finds it more charming that she could speak Dutch than that she could speak French? I know she spoke around six languages, but I feel like French is expected of her. Dutch is lovely being spoken by her. (And I say this as someone who has studied French for the last ten years.)

I remember watching a RUclips in Swiss German. When I tried to arrange a translation, RUclips kept telling me they thought it was Dutch!

It's the oddest thing about Dutch, you don;t really get it with German, it sounds like, as the writer Bill Bryson said, "a weird version of English". Some things, simple things like "and" and "I have" come through perfectly (apologies to Dutch people, it just sounds like that) and others are so close that you can guess them, and yet others are close enough to German that you can guess them too (I haven't studied German for 30 years but some things come back to me). I think Frisian is even closer as a language, I remember the great comedian Eddie Izzard doing a documentary about the language, and it was considerably closer to English than even Dutch.

I don't speak dutch; I've learned German and Afrikaans in school and thanks to those two, I followed and understood most of what was said.
Likewise my friend, i speak dutch and german and I can understand a whole lot of afrikaans :)
Charlize Theron was interviewed by a dutch reporter years ago... she spoke Afrikaans and he dutch. Both talked perfectly well.

It's interesting how accents and dialects change over time. I find her Dutch remarkably easy to understand! Much easier than the Dutch that is spoken today in both the Netherlands and Flanders. I wonder how that happened.
I don't think accents or dialects have changed, it's just that nowadays the television interviews, programs,... no longer are this formal. Back then it was not done to speak dialect on television. The same applies for english interviews I think, in the '50's, 60's interviews were a lot more formal as well, and sound different than when you watch celebrities being interviewed on talkshows today.
EstrellaVespertina02 correct, now it's more banal, less formal. She speaks a kind of Highborn Dutch. I prefer this formal polite way, they use a lot more formal words and sentence constructions.

I was astonished to stumble on a Turkish news broadcast from 1964, I realized that everyone back then, even villagers from rural areas, used a more formal and polite form of speaking.
Nowadays when you open the news, the language itself with its words is just dumbed down to the core 😫
Because it's always easier to understand people with a lesser command or who doesn't speak it all the time.

Oddly painful to watch, as a Dutchman. I didn't know, or didn't care. Hits hard to hear her in Dutch suddenly, perhaps as I know the nuances of the language better.

Audrey: Here in Brussels.
Pros: You speak Dutch very well with a tad Dutch accent, why is that ?
Audrey: My mother was a Dutch and I have lived in Holland during the war, 8 years long have I been there
Pros: 8 years! And then you come back to Belgium ?
Audrey: No, I'm still been there few times .... but I happy to be here today.
Pros 0.40: You are a film career started, have you play!.
Do you have a training for certification?
Audrey: I started as a Ballet student in Holland and after that, I went to London as a Ballet student, that was in 1948. And gradually, came from the one the other ...I have played smaller roles in the film. And then also the opportunity to play Gigi in the theater in New York. And when that same year I also have a test done for Roman Holliday (1952). ............... a good year for me (laughs well)
Pros 1.25: When those tests were done was the star of the Roman Holliday not yet referred to? There are several actresses who have been offered for the movie! Or was that role really only aimed at you?
Audrey: No, that was not meant for me, no.
Pros 1.42: You have worked in London, in New York, danced in Hollywood! How is that better than expected, how is that? Or is it as you read in the newspapers, how can you say that in a few words?
Audrey: No, in the daily newspapers become always more beautiful suggested either the opposite!............ I have to say that I very much love to work there, I have lots of friends and ... as you well know, the film industry in Hollywood for a long time and there is a very high provisional level! (ask, I don't know if I got that right say)
Pros 2.34: And there is a good spirit among the actors!
Audrey: O, Yes, there is a very serious spirit, it is a pity that this is not more often reads! The people are very early in the studio with hundreds and they all stand ready to very seriously to work all day long to be, there's a very serious atmosphere!

And with the story of "Sabrina" I come from Paris and with "Funny Face" I go to Paris .... and thats often been such a thing, it has brought me good luck.

Audrey: No (Laughs)

Do you like musical movies?
Audrey: Yes, very much, because it is wonderful to work with music with everything around you what one actually does.
Pros 4.26: And the reason you are now actually here is The movie "The Nun's Story", which is in part turned in Belgium and in the Belgian Congo!
Belgium is obviously not strange for you. But how did it go in the Belgian Congo? Do you have difficulties encountered, issue of temperature, atmosphere?
Audrey 4.47: Not at all.............(funny) I would love to be interesting and oh, it's so hot and I passed out.......... but it was so not, it was very warm, that's been nice to be able to say (laughs)…. but it was very nice, I would love to want to go back! My husband knew it yet and we want to even go back together .... I loved it!
Pros 5.10: And the role in the film, how is that bad for you?
Audrey: It's a very difficult role, and I worked hard (like everyone else) and we have done our best and I hope the public will experience this ... and it was a serious issue and I hope we have done justice to!
Pros 5.39: And, one last question, a classic question during an interview, what are the plans?
Audrey: At the moment, very little for me! My husband is going to direct another movie and tomorrow morning we go to Los Angèles and he is going to work and I do (laughs), the household as other women do!.

Very charming person! Even without the subtitles, Dutch uses more vowels than we do - and pronounce their 'Gs' like 'Hs,' I could make out what Audrey and the interviewer were saying pretty well... I wish I could see her perform as "Ondine" and I was glad that she said complimentary things about working in the Congo --- in spite of all the horrific things the Belgians had done in that African country (See Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS, et al)

Her sentences are constructed using English grammar and her choice of words is poor.
E.g: someone saying “studenten” instead of “leerlingen”.

If grace count be measured, she breaks the scale. It's one thing to express it in the (from a Dutch perspective) simple language, but she just plays the Dutch language like a soloist the violin. Perhaps not lyrically, but for sure intonally.
It sounds like Dutch is her first language. In English she has a slight Dutch accent.
Grew up in Belgium and spent the War in the Netherlands, hiding under the name 'Edda van Heemstra' so her native-level Dutch is understandable.

Why is she talking about "Holland" and not "Nederland"... was that the terminology back then?
Most of the time people use 'The Netherlands' and 'Holland' interchangeably. I think it goes back to the 1700's when the Netherlands were important sea merchants and a lot of countries traded with them. These merchants were almost always from the provinces North or South-Holland. Dutch people like me though, who are not from the provinces North or South Holland, don't like it when people call the Netherlands 'Holland', since it excludes most of the country :)
@@verawa8992 het boeit echt bijna niemand hier wat als je Holland of the Netherlands zegt. Misschien 10% vindt het vervelend de rest kan er wel mee leven.

She was a member of the Dutch underground during world war 2 and helped smuggle downed allied pilots and soldiers back to safety. Why is it surprising she can speak Dutch?
