I will never comprehend why so many movies depict gladiators as engaged in lethal combat. In reality, gladiators were a costly investment and fatalities were extremely rare, usually resulting from accidents.

Because nobody wants to watch people fight then stop because it's expensive to buy a new gladiator. That's a boring premise for a movie. We both know you only typed this comment hoping nobody would know you got this from college humor.

It sounds plausible except for the fact you are talking out of your arse and making it sound like pro wrestling.
1.Trying to stab or cut someone with a sword or spear while they do the same to you is what I would call"lethal combat"
2.Deaths in gladiatorial games were not "extremely rare" and I have no idea how you could characterise those deaths as "accidents"
3.Some gladiators cost a lot of money and made a lot of money a lot but many were just warm bodies used to cater to the Romans death fetish.
4.If anything Hollywood down plays just how brutal and bloody gladitorial games could be.

While this movie is entirely fictional, Surprisingly enough Bodicia, or better known as Boadicea was a real woman, or was Based on her Real-Life Counterpart, who was a significant Historical figure in Ancient British history from almost 2000 years ago, and she wasn’t a Priestess, she was a Queen.
The Romans Ousted her and her Husband from the Ancient Iceni throne, and Conquered her Kingdom (Her kingdom was originally located in the British isles where Wales is Today) and, and captured and Enslaved both her and her Two Daughters.
After being forced to watch her daughters get continuously Assaulted by Roman soldiers while in captivity, she Escaped, freed them, went back to her homeland and lead her people on an Uprising as a General.
the Uprising Ultimately failed and she was Killed in the Battle of Watling Street circa 60 AD, but both the Romans and history remembers her valiant role as one of the most noteworthy female military leaders, and she was given an Hero’s Burial by the Romans.
Also the British navy had a line of ships that were named in her honor, most recent one was a B-Class Destroyer from WW2.

Also she tortured and murdered Roman women in garish fashion, having their breasts torn and sewn to their mouth.
Also the story about lavish burial is false and was written by Dio.

      1. The Iceni were located on the east coast where Norfolk is today.
      2. The Romans didn't give her a burial. In fact, she escaped on a chariot with her life leaving her daughters and her army to be slaughtered. No one really knows what happened to her after that. Some say she drank poison after the battle.
      2. She and her husband weren't ousted.
Her husband was a puppet king who was placed on the throne by the Romans, after removing the real king, and the Iceni became a client-kingdom of Rome.
She and her husband also became Roman citizens, and they were now subject to Roman Law. Her husband didn't have any sons, and he knew that by Roman Law, Rome would inherit his property...as he is now a Roman citizen. All Romans were subject to this law. Also, in Roman law, females couldn't inherit. But he wrote a will leaving half his property to Rome and half to his wife and daughters. The will wasn't legal, by Roman law, because females couldn't inherit...and her husband had chosen to become a Roman Citizen to whom Roman law applied. But, this wasn't why all this happened.
Her husband made a ton of debt with a private guy called Seneca. Then her husband died and left that will. Seneca realized he was about to lose his repaiment because Rome would inherit everything and he'd be left with nothing.
Boudica refused to pay her husband's debts. Seneca hired goons to collect the debt. The local governor sanctioned all this and gave some soldiers as well. (Seneca, though a private individual, was a powerful man).
In Rome, when two powerful Roman individuals fueded properly with each other, things got very extreme. Typically, the losing side's women would be brutally assaulted...among other brutal things. It came with the territory of being a high status Roman.
Boudica and her daughters were Roman citizens. Seneca treated them like he did all other powerful Roman citizens when he got to that point.
Boudicca's army of around 200 000 lost at the Battle of Wattling Street against 10 000 Roman soldiers. 80 000 died.
It was Rome's greatest victory in their 1000 year history. It was the worst defeat anyone had ever had against Rome.
She lost, mostly due to not being militarily competent.
She mixed in untrained inexperiend individuals with her warriors. These individuals quickly lost heart and the situation devolved into a mass panic. Fear is an infectious thing, it spread like fire.
Boudica also arranged her wagons in a semi circle around the battle field. To "trap" the Romans (even though they were already trapped by her army). These wagon ended up trapping her own army when it was consumed by mass panic.
The now mob of Iceni trampled each other to death trying to escape over the wagons. While the Romans were cutting down frantically panicking men, women, children, dogs and oxen from behind.
Before the battle started, the Romans were convinced they were going to all die...and had resigned themselves to that fate and decided to go out fighting in order to allow the massive number of civilians that were with them, to escape.
Similar to what Leonidas at Thermopylae tried to do. Pausanias chose a choke point to funnel the Iceni...and he expected to die like those 300 Spartans.
Even the least competent commander of any other pitched battle in history would have won this battle.

Spartan women had the right to own and inherit property who could have sex relations with other women even though she had a husband. Spartan men were mostly poor and were trained to be professional soldiers as kids. Women had the wealth and power because of their husbands low life expectancy as soldiers the reason why women had other women as sex partners as back ups. What a paradise.

As if _one_ slave would be sold by the Romans for 40 pieces, let alone *4* - you'd only get prices that low in a time of massive glut, like post-Gallic Wars (where there were hundreds of thousands, to _millions_ taken)- not some minor raid, & there were **always** premiums on women & the skilled.
