MORE than a half-century has passed passed since this album's release. There was hard and heavy rock BEFORE this, (Hendrix, Led Zep, etc.), but these guys are arguably the first actual "Heavy Metal". Bands like Tool were greatly inspired by Sabbath, and they will tell you that. I'm in my 60's, and I still LOVE this...

Black Sabbath inspired me to learn guitar but I think a lot of the attraction was the rhythms . Drums seemed too hard / loud (where do you practice). Anyway now I produce EDM music so do the whole thing myself. But Sabbath definitely kicked it all off for me

"You introduced me to my mind
And left me wanting you and your kind"- This is a love song to WEED, bro...NO other band sounded like this at the time. True pioneers. That is the GREAT Bill Ward on drums- AND OZZY at his best....

Well it’s one of the most iconic bands in history. They are the forefathers of heavy-metal. Ozzy Osbourne the icon singing. Bill Ward rates in the top tier of drummers of all time. Tony Iommi was the rift God on guitar. And geezer Butler on that deep funky baseline. There was hardly anybody doing it like this back in the 60s and 70s. Deep purple and a couple other bands but this was as hard as it got and it’s sweetleaf bro it’s about weed! The band is heavily based in blues and jazz. One of the most popular bands in the world.

War Pigs live in Paris will blow you away. Bill Ward absolutely destroys his drum kit during this. Not literally - it did survive, but needed a few days in ICU to recover!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT, MUGS!!!

  • @MikeGuerr

Garage Band is definitely an appropriate reaction. The first 2 Black Sabbath albums were each recorded in about 2 days, and the songs were recorded “live” in the studio with some overdubs added. Sweet Leaf is from their 3rd album (Master Of Reality) which was recorded in 2 weeks. They felt that they had spent too much time recording this album. They preferred to just go in and play the songs, and then go back out on the road. I think this give the music on their first few albums that “garage band” feel.
Anyway, this album is the first where the guitar and bass were tuned down 1 1/2 steps on some of the songs ("Children of the Grave", "Lord of This World", and "Into the Void"), giving the music a “heavier” feel and making this a landmark album.

The drums sound live because they are. Back then a recording studio ran on tape and microphones, no computers, only analog circuitry. Each tape became a track that would get merged into the final print, but there was a hard limit on how many tracks could be on one reel of tape. So, micing up a drum kit the way we do now would take up every track available in the 60s, so the rest of the instruments couldn't record at all.

Straight people 55 years ago would be slang for uptight, straight laced, square. I was born in the late 70's. So even coming of age in the 90's, I would refer to my parents as straight laced.
The song begins with a dude coughing.
No Sabbath, no Tool. They're pretty much the root of heavy. There were others but no one did it better. Sweetleaf isn't necessarily the best example but it's the truth.

Black Sabbath started in high school.. in that time there was the first of scary movies.. Ozzy said Lets try to make scary music! This led to deep chord progressions, and sweet leaf shows their flavour the least...

It's inarguably the origin of metal ❤

Sabbath, formed in late 1960's. with subject matter almost exclusively centered around mental illness/drug addiction, nuclear holocaust and demonic possession, was a direct affront to the popular hippie, peace and love music of that era. In my opinion it was a more honest, artistic reflection of reality.

It's all about context. This was written 20 years before TOOL's first EP. At the time the lyrics were shockingly blunt and obvious. But it's completely understandable that you'd miss it in the current world's context.
And of course the vocals here are the legend himself, Ozzy Osborne.
TOOL is Pink Floyd for the new millennium.

Black Sabbath created heavy metal unintentionally and also a couple of sub genres or offshoots of heavy metal like doom metal (slow, heavy, percussive lyrics involving religion and the occult) and with this song stoner metal which is pretty self explanatory lol.

This is from a different time bro. Compared to Tool it is so unsophisticated, but at the time, this was rebellious and new and different too. Sabbath were the godfathers of what made Tool possible. You've been spoiled by having Tool as a reference point compared to rock and metal of the '70s and it will be hard for you to appreciate this older material unless you dedicate a lot of time to it. What Tool do has contributed to a host of great metal that came after them (but Tool remain a law unto themselves, there's nothing else like them apart from some poor and obvious copycats). As genre though, modern Metal is very diverse and underappreciated by folks outside of its curve. I'm 60 and followed it all and I'm a fan of all eras. I suggest you stick with Tool for now, unless your patreons are screaming for something else. It'll all add to your musical (and metal) induction.
