This album inspired so many genres of metal. My absolute favourite. That heavy sound!!

Finally, Sabbath MOR...Woo Hoo ! SL for me is heavy, earthy, funky, and just slow groovy...and yes, they were ALL on 420 when they recorded this...love Tony Iommi's fat, fuzzy, overdriven tone throughout this LP...great, fun reaction as usual from U both 👍🔥🔥🔥🌋🌋🌋

This album had an even heavier sound and tone than the 2 great albums that came before, we considered it an instant classic on the first day UT was released, we listened to it after high school and were utterly blown away. More classics to come. Their first 6 albums are solid gold and made them a lock when eligible for the RR HoF, though it took way too long to get them in, they should have been in right after Floyd and Zeppelin. They created whole genres of heavy music on this record. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎶

I can clearly remember when this album was released. I was already a sweet leaf lover, this just reinforced my love for getting high. Sabbath was a very innovative band, influential to so many.

I still remember one of the Cheech and Chong skits where Tommy says something about listening to Black Sabbath at 78rpm and seeing God. Right around this albums release.

You guys probably weren't even born when this album came out...:)...We had such great music in the 70's I love Sab more now than I did back then...I don't know how people only listen to one song though...I play one Sab song I have to play three albums at least...I'll tell you, as a musician for half a century; NO TWO SABBATH SONG ARE ALIKE IN ANY WAY except Ozzy's voice...They're brilliant writers.

One of the best albums of all Times! The original of Doom Metal! NOBODY did this before this album, and this album STILL holds up among all the peers of today.
The contrast between the low-pitched chuggy riffs and Ozzy's high pitched vocals are so PERFECT!
I love how they stole the font of Beatles Rubber Soul - which was The Beatles weed album (although Help! was very stoned already lol) but had a black and purple color scheme.

consider, they are a trio with a singer. I believe Tony(guitar) plays light gauge strings, leaving Geezer(bass) to be heavier and more busier. wonder if it inspired Geddy Lee in some style? ❤ guys

Great to see you both again. Also great to see the free poster from the album in the background! I haven’t seen it since mine disappeared in about 1973, although I suspect it ended up on a bedroom wall in a student apartment in Manchester. Think Tony started detaining his guitars during this album so it’s possibly the origin of the definitive heavy metal sound. You’ll hear it more obviously on “ Into The Void “. Best wishes from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, as always.

I think Geezer downtuned his bass as well. We just listened to Children of the Grave (vid coming soon, of course), which had that heavy sound as well.

Tony Iommi tuned his guitar down to make it easy to play with his bad fingers. Geezer Butter tuned his bass down to match and they created a sound.

This is a very simple concept album, lyrically. Ya sit down, get high and start thinking.
About God, the planet, your life, the future. A very carefully crafted concept that's laid out perfectly in the running order of the album.

Great reaction!! Made my Friday afternoon. This is probably my favourite Sabbath album! I just love all the riffs, themes & sounds they were creating! Honestly, you could put on any of the first 6 albums with Ozzy and I'm a happy guy!
I don't think it was tongue in cheek, nor satirical...these were God fearing dudes! Geezer Butler did dabble in Satanism in earlier days, but I think it was more of a curiosity than a belief. Their image, as dark and gloomy as they portrayed, was always shown with every member wearing crosses (and not upside down ones).
Really look at their catalogue, and you won't find any songs 'praising' Satan.
Can't wait until you check out Children Of The Grave, and the real surprise on this album, Solitude!
    Cheers

Tony Iommi, music, Geezer Butler lyics. The greatest songwriting team in history. After Forever was not tongue in cheek. I don't know why you would possibly think that. The lyrics were the result of Butler's thinking about the northern Ireland religious violence. This was the most influential record of all time. It was ridiculous to give this album an honorable mention. It is #1 from 1971.

After Forever - I wonder why nobody ever brought up this song when evangelists were condemning Black Sabbath as satanic?
