When I went to Basic, several guys brought cologne. The Drill Sergeants marched them around the common area and had them spray it until it was all gone. "Make this place smell good" they said. Holding up the rear was a guy who brought his girlfriend's panties. They made him wear them on his head. I went to Ft. Jackson in '99. I don't think they can get away with some of this stuff now-a-days.

Male or female, regardless of where you are from or your MOS, packing for basic comes down to three words...LESS IS MORE. The clothes on your back, your toiletries, your orders, writing supplies, stamps, and no more than $50 should be enough. Remember: you have to carry what you bring. Keep it simple. If you bring a phone, make sure that it is fully charged. You will not get to use it much during basic. About shaving, you are NOT allowed to use electric shavers, straight razors, or shaving powder.
Oh yeah - you may come across a difficult moment that might have you considering praying. Don't fight the urge. A little faith goes a long way. Good fortune to you.

    Great video chris.
Here’s a tip: if you use a combo lock, write your combination code somewhere hidden like under your patrol cap or running shoes. It’s because a lot of people will forget their code when they spend a few days out at a FTX.
I think you can bring a bible but I recommend leaving your personal bible at home cause you can get a free bible at the church at basic.
My battle buddy at basic managed to sneak his PDA in and emailed his wife at night. But at AIT, we had a solider bring an Xbox, PlayStation, and a 32 inch tv!

@@Robert-tf3ch best to ask a recruiter about this one. Due to the current situation of covid, they may modify the packing list and churches on base may not be giving out physical bibles. My biggest regret when I went to Basic was the number of clothes I brought. Granted, it was three shirts and two pairs of jeans, and yet it was enough to make me regret the decision. You can - and might - just want to go in with the clothes on your back. The only thing I could recommend to bring with you is a watch, phone, and charger along with your paperwork. Everything else is provided for you.

,,@@Blinx777 I just finished a selection process, so I might give out some incomplete information. But, hygiene items will never steer you wrong. Stay away from the cough drops; the notebook can only serve to take notes in a classroom while you struggle to stay awake. Underwear will be your friend if the green weenies chafe you while out in the field. Clothes for when you get there and when you get back. Other than those pointers - remember - have fun, and it will be a small part of a much larger endeavor in your career. You might note that enjoy the journey. But, understand that everyone takes their first step towards something more significant; it is your chance to learn to move forward to something new. As always, YMMV. Your Mileage May Vary,

Going through reception over two years ago after going through what we need and don't need, this female had a religious cross necklace. However, upon the drill sergeants' discovery because of how big (cross was about palm-sized and was thick and detailed), there was a small lever that unveiled a knife. They yelled at her and to her defense, it was a family heirloom, but was confiscated anyway.
Also, perhaps it's different at installation or units, when I was a Leonard Wood, reading material was allowed, but it couldn't be thick and large.

I was set to go to basic training, but my recruiter fked everything up. She had to be the worst recruiter. I took 3 years of ROTC in high school in preparation for a career in the military. I graduated at 17 from high school because my birthday is in July. Her 1st fk up, she sends me to meps in June. I can't be processed because I'm still 17 and had no parental signature. 2nd fk up she sends me back after I turn 18, only to be told at meps there isn't a slot available. 3rd fk up she sends me back to meps ready to go to boot camp, while at meps
I'm told my slot had be assigned to someone else. After setting at meps almost all day, I get up and walk out, get on a bus and come back home. She calls again and says, you are really headed to boot camp this time. I told her to kick rocks that I was no longer interested. I was trying to get into the infantry, to follow in my dad's foot steps. Looking back, I should have tried to go into the Marines. 1989 was a different time and Desert Storm would be for a few more years, so I guess the Army didn't care about getting every recruit available.

Your packet from MEPS should have all your important documents in it. All you need is that, your wallet, and your cellphone. i wouldnt bring anything else. One or two changes of clothes max. All your stuff, including your phone will be locked up from day one until you graduate, unless youre lucky and you get to use those phones once you get into the second or third phase. They will give you an Eagle Cash Card, with $300-ish cash advance from your first paycheck and you will be required to buy several items, underwear, socks, hygiene supplies, stamps, paper, all that. You cant use cash and you cant use your debit card. This was my experience in '11 at Fort Sill

...Arrived Marine Corps Boot Camp (San Diego) June 12, 1968... Obviously we had no cell phones... but we did have combination locks... Issued to us (charged against our pay, recruit BX...) Small one went on footlocker...larger bicycle lock went through safety on our M14s and fastened to holes in our racks. (By the end of Vietnam war had to be kept in armory...) Big-time warning re combination locks... You've got three minutes to grab something and be outside...and you keep fumbling with combination... Recruits often got tempted to lock, then do combination, just require a pull to open... How to get your wallet stolen out of your footlocker...
    .
...Worse... at the range we got a new-broom series officer... While D.I.'s had us at mess hall, he went through our platoon barracks and jerked every combination lock on rifles (at range fastened to rifle racks...) Half the locks opened and he had offending rifles removed to his office... When we got back, not only did the recruits get hit with this ghastly scenario...but our D.I.s as well...which of course doubled hell for idiots involved... We were ordered to get our rifles and fall in...in the normal spot... If our rifle not in the racks...fall in a separate formation... (My lock was pre-set...but Lt. must have jerked at wrong angle or something because, when I went to get my rifle, it was still there (and came off with slight pull...God was merciful to me that day...) -YP-

My recommendation is to just take what your recruiter tells you. You will have to lug every thing you take until you unpack when you get off the bus. Plus, when you get out of basic, you will not only have your personal baggage you brought with you to basic, but you will have a military duffle bag filled with your basic military issue clothing. Now you have two bags to carry. There was a few people when I went to Basic, that after basic, they bought a bunch of clothes and ghetto blasters at the p.x. It was comical watching them carry three and four bags at the airport. Wait until you gat through with your basic and AIT before you start accumulating stuff.
