I made a trip to Canterbury in the late seventies ,an experience i will never forget. The town is a place that along with York and STRATFORD impressed me si much. The cathedral is a magnificent place testifying the christian heritage of the island. Greetings from ITALY
Greetings back to you, Luciana!
Stunning beautiful England... have to go there some day 💕✨
We hope you do!
I would love to see a Cathedral tour, please.
Yours isn't the only request, Karen. It'll definitely be on our list :)
I love Canterbury i remember going there with school and visting the Canterbury tales it scared me 🙈
Hopefully our video was less frightening..!
I was able to visit Canterbury in May and loved it. But I learned so much more from your tour! Thank you so much!
Glad we could bring you something new, Deborah :)
Love your enthusiasm. Great knowledge. Thank you for showing off my home city so beautifully and eloquently.
Our pleasure, John. We are so glad you feel we did it justice :)
I was born & raised in Michigan. I’m a 52yr old man & I’ve always been curious about everything and I have a thirst for knowledge, so I love the different museums you visit! Unfortunately I’m sure I’ll never visit England but your videos take me there! Thank you!! If you’re ever in Michigan let me know 🤙🏼
So glad you enjoyed this, Matthew!
My daughter went to Kent last year for 2 semesters so I went in April (2024) and stayed there for a few days.
I got to see so many of these places and my daughter was my tour guide. She’s an archeology and history student. So i thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
We are so glad you enjoyed this one!
good tour video ,, very interesting , and i love fudge lol
Me too! 🤤
That was the first time I saw this gal give a tour. She did a fantastic job, and I love the historical information that she gave us. More of that type of tour would be greatly appreciated. I love this channel and I look forward to it every week. Ty
Thank you! I have about 7 or 8 videos on this channel - I guide for Free Tours by Foot, and I also have my own Channel, called The Museum Guide. :)

Happy 113k subs.
I will watch it full by tomorrow morning, because it is past 11 pm here in the Philippines.
Excellent video, thank you so much! ❤ I visited Canterbury 19 years ago, and again this year. Awe-inspiring, so much history!
Glad we could take you back virtually, Eva!
what a great tour with all the history. thank you Jessica ❤️
You're very welcome.
Thank you for the tour! Very informative!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was really fascinating! Thank you for the tour!
Glad you liked this one, Allie!
What a lovely tour with Jessica. I remember studying The Canterbury Tales for senior year in high school, now I finally got a taste of the city
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would love to see a more detailed tour of Canterbury Cathedral. It’s fascinating.
It's a true wonder. Thank you for watching!
Never say never..!
Canterbury seems a magical place plus the fact l seem to have a spiritual attraction to lovely older pubs !
You and me both!
I live only 10 miles from Canterbury, but a worsening disability means I am now housebound and haven’t been there for years. It’s interesting to see the familiar streets, and how a lot of the shops have changed hands: eg, Prêt à Manger used to be Boots. It’s good to see a place I love so much. Thank you.
We are so glad to help you travel there virtually!
@@FreeToursbyFootLondon Thank you.
In the basement of the old Boots is a very old well and residents are allowed to visit it.
Excellent tour. No waffle, just loads of useful information with great visuals. 60fps like Sinead does instead of 30fps would have been even better but still very good
Thanks - I think I have my camera set on 30fps because I normally film inside museums! I am one of those people who genuinely can't see the difference, so this is helpful. :)
@@TheMuseumGuide Sinead does all of her museum tours at 60fps and you've also shot at 60fps before such as your British museum tour. The difference is really noticeable if you're watching on a television rather than a mobile device.
@@ViN-kr3ri thank you! I think I went to 30 on my videos because 60fps causes these weird wavy lines in the national gallery and other art galleries, so after a frantic google I changed over.
But then I just remembered that I didn’t film this one- it was actually a professional! So I’m not sure what happened. But it’s great feedback. :)
A great, very interesting and informative tour Jessica, which makes me certainly intend to pay a visit to Canterbury in the not-too-distant future. What a lovely old town plus the fabulous cathedral. May those streets be forever preserved.
I agree! Thank you for watching.
This will sound dumb but I have to share it anyway. When I was growing up we read the Canterbury Tales in school. I live in New Hampshire in the the United States and we have a town here named Canterbury. For my entire childhood I thought the story was based on the town in our state (stupid childhood thinking, I know). When I learned this was about a place in London I was crushed but of course got over it. Being able to see this video and put a "face" to the actual city the story was based on was fantastic. Thank you so much for this tour. Free Tours By Foot is amazing.
Just FYI Canterbury isn’t in London, it’s in the county of Kent and it’s about an hours drive from London. It’s a beautiful city. I’m very lucky to be local. Hope you get to visit some day,
Haha - what a sweet story! We are glad we were able to show you the real deal :)
Thanks very much for this tour of Canterbury! Do you have a video tour of York?
Not yet - but it is in the works!
Such an interesting video, and so good to have a commentator who pronounces ‘mischievous’ correctly. I’ve visited Canterbury a couple of times and there’s always something new (or usually old!) that’s fascinating.
I think I might actually say it both ways, depending on who I am talking to! 😅 Thank you for watching.
Thank you Jessica!! Canterbury is beautiful. I loved Canterbury Cathedral. I am descend from The Black Prince's brother. The Red Prince John of Gaunt.
We are so glad you enjoyed this one. And thank you for sharing!
Invicta doesn't mean victory. It means unconquered or undefeated, which indeed they were. The Normans did not deafest Kent, rather they reached agreement by treaty. It is why pre Norman traditions, such as gavelkind, persisted in Kent until modern times.
Oh forgot to say, loved the tour. Thanks Jessica.
You're very correct! Thank you for watching. :)
Thank you for an incredible, interesting & informative tour. England is a country rich in history... I love learning more about its past. Thanks again.
So glad you enjoyed it, Susan!
Good job Jessica was there on my way from Calais France Hovercraft and train to London thanks for the memories
My uncle took that hovercraft on his teenaged backpacking trip from Canada! Thanks for watching.
a very interesting video thank you for your great job
So beautiful I would love to walk down old fashioned streets on a dark night in winter.
It gets dark at 4:30 in winter, so you don't have to stay out late! Thank you for watching.
Walking it in Covid times was strange. Got some great photos as no one in the streets. Also went for private pray in Cathedral and it was only me and one volunteer.
You may have noticed on the City's Coat of Arms some black birds with red beaks and legs, these are adult Chuffs, a member of the Crow family that were persecuted to extinction some 200 years ago. Farmers believed that they killed lambs but as a carrion species just fed on the carcasses. They are now flying again over the Kentish Downs as a few breeding pairs from Europe have been released to hopefully repopulate the area.
Fantastic! Thank you so much.
Thank you Jessica!! Lovely tour with very interesting historical information. Will definitely check out your channel!

Great tour! As always Jessica’s tours are always fun and informative. I absolutely want to go to Canterbury now! I’ve taken a private tour with her and she’s very well informed and takes the time to answer any questions you may have.
We are so glad you enjoyed your tour with Jessica and this video! :)
Just a couple of things. Queen Bertha was already Christian when she came to the Kingdom of Kent as a Frankish princess to marry its pagan King, Ethelbert, in 580. She was commanded by Pope Gregory the Great to use her influence on her husband to aid Augustus of Canterbury to restore Christianity in 596 (Christianity had been one of the religions practiced during the Roman occupation). Also Thomas Beckett was not canonised by King Henry II of England. Popes canonise people and he was canonised by Pope Alexander III.
Thank you! Great corrections.

We love it when the locals approve. Thank you! :)
Me too. Learnt loads. From Littlebourne

Very good tour thank you !
I have a different take on 8:10 ,
The skull is to remind the student to always find time to practice dying ( transcendal meditation ) . The mosaic of the 3rd eye next to, is perfectly beautiful.
Im loving these tours , I've never travelled to the capital !
We enjoyed hearing your take on that, Jason! Thanks for watching :)
I'll have to put this on my Becket list.

Best tour of my city just one correction the butter market war memorial does include 2nd war heroes my uncles name Horace Scott is on it killed when his plane was shot down in 1943 but very informative video Rob Scott thank you
Thanks for the extra info, James!
Thanks! If/when I get to 'cross the pond', I'll be contacting you for a right proper personal tour of this incredible town of Canterbury!
We hope to see you soon!
Palace Street is just part of the King's Mile. :-)
Fascinating tour even with those editing goofs! 😊
We are both confused - what are the editing goofs? We can still fix them. :)
@@TheMuseumGuide you gave directions for voice over at one point…and I believe you repeated yourself about the 13th century somewhere when describing a building…it wasn’t to emphasize, it was an error to cut one or the other reference out
@@writechick22 thank you!!!!
The pilgrimage will be done after your inspirational comments about this town, thanks!
What pilgrimage? Religion is dying a cold death thankfully and churches are shutting down because they can't even get 5 people through their door and that's why they are being converted into apartments But do you know 86% of all WARS have started over RELIGION?? And nothing good comes from it..

Great tour, thanks! And have a cuppa on me!
Welcome! We are glad you found us :)
My late sister married her husband from Canterbury. Can’t remember if he was a Man of Kent or a Kentish Man. The middle of Canterbury is actually an island called Burr Island and he was born in a tiny house overlooking the river. I spent my holidays with my sister every year until she passed. Have a lot of family there. All Saints Lane is where he was born in one of the red brick cottages you can see in the video.
We love this - thank you for sharing!
it must be said, you look awesome !!!
Thank you Jessica this was very informative and very interesting love the History!
You're very welcome!
🌟
yea!! I'm laid up in bed and have Jessica on both channels to watch!
Hope you are feeling better soon, Melissa!
You forgot to mention that The High Street is one of three continuous streets running through the centre of Canterbury and that, despite being narrow (by US standards) it used to be the main London to Dover road (the A2). This now bypasses Canterbury completely. There is an RAC road sign near the Pilgrims Hospice pointing to London in one direction and to Dover in the other. Also double decker buses used to pass through the Westgate Towers but no longer (I suspect they got too big). For locals Canterbury is no longer the shopping centre it used to be, all the useful shops being located outside the city and replaced by coffee shops, tatty souvenier shops, closed shops (ie Nasons that you stood next to) and phone repair shops. And it's Bell Harry tower, not Bell Henry Tower.
Thanks for the additional info, Brian!
The main Cathedral tower is known as 'Bell Harry' not Bell Henry.....Nice video, I've lived round the corner of Palace Street all my life so easy to get blasé about the history all around us.
Thanks for the info, Laurie!
👍
Did Cardinal Wolsey help build the Canterbury Cathedral or was it already built before he was alive??
It predates Wolsey, yes :)
Where you walk through the archway into the grounds the mason was annoyed so made a rude carving. My sister and I have never found it!
hello Jessica me and my mum we are going to be in countryside in England in late August and east London England in early September and we are going to be Windsor England
I definitely recommend Canterbury.
I knew that horses died in WWI... But 8 million equine deaths is mind boggling & horrifying.
Journey on brave, loyal, companions. Journey on.
Even more horrific was when the war ended the surviving horses were just shot
@@ViN-kr3ri there are very few who are less humane, than humanity.
Thank you! Informative and excellent. Well done!
Tudor isn't pronounced twoder. It is chewder The sound wasn't synchronised with her lips.
It is indeed pronounced Tudor with a Canadian accent - I would be putting on an fake English accent to say it Chewder, and that would sound bizarre - like Madonna when she married Guy Ritchie. ;)
Please note : "medieval" is pronounced with FOUR syllables.
There was such cruelty back then, that people didn’t seem to concern themselves about.
Her speech wasn't in sequence with her lips moving.😑
Very nice 👍🏻
Using the term “CE” is, to be nice, pandering and disingenuous. Why? Because the demarcation line of “Before the Common Era (BCE)” and “Common Era (CE)” is still the birth of Christ. BCE=BC and CE=AD. Please to using these ridiculous terms, they are insulting to everyone’s intelligence whether or not some people want to admit it.
Also, this was a terrible job of editing, just well beneath this channel’s normal videos. 🤔
These are the preferred academic terms - BC and AD are no longer in use in academic settings.
It will always be , BC & AD for me.
@@Marth281 that’s absolutely fine- no one is forcing you to change. It’s personal preference (unless your university department has a style guide on the matter).
@@TheMuseumGuide
Academia is no longer academia. It is indoctrinamia. They (indoctrinamia) no longer teach; hence, the term “indoctrinamia”. Just because the academicians says you should do something, should you? No, absolutely not. It’s ludicrous terminology out of indoctrinamia that’s got the world so fouled up. Words are no longer words, they are ways to hurt people who don’t think like they want you to think. Indoctrinamia is responsible for cancel culture and ALL other leftist hogwash. You do understand that the people who came up with this garbage are the pot smoking (not that there’s anything wrong with that), bomb throwing, hippy freak, anarchist, radical atheists of the 1960s, or their direct descendants don’t you? You do realize that one of the first things communists MUST do to take over the West is to destroy religion. The people that came up with this crap are ALL communists. So, I guess you’re a communist then.
@@TheMuseumGuide
Hahahahahahaha. Think for yourself madam.
Thanks!
