When is charging complete? Once the front LED light turns off, the battery is fully charged. This can take up to 4 hours if the computer is used and up to 2 hours if a USB wall charger is used
That's the one bit of information everyone seems to leave out of their videos about charging this camera. At least you added a post letting us know. Thanks, mate.
Thank you! I have not used my GoPro in years and I had forgotten how to charge it! It was nice to be able to just play your video and now I am ready to roll! I appreciate your time doing this!
Thank you! I am surprised the go pro set up instructions don't tell you where the charging door/port is, or that it doesn't come with a charging base. So I very much appreciate this video!
Very useful. I found another video that showed how to get started with the Hero 5 Black. It showed how to open the box, remove the camera from the display and the casing, etc. etc. But it skipped over how to open the battery charging compartment and plug in the cord. So this video supplied the missing link.
Great question....Practically speaking, I believe the answer is yes. That said, according to GoPro "Our cameras and Battery BacPacs require USB chargers that output 5V and 1A." This seems a bit contradictory because they sell a charger that has specifications of charging at "5.1V 3A, 5.5V 3A, and 12V 1.67A, and 5.1V 1.5A." (See GoPro Supercharger). So will 5V 2A work. Yes. Why are there inconsistencies in what they recommend and what they actually do and sell? I'm not sure. Hope this helps! :)
O M G I struggled getting the USB door open...because N O N E of the other YTube videos showed any info on opening that tricky door. Not wanting to damage a borowed Hero5, I was reluctant to force anything. Your video was so helpful unlike the others. Many thanks.
Thank you very much for letting us know that we can use any charger plus telling us the specific volts and amp. This is really helpful because I don't have a GoPro charger. Thanks dude.
Hey hey thank you very much for those tips! I have an older go pro that I love, and now that I have an iPhone charger, thanks to your tip, I can now just simply plug the USB cable into my iPhone charger. Ha ha I guess that's just one more of the benefits switching to an iPhone and a MacBook Pro after being a dedicated android phone and PC user for 25 years....thanks again! 👍
This helped so much! I'm glad to know that I can still use the USB cord but I'm still a little confused about the battery. Does the GoPro only work with the battery not in it or is the battery optional? If it's not optional how long until purchasing another one.
Thanks for writing. So glad to hear the video was of some help to you. Concerning your question...I'm not real clear exactly what you're asking. In my experience, the Hero5 only works with the battery in place (even when using external USB power). If that isn't what you were asking, feel free to write back!
Battery life is dependent on many factors. Using a GoPro with some settings enabled will result in half the battery life if those same settings were disabled. It's always a good idea to pick up an extra battery to be sure you have a couple charged and ready when you're out and about. You can pick one up at GoPro.com for $20: shop.gopro.com/accessories-2/rechargeable-battery-hero5-black/AABAT-001.html
Hello just wanted to say I was having a brain fart and couldnt remember how to charge the damn go pro so I looked on here and found your video which was short and brief and right to the point I needed! Thanks Mate plus I subscribed!!😁
Good job, thanks for the video. I would just like to add, based on intel from GoPro's website, 5volt-2Amp is actually recommended, 5volt-1Amp is the minimum, so Samsung wall chargers are also compatible. (Ironically, the hero 5 batteries are also made by Samsung.)
Thank you so much for this. You think at such an expensive item would come with a charger!! I was really upset about it. Are you supposed to see a red light in front of the camera if it's charging?
thank you for this video it does help a lot. But i have a quick question, if i lost the usb cable that came with the hero 5 can i use just regular usb cable for charging? thanks😊
Great question. Basically you need a cable with USB-C on one end and standard USB on the other. You can also find a replacement like this on Amazon: amzn.to/2m9vfth.
I need some help PLEASE! I don’t know why but my go pro isn’t charging and i am pretty sure i followed all of your steps correctly, please help me and i would be so happy
Once the front LED turns off, the battery is fully charged. This can take up to 4 hours if the computer is used and up to 2 hours if a USB wall charger is used
Thank you for the video, the input on the camera for the USB-cable is really not that easy to find. The manual that came with my camera didn't have those instructions, and - true - the opening of the side is pretty tight
While charging the gopro, can I also plug the mini/micro hdmi adapter onto the second port to connect the other devices like TV "live feeds" at the same time? Any side effects?
How to Charge the Camera Battery; according to GOPRO website. USB wall charger that outputs 5V and 1A (5V 2A recommended for HERO6 Black, Fusion, HERO5 Black and HERO5 Session). And i saw the other is 1.5A according to Gopro guy in Gopro forum. Correcting if iam wrong
In the Hero 5 Black instruction manual it says "using a wall charger other than a GoPro wall charger can damage the GoPro camera battery and could result in fire or leakage".... are you sure this is okay?
GoPro recommend turning off Connections Bluetooth and WiFi plus shutting down the camera to charge the battery so is it really ok to be using a charging at the same time
I believe so...though it may take a bit longer to charge with these features on. I believe this recommendation is to speed up the charging process (bluetooth and wifi off = faster charging).
hi can u help me? i turn my gopro off when i charge it. when it's fully charge i plug it out and there's a red light. i cant turn it on no matter what. i then have to remove the battery and insert it back before i can power up my gopro 6 again. should i leave the gopro on or off when i charge it?
When I first plugged my Hero6 into my Surface Pro the charging lights lit up. I then unplugged it and plugged it into a wall charger, now the chargin* lights don’t come on and the device is getting really hot. All of this happened within 15 minutes of me charging it the first time. Is this a defective product?
I just got this camera today and I notice that when I plug the mini USB into it, it is somewhat loose - meaning there is play and the plug moves around. It still works, but I'm concerned whether this is normal or not. I've read online about the fragility of the plug and wonder if it's broken or about to be.
Hmm...I'm sorry to hear that. My plug seemed to be a pretty snug fit. You can reach GoPro customer service at 1 (855) 635-3578. Hopefully they can address your concerns. Best wishes!
In my experience, they do often get quite warm while charging. The HDMI outport is for playback on TVs, etc. (connect your GoPro directly to a TV with an HDMI port).
A matter of a several hours. What you are describing is not normal (if red light stays on it's still charging). If I experienced this I would probably unplug and turn on and check the battery indicator. It should have been full long ago.
I have same question, can I leave cord plugged in to extend videos length..what I found in charging instructions was a clue..turn off..plug in... IF no charging light and only charging bars on front screen, then you may still have it turned on, which will slow down the charging because it's using battery to operate..so the indirect answer is YES you can! If you're already doing this with success, please respond here as I'm still considering my initial purchase and this is a factor in my choice, ...thanks

Ik I’m late, but when you plug it into a wall, can you use any cable to charge it?
Thats was all the doubt. Cheers tnx
can it use fast charger? mine is 33watt fast charger
Thank you! I have not used my GoPro in years and I had forgotten how to charge it! It was nice to be able to just play your video and now I am ready to roll! I appreciate your time doing this!
Sometimes I wonder how these videos have 300k+ views, then I realise I'm here and found it very useful. Thank you !
Thank you! I am surprised the go pro set up instructions don't tell you where the charging door/port is, or that it doesn't come with a charging base. So I very much appreciate this video!

THANKS A BUNCH. With all the accessories you need to get for go pro, this video/tip is really very helpful. You saved me some money.
Simple and to the point! Great Video!
Hey, thanks very much. I'm a beginner and just learning the ropes. I appreciate the feedback!
can i use 5v-2a instead pf 5v-1a

can i use 5v - 4A?
does it charge while recording ?

Your video was so helpful unlike the others.
Many thanks.
Thank you from a go pro hero 5 novice! Really helpful video just need to find proper attachments to use on holiday now 😁
Happy you found the information helpful. Best wishes with your new camera!
ahh thank you so much! helped a lot! didn't have to sit through a 15 minute video just to figure out how to open the charge spot!
Glad to be of service! Enjoy your new GoPro!
THANK YOU SO MUCH I haven’t used mine in years and completely forgot how to charge it so thank you so much for this
thank you!!!!! that stupid side door doesn't wanna budge and i thought my camera was busted straight out tha box. watching you open it helped.
Thank you very much for letting us know that we can use any charger plus telling us the specific volts and amp. This is really helpful because I don't have a GoPro charger. Thanks dude.
Thanks for making your instructional video so concise and to the point.

HowTos & Reviews yeah that was what I was asking so how often do u have to replace the battery

HowTos & Reviews oh so does the battery come with a charger ? Also can you charge it forever or do you eventually have to throw it away
I was waiting for to find out if we could charge it with our regular phone charger, and yes we can. Thanks for the video. You saved me $60 buddy. :D
Glad to be of some help. Best wishes and enjoy your new gopro!

Hello just wanted to say I was having a brain fart and couldnt remember how to charge the damn go pro so I looked on here and found your video which was short and brief and right to the point I needed! Thanks Mate plus I subscribed!!😁
i forgot i had a gopro hero 5 and unfortunately also forgot how to charge it. thanks for the video!
Nice video. 99% of my videos have been done with my Hero 4 Black. I'm considering a Hero 5. I subscribed and liked!
Thanks. I appreciate the feedback!
Good job, thanks for the video.

Glad to be of service!
true
thank you for this video it does help a lot.
Thank you. Nice tip about the charger adapters at 5v/1a (i.e. iPhone). My Garmin Forerunner watch adapter can be used as well, but not my Samsung 8+.
Thank you! Going to use it for the first time this afternoon on my first flying lesson!!!!
thanks for the instructions. I had no idea of how to open my son's gopro that I borrowed. all good. cheers
THIS MADE IT SO MUCH EASIER THANKS
Hi this was very helpful.. could not find this info in the directions or online.
I need some help PLEASE! I don’t know why but my go pro isn’t charging and i am pretty sure i followed all of your steps correctly, please help me and i would be so happy
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed! Answered all my questions! You are amazing :)
Could you include information on "When the GOPRO is Done Charging" That was the info I was looking for.
Once the front LED turns off, the battery is fully charged. This can take up to 4 hours if the computer is used and up to 2 hours if a USB wall charger is used
Kool....thank you very much. Your knowledge is a huge help.
Thank you so much to your Helpfull Video.. can i ask a question? Output 5.0 V == 2.0 A?
Thank you very much for the wonderful tip. I had forgotten what I had to do after my cam was 1 year not here. :)
Thank you for the video, the input on the camera for the USB-cable is really not that easy to find. The manual that came with my camera didn't have those instructions, and - true - the opening of the side is pretty tight
Can a GoPro record normally while it's powered the USB power outlet in airplane cockpit?
While charging the gopro, can I also plug the mini/micro hdmi adapter onto the second port to connect the other devices like TV "live feeds" at the same time? Any side effects?
Thanks I dont have a computer so the wall chargers help SOOOOOOOO much....
thanks so much for the info! it was very helpful for me getting my son's go pro up and running.
Hello ! How much time to charge the battery at the first time after bought ? Why it lose the red point after charging 2 hours?
When can I charge my batteries? Should I run them completely down or can I charge them at any level.
Is there any way to use this gopro with sound? While still being waterproof?
Can you use that same cable for transferring videos to a desktop? Tnx
Does it work for the newer Gopro 6? I am thinking of the Gopro 6 for a prolonged footage shoot 6-7 hours at a sitting.
What if the charging output says 5V, 3A max?? Does it ruin the go pro battery in any way? Or is it okay to use?
I can’t seem to find my charging cable. Do you know a place where I could buy one?
Best Buy!!
Will it charge while hooked up to a computer USB port?
It sure will. It takes around 2 hours using a USB wall charger or about 4 hours if a computer USB port is used.
If all three red status lights are on, is that okay? Just unboxed the GoPro Hero 5 Black.
The power lid sticks because it is water proof and has to have some resistance with the rubber underneath.
Good information for the beginners...
In the Hero 5 Black instruction manual it says "using a wall charger other than a GoPro wall charger can damage the GoPro camera battery and could result in fire or leakage".... are you sure this is okay?
Can a GoPro be powered the USB power outlet in airplane cockpit?

hi can u help me? i turn my gopro off when i charge it. when it's fully charge i plug it out and there's a red light. i cant turn it on no matter what. i then have to remove the battery and insert it back before i can power up my gopro 6 again. should i leave the gopro on or off when i charge it?
My question is, should it take all day to charge?
When I first plugged my Hero6 into my Surface Pro the charging lights lit up. I then unplugged it and plugged it into a wall charger, now the chargin* lights don’t come on and the device is getting really hot. All of this happened within 15 minutes of me charging it the first time. Is this a defective product?

How do you know when its fully charged

What is the HDMI outport for?
And is it normal for the battery to get so hot while charging it?
In my experience, they do often get quite warm while charging. The HDMI outport is for playback on TVs, etc. (connect your GoPro directly to a TV with an HDMI port).
I actually started using my Apple computers charger and it's cool now... doesn't get hot anymore.
Very very helpful thank you!!
Sir that charger is type C?
Can fit for gopro hero 5 tha charger of my android type c?
HI . My power cable connects in both rotation positions to the power socket of the Gopro! is that right ?!
Just what I needed to know. Thanks!

Good video. GoPro don’t have the time and money to include some tips in the box
How long does it take to charge it for the first time? It has been for more than a day and it is not full yet.
A matter of a several hours. What you are describing is not normal (if red light stays on it's still charging). If I experienced this I would probably unplug and turn on and check the battery indicator. It should have been full long ago.

Can I charge my go pro with the frame installed?
Great vid

The light will actually turn off when the charging is complete. :)

There's an idea. Glad you found a solution, and a creative one at that!

Can you charge the camera from a power pack while using to video.
