My favorite Pokémon is and always has been Mewtwo. One of my favorite parts about him in Pokémon the First Movie was his theme. It was simple and somehow sad, eerie and imposing all at the same time. I was also glad when this theme returned in Mewtwo Returns.
This is a suite combining various tracks from the American soundtrack to Mewtwo Strikes Back, highlighting Mewtwo's theme. Enjoy.

I had a friend once, long ago, who LOVED Mewtwo. He was her favorite Pokemon bar none. We don't talk anymore, but whenever I see Mewtwo, I think of her and hope she's doing alright.

@@GahmConrad Sometimes things don't need to go sour. Sometimes friends just drift apart. It's an awful feeling because you might try to stay connected, but when they don't back to you, for whatever reason, you stop trying more and more to reach out and stay connected.

I met Jay Goede who voiced Mewtwo in the original film at a comic con, he's a great guy who likes talking about Mewtwo and of how significant the character is. I got him to sign an autograph with the words he says "The reign of Mewtwo will soon begin!"
So that’s who voiced him in the first movie. He must’ve been using a pseudonym.

Mewtwo was the strongest.. but then came Arceus.. but then Mewtwo got a powerup.. but then came the primal form Kyogre and Groudon, which were a match for Mewtwo.. but Rayquaza needed to be more powerful than Kyogre and Groudon, so then came Mega Rayquaza.. and its now banned from the banned smogon league :'D i feel like Mewtwo and Arceus should be boosted to be a match for Rayquaza.. Mega for Arceus and Mega form Z for Mewtwo maybe
Such a sad theme when you think about it: a creature not born but created into this world, seen as merely a toy for Destruction for one human and a footnote in many, losing his memory of his only friends and confused by where he belongs in this world.
I still think Mewtwo is such a sympathetic character and thinking about this theme and it's tone shows that.
Mewtwo has always been a sympathetic character, but yeah when I first saw the Origin of Mewtwo it struck me just how sympathetic he truely is. His creators tried to erase his memories of Bulbasaur-02, Charmander-02, Squirtel-02 and Amber-02, but clrealy something of all four remained. I mean Mewtwo's first 3 clones had Identical markings as those who were created along side Mewtwo. And at the end of the movie Mewtwo finally learns the lesson that Amber tried to teach him.
That basically shadow the hedgehog 's back story with some tweaks.

The fact that I can hear the first ten seconds of the theme and know exactly what is happening in the movie is ridiculous. My skin is crawling and I have chills listening to this theme. I have a mighty need to rewatch the movie now. Thank-you for bringing back my nostalgia.
Mewtwo will always remain the best legendary pokemon.
He made so much of an impact on me that in every game I have I have to capture him, it is my goal. Just the other day in Y I caught him and I'm so glad to have him lead my team into battle.

He isn't beyond human control all it takes is a powerful pokemon trainer.For example in all the games he can be caught and in the anime pokemo origins red captured him because his bond with charizard was stronger than even mewtwo's power.

I don't think people realize just how dangerous and powerful Mewtwo is. With his capabilities he could topple practically anything, even the gods based on his feats. I'll make a list so people can understand.
1. He's already a planet level threat based on his physic powers alone given he can create a storm that can wipe out life on the planet.
2. His advance intelligence is the most dangerous part about him given how he can easily replicate human technology. The guy was able to replicate the clone technology which is only achieved by some of the brightest of human minds and on top of that make it far more efficient.
3. With his ability to replicate cloning technology, he could easily clone any pokemon. All he needs in a small amount of DNA and he could potentially clone even legendary Pokemon. Imagine him cloning the creation trio or Rayquaza and as we've seen, all clones are loyal to him.
Mewtwo capabilities are practically limitless and I believes the creators knew that which is why they had to seriously nerfed Mewtwo over the course of the franchise. That my take but what do you guys think?

this is also proven by the fact that in the movie, he's not defeated through battle or anything. the only thing that could stop him was a change of his mindset. if he never realized what he was doing was wrong, he would've been unstoppable
@cynicalgold9992 What's interesting about what you said is Mewtwo was fighting Mew while at the same time suppressing the abilities of every other Pokemon there. The clones he created was shown to be more powerful than the originals but their special abilities was blocked for the sake of Mewtwo just to prove a point. I believe if he didn't do that then the clones would've defeated the originals and Mewtwo would have his clone army against Mew. Mew would be forced to escape.
The original intro of mewtwo strikes back should have never been taken out, it was very important to the film..

And then the maelstrom that is his rage.
It's also described as the most savage in battle.

God, the chills...
I can only imagine what experiencing that must've been like for Mewtwo. An unnatural creature born with the intelligence and sentience of human since the first moment of its existence, the mere consciousness of Mewtwo forming before even his identity or body could be completed for even himself to know. It makes me wonder if Mewtwo has a soul, being created by unnatural means.
Would something that has capacity to think and feel as human does, the capacity to mourn and seek vengeance, the capacity to set aside the hatred with which is has sustained itself, also go to the same place as humans when they pass on?
Mewtwo is just one big contradictory confusion to everything we know about Pokemon's spirits. And I love him for that.

One of my favourite scenes in Pokemon the First Movie was when Rhyhorn charged at Mewtwo but Mewtwo just grabbed him by the horn and threw him across the table with 1 hand.

Mewtwo was always my favorite. A god amongst the other pokemon (at the time). Now there's all these other ludicrous pokemon that are vapid of any kind of personality what so ever.
My Pokemon of choice is Mewtwo. It will always be Mewtwo. A psychic pokemon trainer in my own right. I had nothing but psychic pokemon, and Mewtwo with his demented dreams and twisted past. Well, any person like me would fall in love with such a pokemon.
Mewtwo only had personality because they made an entire movie about it in which it was created as a sole being with humanoid traits. So, it's no surprise that he has more of a relatable personality. It's not really fair to judge all other Pokémon negatively because of it. Usually they are supposed to be "vapid of any kind of personality", as they are a species, not a sole being like Mewtwo. So how does that make them ludicrous? (Do all humans or animal species have ONE specific personality?)

Ironically, he’s like sephiroth in origin.
Both were man made, created in labs to be the perfect weapons with the potential to destroy worlds, found out about it and declared war on humanity.
Difference being Mewtwo managed to recover, and redeemed himself (or themselves or whatever) whereas Sephiroth was evil to the end.
This is so good, genuinely just as Iconic to me as any Iconic themes composed by John Williams and Danny Elfman. Yet people complain that "it's not the same music they use din Japan".
The effort and time put into this soundtrack is absolutly mind blowing, its deffinetly my favorite musical reference to use. full of so many intence feelings, with the power to make someone cry by just hearing it, to make them feel as if they had the power that Mewtwo has, without even knowing who he is or what. and to give anxiety on the spot.

I absolutely love 3:05 where it really sounds like you can hear the passion in that ultimate attack in despairation, only to completely fail effortlessly by mewtwo's undefined power.
Mewtwo was always my favorite Pokemon, mostly for how badass it is, but especially for its philosophical depth.
I was in a nihilistic and existential phase when I first saw the movie, or at least, looked for the Japanese version, since I read that they changed the meanings of it. And that made me like Mewtwo a lot more.

Whether it’s Pokemon or other movies, they just don’t make movies like they used to anymore. Mewtwo Strikes Back is an absolute classic, and the art style is so nostalgic.

Mewtwo: [looks at the picture] "Mewtwo." Am I only a copy? Nothing but Mew's shadow?
Dr. Fuji: You are greater than Mew, improved through the power of human ingenuity. [Mewtwo turns to Dr. Fuji] We use the most advanced techniques to develop your awesome psychic powers.
Mewtwo: So, I am simply the end result of your experiment. What becomes of me now that your experiment is over?
Dr. Fuji: Oh, our experiment isn't over yet, it's just beginning! Now the serious testing begins.
Mewtwo: [narrows his eyes] These humans, they care nothing for me.
[the scientists congratulate each other]
Mewtwo: [becomes tense, then looks at his hands, clenching them in anger] Is that my purpose? Am I just an experiment? A laboratory specimen? [angrily] This cannot be my destiny! [angrily glows blue and starts destroying the lab]
Dr. Fuji: [sitting on the ground and watching the lab become engulfed with flames; in a horrified voice] We dreamed of creating the world's strongest Pokémon...[Mewtwo starts to form a blue orb around himself] and we succeeded.
[The blue orb enlarges and causes an explosion that destroys the lab entirely, killing all scientists, including Dr. Fuji. Afterwards, a helicopter approaches the island]
Mewtwo: [looking over the destruction he has caused] Behold my powers! I am the strongest Pokémon in the world. Stronger even than Mew. [hears footsteps and turns around to see Giovanni]
Giovanni: Those fools thought you were a science experiment. But I, I see you as a valuable partner.
Mewtwo: "Partner"?
Giovanni: With your psychic powers and my resources, together we can control the world.
Mewtwo: I do not need your help for that, human.
Giovanni: A wildfire destroys everything in its path. It will be the same with your powers unless you learn to control them. I can help you do that.
Mewtwo: How?
Giovanni: Trust me, and I'll show you a way to focus your powers that will make you invincible.
Mewtwo: Show me! [Mewtwo is shown being suited up in armor] You say this armor protects my body, yet it suppresses my powers.
Giovanni: Your powers are not being suppressed, they're being focused. Learn to use them to accomplish your purpose.
Mewtwo: What is that?
Giovanni: Patience, my friend. Your purpose will become clear.
Mewtwo: [Mewtwo is put on a battlefield, while Giovanni snaps his fingers and Mewtwo easily beats an Onix] So, this is my power. [a group of Tauros stampede towards Mewtwo but he lifts up them using his psychic powers while Team Rocket grunts capture them] I am in control now. [continues fighting Pokémon, still winning each battle easily] But why am I here? [later] Now I fully perceive my power. But, what is my purpose?
Giovanni: To serve your master. You were created to fight for me. That is your purpose.
Mewtwo: [outraged] That cannot be. You said we were partners. We stood as equals.
Giovanni: You were created by humans to obey humans. You could never be our equal.
Mewtwo: [angrily] Humans may have created me, but they will never enslave me! This cannot be my destiny! [starts breaking free]
Giovanni: Stop this now!
Mewtwo: [furiously] I was not born a Pokémon, I was created. And my creators have used and betrayed me. SO, I STAND ALONE! [Giovanni barely escapes while Mewtwo destroys his lab, and escapes to the island where he was created while his armor falls off and also takes off his helmet] Who am I? What is my true reason for being? [fades from the mountains to the ocean] I will find my own purpose... and purge this planet of all who oppose me. Human and Pokémon alike. The world will heed my warning. [menacingly] The reign of Mewtwo will soon begin.
Well for those who didnt know, mewtwos mega form isn't permanent. It's used in battle if wanted and returns back to normal after fight. The saddest thing is in the newest pokemon movie, where there is another mewtwo created, which is sad. I wish they kept original Mewtwo unique and respected the best character pokemon has ever seen

Just thought i'd share something- originally we were supposed to get the birth of mewtwo to precede the movie in order to tell us about the main villain, but 4kids or whatever didnt want us to sympathize with the villain (mewtwo) so they left that part out in the initial release to make mewtwo more ruthless. We eventually got the birth of mewtwo as an extra on the DVD release.
KeytarKing Im glad they did that. I liked the fact it made Mewtwo more ruthless, evil, and powerful. The best way to introduce people to an unstoppable force and make it believable is to never reveal their tragic past till much later.

@@LegendKiller1fan it makes him pointless though. Why does he feel the way he does in the movie? Questions in the story become unanswered, just cuz 4kids wanted to make sure children DIDN'T GET THE MESSAGE THE STORY WAS SUPPOSED TO TELL!
It wasn't just that, they even rewrote his whole script to make him more villainous. It's quite a shame that the west didn't get to experience such an amazing character the way it was meant to be told.

Same here! It even has the last part where when you catch Mewtwo and you're at that intense moment that keeps you at the edge of your seat when you're wondering if you caught him or not. If they make a sequel, I certainly hope it's Pokemon Gold. That'd be so awesome to see their version of the characters Gold and Silver (fangirl squeal)

Ah anime Mewtwo... see, ingame Mewtwo was great, a strong Pokémon and an asset to any team and all that. Origins Mewtwo, was badass, until it ate the Worf effect, and the ending of Origins turned into a commercial for X and Y and its Mega Evolutions ("Hey old school gamers who've fallen out of the games who we targeted this special towards- see how badass this Mega Charizard is? It just beat Mewtwo! *coughbuyournewgamecough*"), But Mewwo in the first film and Mewtwo Returns, wow. That was an amazing character, with a great story, compelling personality, satisfying character arc, and as shown here, inarguably a badass theme. No other version of Mewtwo can compare, in my honest opinion at least. It's really a pity the newest movie didn't have this Mewtwo return for a hat trick of appearances, with this theme in tow. Given what I've seen of that Mewtwo's role in that film, I don't see why it couldn't have been this one... a softer, gentler Mewtwo, still somewhat distrustful of humans, but with its view of humans softened, and its view of its own place in the world and other Pokémon softened. It would've fit in my opinion, and would've been great to see this amazing character, and theme, return one more time... alas, what could've been...
And then Mewtwo got Mega Evolutions and became even more badass.

That one is explicitly a different Mewtwo according to the director of the new film (no matter how little sense it makes for two different Mewtwos to be independently created, that's what we have to deal with), and honestly from what I've seen of the sixteenth movie, that Mewtwo is far weaker than the original (to the point that it required Mega Evolution to even come close to the original's level of hax).

A very, very underrated score. It makes me anxious just listening to it.
This track always reminds me of my childhood. I've been very different from other kids, which we now know is due to my autism. I remember looking at them, knowing that I'm not quite like them, but not knowing why or how to change it. It turned into jealousy as the other kids rejected me more and more. I just couldn't understand. How could they be so careless when they did their best to keep me out, cause they too knew I was different. I resulted to violence for anyone who challenged me. Jealousy had turned into anger. What was it that really set me apart from them? How could we have the same day, but live in two different worlds? Kids taunted me a lot and I came for all of them. I channeled my anger into beating them up one by one. It didn't matter that I was younger, it was raw and unfiltered frustration and much more than the other kids bargained for. Why? Why couldn't we understand each other. Since there was no intervention by teachers others than just scolding me, kids learned to just not bother with me. I wasn't happy, but at least I had my peace.
There would be a very long time of not understanding even after I switched schools multiple times and grew up. And in a sense I always related to Mewtwo. He knew he was just as much of a living creature as humans and pokemon, but there was just no room for understanding. I'm good today, I'm well liked by the people around me, but still to this day, I feel like there's no room for understanding, but since I'm an adult people don't have to care that much about me fitting in. I'm grateful on one side, since I finally got my peace, but I just can't shake of the feeling of being the puzzle part that doesn't quite fit.

Apparently, in the original japanese version, Mew's first intention was to kill Mewtwo and his army of clone pokemon because he deemed them as unnatural beings. Quite different from the dubbed in which he was there to prove Mewtwo that every being has a heart thats unique and so on and so forth :p

Yep. Before he met Ash Mewtwo thought humans had made Pokemon into slaves and he wanted to destroy humanity and all Pokemon he considered weak then rule the world with his clone Pokemon. But the Pokemon tears that revived Ash made him realise he was wrong.
Born from the D.N.A of mew and man, Mewtwo is and always will be the best legendary in my book. When I was younger I related to him because I felt like him, alone, alienated but like him I learned that it doesn't got to be that. Mewtwo will always be my favorite even with his new form

It always reminds me of my days at elementary school where my best friend and his brother played pokemon too and i wasted my masterball and it took me like 3 hours to catch mewtwo ith a hyperball and i was so happy i called them over to a battle :D Ah my childhood was awesome .

You know how you can't bring the trading cards to school! That was our doing! We didn't need no Steam account! You bought video games at the store, in a cartridge! And we played them in Game Boys the size of an adult man's hand! And video games were ALL we could play on them!
I rember those days back during gen 1 know we have all this mega evolution shite just so that can make more games but in all fairness I do have a special place in my heart for charizard x. still when mewtwo and new were the super legendaries of pokemon

I enjoy this feeling. Mewtwo is one of my favorite Pokemon more than Mew. I'm 12 year old girl and I know a lot, Not only did he find his purpose but he also found his heart. I close my eyes and listen to beginning, but it gets scary for me in the middle. U.U

I had this awesome Mewtwo back on the first game cart I ever owned, Pokémon Blue. I had him for years. I used to beat The Elite Four with him over and over when I got home from school, just for something to do. I loved taking him through Pokémon Stadium and handing the computer's Mewtwo it's ass with him. His stats were insane, had HP over 400 and a special stat to match.

Mewtwo, Cloned from Mew and started out really small. The moment he had conscience, in that short time he made friends with a little girl named Ambertwo who later died cause she wasn't a strong enough clone. He was very sad and became enraged cause he's only friend was gone and was alone with the words "life is wonderful". Then had his mind erased. Older he later regained conscience and wondered why life was wonderful. Not understanding humans and feeling they had no purpose for him but experiments he destroyed the lab and killed a lot of people. Was lied to by Giovanni about being partners and was told his only purpose in life was to serve humans. With more rage and confusion he decided to rid the world of humans and had the power to do so with ease. He created a storm with just the wave of his hands.
