    The 2nd tip really is something that I’m thinking about this season. I’ve often whipped my skis laterally from edge to edge. Now I’m trying to ease into the carve and let that energy build up before your weight moves to the downhill foot. It is scary though, I and I presume others avoid this b/c that transition zone in b/t turns is where you can catch an edge.

    Very good tips! Other instructors want to tell beginners 10 different things to think about at the same time but that will not work! Skinning/caving doesn't work like that!
    My most important tip: ... Don't think too much and listen to your ski ...it tells you everything he wants from you :D ... skis are all slightly different: some loves more pressure on the tip at the begin of a turn, some love more energy on the back on the end of a turn and some loves it somewhere in between. ---> try to feel it.

    Hi Kaylin, I have enjoyed the videos that you are putting out there, nicely done. As a former coach/instructor I share your life long appetite for improving my own ski performance, and helping others, when asked... One of the aspects I find difficult sometimes to describe/explain is the importance of "moving the hips on top" (your Tip#2) of the skis especially at the beginning of the turn (before the fall line). For me personally, it is in some ways like the sensation of my *body (centre of gravity) free falling down the slope/fall line while the speed and direction of which is being controlled by my skis. (*centre of gravity = 2/3rds of my body weight). When I watch a high performance skier, such as yourself or superG or downhill racer, you can easily see how connected, how fluid and dynamic their turns are. Intermediate skiers struggle with the concepts of linking turns and using energy from the last turn to help start the next turn and what happens is the turns become disjointed, not fluid and in some case a "series of linked recoveries"... kinda reminds me of my old ski racing days. :-) Would love to hear/see your thoughts on this oh so important phase of the turn, break it down! Thanks. S2e

    Some women skiers may need some help in the form of moving bindings forward and/or heel lifts to get their COG over the ski. I'm not sure about Volkl, but some ski makers make the same ski for men and women and just change the top sheet graphics and move women's mounting forward a bit. Someone also pointed out the A-frame in her left turns, I bet she also has custom orthotics and maybe even canting when she was racing. Boot shaft adjustments also help women's stance. Speaking from experience...

      Especially with new ski technology it can be much easier to engage the edge earlier in the turn with a wider stance. A difficult habit to break for skiers who have been skiing a long time but experiment with skiing “ugly” with a wider stance and feel the difference. You’ll never see a WC racer skiing with their skis close together and we can all agree that their skiing is strong, fluid, effective and looks great.

      Do this drill at 1:18 ruclips.net/video/2I2AXBxCGmo/видео.html If you want to carve whole turn on one ski (outside ski) your body position must be perfect. Also while turning the inside (lifted) ski slightly crosses the outside ski.

    • @olieldridge7959
      @olieldridge7959 4 года назад +3

      You could also be trying to apply pressure by pushing your skis into the snow, this can work on perfect groomers but you will almost certainly have your skis sliding out at the end of the turns on hard snow or ice. Instead you could try to really maintain balance over the outside ski, and create a greater edge angle so that you are using the shape of the ski to provide the grip, i think of it as the snow pushing my skis as opposed to me pushing the snow. When you look at all the great skiers (Paul Lorenz, Reilly macglashan, JF Beaulieu, any racer) At the 2nd phase of their turn (when the skis are pointing directly down the hill) they are creating a massive edge angle, which builds pressure against the snow and catapults you into the next turn. You could watch a lot of RUclips videos at .25 speed and just try to see exactly what they are doing from the skis upwards to create the motion.
      On the slopes you could do a few drills to work on edge control.

    • @olieldridge7959
      @olieldridge7959 4 года назад +3

      Another thing to add is to not try to get super low like the racers. That comes from increasing the speed and therefore increasing the forces in play, so you naturally lean over further to create a greater edge angle and maintain a stable platform. If you try to lean into the turn you could end up ‘dropping your inside hip’ which in turn will put your weight on your inside ski. This will cause your skis to diverge and your outside ski will start trying to go downhill, which will put you in the back seat. So again, important to stay well balanced over the outside ski. I hope all of this makes sense, i just really love talking about skiing!!

      @@JB91710 yes, I think you're saying what I'm trying to say, keeping balance over the downhill ski. And yes, skiing is just a sport of falling down the hill in style and in control. In terms of where the "braking" happens I think in phase 1 and/or 2 of the turn, just like when driving, you "brake" going into the turn and accelerate out of it, you use your lower body and your skis to steer you at the start of the turn (phase 1) you feel the bite and get that great puff of snow from your skis in phase 2, and you use that to accelerate you out of the turn in phase 3. This in theory can be applied to all turn shapes and sizes, but is most applicable to medium to long radius carved turns. When doing short turns on steep terrain then the formula changes a little. I find it easier to think about what I'm doing from the skis upward, so what do I need the skis to do? What do I need the ankles, then knees, then hips to do to make that happen etc. Just my 2 cents, it works for me :)

      Hi, do you have any video of your skiing? It would be much better to give specific feedback, at the moment it is hard to give a piece of good advice. Standing backward could cause more things. It is possible that you are not bent in your ankles or you could ski on your hells, you can send me your video of your skiing to michal.novacek2@gmail.com and I will let you know some tips ;-)
      "Also how should my arms and shoulders move? How should I rotate them?"
      There are several opinions. I say that your movement comes from ground, so all the movements come from ankles, foot, thumb. What I want from my clients is, to ski only with their legs (lower part of their body) not their shoulders/arms. It is slower to turn and causes much less controllability of their skiing.

    • @ges5757
      @ges5757 4 года назад +2

      Free or inside foot pull back is your friend. Assuming you are counter-balancing and carrying most of your weight on your outside ski thru the turn, you can pull the inside foot back which will help with your fore-aft balance. Arm position can also impact fore-aft balance, if you're dropping them back near your hips you'll find yourself in the back seat soon. You want to be able have them out front, and catch your hands in your peripheral vision. Google inside foot pullback for more info.

    • @yonyon972
      @yonyon972 3 года назад +1

      @@kimjunguny This does not seem to be a good tip since will likely result in keeping the back seat to adjust the exaggerated hands throwing. What is rather recommended is to lean forward your hip and chest, being more stable and easy to keep all along.

      The exact amount of pressure on the outside foot is up for debate and quite a 'touchy' argument among skiing professionals. There should, however, be a progressive build up of pressure in each turn with a transfer of weight from foot to foot in the turn transition.

    • @stevencooney9236

      Edge angle is not dependent on stance width Jake. If you ski narrow-stanced you are ok. A softball width is more than enough to ski at 20-30 FIS points all day long. So the ability to master the carved turn is this... "Tip both skis to the downhill edges while the skis are pointed across the hill." This is called early initiation but that term does not give you the learning target you need to rehearse and repeat on the hill. Any time you tip your feet you must counterbalance. The two skills are married and it's non-negotiable. When you watch Kaylin she generally skis with level shoulders (counter balanced) because she uses her obliques to create balance and edge angle. Forget about early pressure. Call it early edge angle before the fall line and drag your outside ski pole tip in the snow to develop a sense of how the body is used to generate high edge before the fall line. Have fun!

      Ski boot is really a personal preference and it depends on what style of skiing you do.
      Skiers with a racing background have grown-up with extremely tight high flex boots.
      In this case I'm sure there are some who like to jump into a boot with less flex from time to time if they are casually cruising around the mountain.
      Have a great season.

      I wouldn't change my stance unless I was having trouble with balance or edge control, and even then it would be specific to the type of run (bumps. corduroy, pow), my speed, etc. One size does NOT fit all. Here is a video of the best free skiers in the world using a variety of stances... mostly narrow, but depending on the terrain. ruclips.net/video/oCcEPL-X48Q/видео.html

    Skiing is about balance not stability. So the demonstration of a static stance resisting a shove should not be relevant to skiing well. Shoulder width apart is unnecessary if skiers have developed proper balancing skills over the outside ski. A wide stance just encourages excessive weighting of the inside ski, A Framing and looking like a golf cart coming down the hill. Tipping skis on edge is easier with a narrow stance.
    Here's a skier that I would dream of emulating, Australia's Reilly McGlashan. Narrow stance & superb skiing at all radius. He creates the horizontal separation when carving hip to snow via flexing the inside leg. He stays balanced by upper/lower body separation. He counterbalances via angulation. A good test of balance is, can you lift your inside ski off the snow at any point in the turn? ruclips.net/video/VVy3A0OzApU/видео.html Here's another one ruclips.net/video/ZPgXiEf0-kM/видео.html

      Thanks for the message Ian,
      As I am sure you are aware, there are many different approaches to high-performance technical skiing. Reilly is a spectacular skier and no doubt has one of the best approaches in the game.
      This video, however, is Kaylin's approach to better carving and we have seen a significant amount of positive feedback from viewers who tell us they have improved from the tips given in this clip.
      Skiers should get out there and experiment with different approaches to find out what works best for them!

    • @chrisroblin3320
      @chrisroblin3320 3 года назад

      @ Ian Dunn : 100 % OK with what you say. Notice that McGlashan is one among many others fantastic skiers. Two of them : Harb and Maruyama, narrow stance skiers.
      Wide stance is Ok for downhill and for speed ski (''KL'' or ''Kilomètre Lancé'' in french) because, as you explained it very well, they need stability. For the rest of skiing, all we need is balance, much easier to get with a narrow stance.
      Anyway, the narrow stance has got nothing to see with ''an old school skiing'', like Kaylin said.

    While I agree with most of what you said, for someone who is trying to improve their 'carving', your videos are confusing. It appears that you are putting equal weight on both skis or sometimes even more weight on your uphill ski. You are obviously a racer and ski like one, but that technique is not what you should be showing people who just want to improve. I'm a former instructor and have been skiing for over 50 years. Skiing with your feet apart started back in the 70's or more accurately with Killy and the 68 Olympics. Not with the advent of shaped skis. Stenmark perfected the independent leg action. Sorry, your generation doesn't get to claim those innovations :). If you teach people to ski on their down hill ski it is easy to teach them to carve their turns. Once they are proficient in carving on their down hill ski, they will figure their own style and the weight distribution that works for them. Most skiers do not have the strength or agility to ski like a racer.

    I am confused why 99% of the turns shown in the video are not carved, if that was the aim. The Rail roads were carved, but were notably not like the rest of the extremely skilful skiing shown. There's a huge disconnect between what is said, and the skilful skiing being shown. Every time there is a slight jet of ski sideways from a ski: it is not carving : there is a slight sideways slip. A carved ski will never jet snow sideways as there is no lateral movement of the ski relative to the snow. skilful skiers very rarely carve, as you can't perform as shaped or as tight turns as when the turn is skilfully shaped, so it is nearly, but not quite carving. it is just "off" edge locking and carving. (there is an angle of a few degrees between where the ski is pointing and where it is travelling all the way round the turn) It takes a lot of skill to do this : but it is not carving. Carving is very limiting : which is why you never see carved turns in world cup races. Courses are set so that you can't take the easy option of carving turns. It is far more useful to learn to shape curved ever so slightly skidded turns ( and I don't mean massively sliding sideways like many un skilled skiers do where they throw the skis out sideways every time they try to turn.) The only reason to bang on about carving is because it is a still a huge marketing buzz word for recreational skier marketing.

      - "In between turns, you have to get your hips up so that you can get that tip pressure, to begin to engage and bend that ski".
      - "You have to establish that pressure by getting forward and then working that ski using the shins on the front of your boot".

I don't exactly know who is 'we', but if you say that you receive a 'significant amount of positive feedback' on what is presented here as a ski educational video from a former Olympian I have little to say about this. I can only feel sorry about the persons watching and admiring this. In fact what we see here is a quite mediocre free skiing (in the carving sense of this vast category) and even more mediocre and irrelevant analysis that have little to do with the art of carving. What one would expect from a 2 times olimpian is to demonstrate and explain the anatomy of the perfect carved turn for example. The fundamentals that one must build is his own skiing in order to achieve it (adequate upper and lower body separation, inside and outside ski tipping angles throughout the turn, fore aft balance to name a few) I hope you start getting my point....
