  • This is a complete teardown, disassembly/reassembly video of my G73JH-BST7. I clean out the ventilation system, remove the old thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, and install new Arctic Silver 5.
This video is helpful for those who need to do any sort of work on the inside of the ASUS G73 Series.

I used your video yesterday to disassemble my G73jh and clean it. I have this laptop for about 8 years but never took the time to clean it since it's such a complex machine. Your guide helped me take it apart allowing me to thoroughly clean it and repaste the CPU and GPU. There was a LOT of dust inside but I used a vacuum cleaner to remove all the dirt and dust. It went from 80+ degrees C with just browsing the internet and running a couple of apps to 50-55 degrees C. Idle went down from about 65-70 deg C to a cool 39-45 :D I used Arctic Silver 5 on both CPU and GPU (line method since their shape is rectangular to get the best spread). Thanks for this video!

The Hot Shot It worked perfectly until a few months ago when I got some graphical glitches. I think the GPU died. Can’t turn it on anymore. But after 10 years it was about time to get a new laptop anyway. I’d still like to fix it because my new laptop doesn’t have a cd-drive. Don’t really know where to begin though

Nicely done! This is the work of a pro. Even if you don't know the laptop by heart, you really seem to know what you're doing.
Nevertheless I don't have the gut to disassemble mine. I'll just wait for the moment when I'll be forced to do it (when the fans will not start anymore).
Thanks for the video, and thumbs up!

  • @hackertalkz

thanks, first 18 mins were all i needed to crack this case open safely. once I got to the 4 screws under the keyboard my training kicked in.
ended up replacing the motherboard & changed the processor to the Intel Core i7-2760QM 2.40GHz 6MB SR02W . The 2600 series which originally came with this pc ran really hot!! I got it from a seller from ebay which sold it to me, but did not tell me it was running very HOT! From much research and talking with my electronic professor, he told me what TDP was. So I choosed a newer & updated processor that had the same TDP as came from the manufacturer but that was much faster.
The g73sw I ordered when on my lab before was very hot. It warmed my lap with a temp of at least 90 degrees. Now with the new motherboard ( OEM ASUS G73SW SERIES 17.3" Motherboard Intel 60-N3IMB1000-C08 69N0K9M10C08 ) this computer has no heat coming from its case even after being on for 16 hours straight doing college research & CAD designs.
I hope this will help someone. Nothing worst than buying another persons baggage from ebay. But it is much cheaper to order someone else's problems than buying a new PC from BestBuy at $1800 plus dollars if you know a little something about computers. The G3 runs amazing with this new i7.
I can honestly say "THIS LAPTOP" runs PAR with my desktop on every level... and the specs on my Desktop has 8-core ( AMD FX-Series FX-9590 DeskTop CPU Socket AM3 938 FD9590FHW8KHK ) with a water cooler ( Enermax ELC-LMR240-BS Liqmax II 240 2x120mm CPU Liquid Cooling System ) to keep that bad boy processor cool because the TDP ratio on it is 225 -240 watts --- which is fucking HOT!!. Also my desktop has 2 - 2GB Video cards by Sapphire which was very decent in 2014 when I custom built this computer - desktop.
SO IF YOU WANT A VERY GOOD GAMING LAPTOP THAT MAY HAVE SOME COOLING ISSUES AND WILLING TO THROW AN EXTRA $80 IN CHANGING OUT THE ORIGINAL PROCESSOR BEFORE IT BURNS OUT THE MOTHERBOARD, THE G73SW IS THE PERFECT CHOICE!! TOTAL COST $400 FROM EBAY WITH ALSO BUYING THE OTHER PROCESSOR. UNLESS YOU CAN FIND AN OLD G73SW THAT IS SOLD FOR PARTS ONLY AND DON'T MIND SINKING $150 FOR THE MOBO & PROCESSOR COMBO, HOPING THE VIDEO CARD OR MONITOR IS STILL GOOD, AND STILL HAS ITS MEMORY AND HARD DRIVE...

About halfway through the video, not following along yet just watching to see the thoroughness and if there is anything i need to be worried about. So far I love the detail and recommendations throughout taking it apart, and soon I will commit my own surgery to try and combat my overheating. This is and has been my only PC for 4 years, I don't have the ability to get another PC for a long time and without a PC idk what my life would be. Wish me luck and thank you so much for the video.

    ASUS ROG G750
    Hello gamers!
I am writing to share my experiences when doing a re-paste and deep cleaning of my asus rog. First of all, thanks to all the users like me who posted pictures on how to complete the procedure.
I would like to point out that is a bit risky procedure but if you are calm and research what to do you could do it yourself and the results are simply amazing. (I am not responsible if you destroy your computer!).
    IMPORTANT AIDS:
Perhaps one of the most challenging things to do when making your notebook to pieces (literally) is to KEEP TRACK of which screw / where.
    - In a paper make a drawing of your computer, label it bottom, front, etc. Then make a sign for each screw and put each screw in the drawing so that you remember which is which and where it goes.
    - I use cotton and alcohol to clean the old thermal paste. Use it with care and only on the processor and video card main chip.
    - Test you are using the right screwdriver, some components (especially the heatsink) needs force to open, I almost destroyed it.
    - I use a not so powerful vacuum cleaner and a cloth to GENTLY remove the accumulated dust.
    THE CHALLENGE:
    - As mentioned before, KEEP TRACK of what screw where! Remember all the connectors, most important be GENTLE.
    - The re-assembly can get quite challenging, but luckily you did a map... Double check all the connectors. The 3D one requires a pull upwards.
    HEATSINK:
    - When you are finally at the heatsink, remove all the screws for the processor unit. Rub it with cotton and alcohol. Try to use a cotton that doesn't leave fibers. I cleaned with a toothpick some narrow places where the old paste was.
    - I made some research and found out the best Thermal Paste was ARTIC SILVER 5.
    - Just apply a little, the size of a pea.
    - When you injected the paste in the center of the clean component (it shines) remember to close it UNIFORMINGLY. Meaning not too much pressure from one side or another. Follow a CROSS PATTERN and screw progressively.
    THE RESULTS:
Simply amazing. It's even better than when it was new. I used to get overheating problems when playing some games like Ghost Recon Phantoms and Starcraft 2. I had to lower the settings in order to avoid overheating, throttling and forced shutdowns...
With the new work the computer is INCREDIBLE COOL, I play the SAME games as before on MAX SETTINGS and the ventilators barely go. They DO SPIN but little, by touching the computer is TOTALLY FRESH in any point - this means the thermal system is working like a charm, it captures the heat and dissipates it to the ventilators. I think it has never been so efficient.
I think than doing a deep fans cleaning and re-paste with high quality thermal paste is the procedure that has produced the best results ever and amazing gains in performance: games in higher settings, no throttling, less heat, less component stress and even more battery.

The heat sink vents clog with dust VERY easily in this laptop - it begins to overheat in no time. My solution is to blow compressed air into the air vents at the rear once every three months - you will see a small cloud of dust emerge each time you do this :) I've been doing this for five years now and it still runs cool and as quiet as a mouse.

    • @hackertalkz
      @hackertalkz 7 лет назад

IF YOU EVER OPENED THE CASE... YOU WILL SEE IT BEING A CLOSED LOOP TO THE ENTRANCE FAN AND EXIT FAN. BEST TO TAKE OFF THE KEYBOARD AND BLOW THAT WAY USING THE STRAW. SO YOUR BLOWING THE DUST OUT AND NOT JUST INSIDE THE CASE. I FIXED THIS PROBLEM BY ADDING A FILTER INSIDE THE CASE SO IT DOESN'T CLOG UP THE HEAT SINK. JUST MAKE SURE THE CLOTH/MATERIAL/FILTER YOU USE HAS GOOD AIRFLOW YET CAN TRAP DUST OR YOUR PROCESSOR WILL OVERHEAT QUICKLY..

About to do this on my ASUS G73JH that I got off of eBay back in September. Only spent $230 for this tank initially, added a 120gb SSD for like $20, and overall its been the best laptop I've ever used for a pricetag of ~$250. BUT, while gaming my temps on the GPU hit almost 80C (CPU never goes past 70C though), the fans start to get very loud way too soon after jumping into games like CSGO and Albion Online, and I occasionally hit black screens that force me to manually reboot. I'm praying that once I do reapply thermal paste to both the GPU and CPU, as well as clean out any dust in the fans or throughout the laptop period, the black screens stop occurring because I've forfeited WAY too many competitive CSGO matches and expeditions in Albion Online because of them...

    • @k0rupt

@@TheTechnoMack I just did this right now; I was surprised that the inside wasn't very dusty at all (clearly the guy who sold it to me must have cleaned it before he sold it to me), but I was absolutely DISGUSTED by the amount of thermal paste on the GPU! It was pasted over the ENTIRE thing--green PCB and all--and layered on there like peanut butter on a sandwich! After cleaning it all off, which was certainly a task in itself, I applied a much smaller amount that only covered the little heat spreader on the unit and put everything back together as you showed. So far after about 20 minutes putting the GPU at full-load I'm getting an average max temp of 58C as opposed to the usual ~79C! Plus the fans are spinning a lot quieter as well. I'll report back again later after I try to play for a few hours though, I wanna see if this truly fixed my black screen issues. Regardless though, thank you SO much for your tutorial! This was an absolute lifesaver!!!

You seem very well versed on the Best Buy G73JH. I have this exact model, and I have a different issue than most. Thank you so much for the video.
My Subwoofer is BLOWN and I am desperately seeking a fix.
Is the 3.5mm jack part of the sub-woofer?
Can I simply disable it when I have the chassis taken apart or is it a fake 2.1 audio that is sync'd with the 2 speakers?
The Windows 7 software, and the Realtek software have no way to disable the sub-woofer alone.
I have tried other compatible drivers, but none of them can disable the sub.
I check the ASUS Forums, Windows 7 help, Toms Hardware...
There doesn't seem to be anyone online who knows how the Sub assmebly works.
    Any Feedback would be great.
Hopefully I can just unplug it, but that would be too convenient.

OK, I was expecting something about upgrade (as is in the title), but this is just repasting video...

+Sandra V. Good point. I guess I just considered cleaning and re-pasting an upgrade. You're right though, no physical hardware was replaced during this video. I wasn't intentionally trying to be deceptive.

+TheTechnoMack Np, you are (partially) right. Repaste is a great performance improvement. I was just looking for an info on RAM upgrade and ended up watching what I'd done so many times lol. No biggie...

Why the hell would you want to remove the Monitor?????? you don't need to do that....Before you do a video like this you may need to know what you are doing....
btw, the reason Compaq went out of business was they had a serious problem with their tech support....

    • @TheTechnoMack

I definitely did not WANT to remove the screen. It was required. I'm following the steps for motherboard replacement in the service manual from ASUS.
