    Fantastic video. I adore Drum n Bass. I like the passion and love that avid listeners share and I’ve seen plenty of wholesome interactions in the community from that. But there is a weird gatekeeping “um achtually 🤓” corner of the DnB community in naming its subgenres that makes me hesitant to discuss or describe music I like or even question how to label the music I make. So this video is helpful in more ways than you might have known. I know this video isn’t (nor does it try to be) the DnB Bible but it helps me feel like I know the subject better. Thank you for not making me feel like an idiot for not knowing what industrial-microtonal-neurofunk-cottagecore-breakdance-IBS-locrian-junglebreak is.

I'd probably have added Halftime as a subgenre (see - Om Unit, Alix Perez) - also has the half-time drum feel but is less EDM-Dubsteppy. Good work regardless :)

    it's really sad to see how this new style direction (modern liquid dnb) has gone too soft pop. real liquid funk/dnb is almost a lost art these days and only a smaller number of underground artists do this real liquid funk and not the modern pop liquid dnb of today, it's awful and I love the old school liquid funk style which sounds 100% better. and if you want to hear my own songs that are *liquid funk* dnb style, you can find them on my channel 🥳🍫☕🍹🍸🥂this was interesting video

    Well, I can't blame you for adding the break into drum and bass, but you missed adding the west coast break, which started the florida break, the progressive break, the baltimore club, and the hardcore breaks that would be its revived version of hardcore rave which in turn is known as breakbeat hardcore or oldskool hardcore!!!
    and on the drum and bass side, you have not added technoid, halftime, footwork jungle, dubwise, drumfunk, and crossbreed!!!

    • @donit.
      @donit.  Год назад

      Whats the difference beteen hardcore breaks and hardcore rave? I already have progressive breaks. Baltimore Club I would say thats basically just Truntabelism and falls under Hip Hop, no?
      Technoid falls under Techstep I'd say, footwork jungle is the same as ragga jungle, I wouldnt say Dubwise is dnb, Drumfunk is debatable, but what I heard so far that people call drumfunk was always either Atmospheric Jungle or Breakcore (feel free to give me a counter example though) and Crossbreed even though is has drumbreaks, I would definitely put that under hardcore and not dnb.
      West coast breaks is a good one tough.

    • @junbuyo
      @junbuyo Год назад

      @@donit.
      The difference between hardcore breaks and hardcore rave is that hardcore breaks is a revival of hardcore rave, which by the way is breakbeat hardcore (its main name, of course), which also has resurfaced since 2000 since hardcore rave It has ceased to be relevant since the mid-90s, so hardcore breaks takes influences from the original hardcore rave and adds modern styles such as dubstep and footwork and drum and bass and finally the uk bass!!!

    Neurofunk (Breakage)
    I don't think that's the best example you could have put there my man lol
    Breakage is waaaaaaaaaay too chill for neuro and hes more known for his jungle stuff. I think a better example would have been any current artist on Blackout and such, Pythius is a good example I'd say, Counterstrike is great too but that's more on the Technoid side of things which is even more aggressive Neuro basically lol
    as for an older neurofunk example maybe Optiv - Brainworm or Ed Rush & Optical - Chub Rub or any old BSE / State Of Mind stuff
    As for modern liquid it actually hasn't moved to a more pop sound, you're just not looking in the right places or the right artists, plenty of artists still doing traditional liquid today

      Fair point with the neurofunk.

    Cool concept for a video but the choice of examples for jump up and neurofunk are …. Interesting. those are some of the most popular subgenres and the examples do not capture the sound well. Based off those I would imagine the accuracy for genres I’m not as familiar with are also questionable. Also where is liquid funk? And halftime? What people call liquid funk is usually either liquid dnb or microfunk. Halftime is something I would count under Darkstep, though here I think its also ok to see it as a seperate genre.
      And sorry if it came across that way, but I didn't intend to call modern liquid dnb no real liquid dnb, I only used the word to differentiate between it and the one that existed first. Thats also why I put it in quotes, because I wanted to emphasize that none of them is more "real" than the other.

      I would usually count that under Hardcore Rave. But some people differentiate between them as Hardcore Rave being the "oldschool" genre and Crossbreed the more modern one, I think thats fair too.

    Half of the genres in the video are not DnB. Florida Breaks? Is that a joke? Many genres are also wrong. And many more are missing.

    • @donit.
      @donit.  8 месяцев назад

      Maybe if you see Breaks as a seperate genre, but I don't think there's any subgenre in there that wasn't at least very strongly influenced by DnB or Breaks.
      Regarding your alleged wrong and missing genres, it would be helpful if you could be a bit more specific there, what do you think is wrong or missing?

    • @birdman8375

      @@donit. Theres a genre called breakbeat that encompasses everything you call breaks. Hardcore rave is definitely not DnB. Jungle makes a bridge between Breakbeat Hardcore and DnB, but is also a distinct genre, but thats ok if you put it inside DnB genre. First Jump Up example you mention is not the old Jump Up, is actually more turned to the Nu Jump Up you later present. Old Jump Up is a subgenre of Jungle (check this one for old Jump Up: Dead Dred - Dred bass). Big Beat is a subgenre of breakbeat (The Prodigy is not DnB). Kemal - Hostile is more Techstep than Darkstep, so not a good example. A better example is DJ Hidden - The Narrators (Eye-D remix). What you call Psybreaks is actually Neurofunk, you should remove the examples you call Neurofunk and replace them by the ones you call Psybreaks. The first one you call Neurofunk (Breakage) seems more Techstep / Drumfunk. The second one (Counterstrike) seems more Techstep / Darkstep (check instead the more recent Counterstrke work, most of it is Neurofunk). Breakcore is also not DnB. It is a unique genre, more turned to Breaks and Hardcore Techno. But Drill and Bass is a mix of Breakcore and DnB. The examples you call Drumstep are Nu Jump Up. A good example of Drumstep is Rusko - Everyday (Netsky Remix). The first example you call Dancefloor is Liquid Dnb, the second one is more turned to Liquid and Microfunk. Missing genres: Halftime / Halfstep (different than Drumstep), Technoid, Skullstep, Crossbreed, Drumfunk, Dubwise, Trancestep, Hardstep (Jungle), Atmospheric DnB (not the Jungle one), Neuro Jump Up (Neurofunk + Nu Jump Up), Abstract DnB (well you can ignore this one). Check out some Zardonic stuff too, he combines DnB with Metal. I may be missing some genres too.

      @@birdman8375 I agree that Hardcore Rave is more Hardcore than it is DnB, but I would say its a subgenre of both, since it has strong enough influences from both. Same with Breakcore (including The Prodigy).
      Regarding the missing genres:
      Technoid - Whats the difference to Techstep?
      Skullstep, Hardstep - Same as Darkstep.
      Crossbreed - Same as Hardcore Rave
      Drumfunk - Same as Microfunk
      Atmospheric DnB - Whats the difference to Atmospheric Jungle?
      Halftime - I put this under Darkstep, but since there is actually a clear line you can draw, I also don't disagree if somebody sees it as a seperate genre.
      Dubwise - Same As Ragga Jungle
      Trancestep - Usually used for either Dancefloor or Chillstep, maybe give an example of what you mean?
      Tbh I have no idea how you can think that my Dancefloor examples are Liquid DnB and Microfunk, they are clearly way more energetic and noisy.
      Also the first Jumpup example is definitely not Nu Jumpup, if you listen to the entire song you can tell for sure because of the long intro and non-modern structure. I think even the small part is a very typical example of Jumpup.
      I think Kemal - Hostile is Darkstep, because its more agressive and has emo and punk elements. Darkstep and Techstep are generally quite similar though.
      That Psybreaks and Neurofunk is basically the same is one thing I agree with, I only noticed a couple of months after making this video when I listened to the genres a bit more, that its a bit pointless to differentiate between them.

      @@donit. No no no no. Hardstep is a genre of Jungle, similar to Darkside, but heavier and not so dark. It has nothing to do with darkstep. Examples are DJ SS - Black or Renegade - Terrorist. Skullstep is related to Darkstep, but much harder. Check out Synthakt - Desert Sun. Technoid is way different than Techstep, it is a mix of techno and DnB. A good example is Raiden & Current Value - RM Bleeps. Crossbreed is not Hardcore Rave. Creebreed is a crossover between hard DnB (mostly Darkstep), and Hardcore Techno. An example is Lowroller - Mixbreed Soldier, another example is Frazzbass - I Lied. Its much more recent than Hardcore Rave (I see what you mean with Hardcore Rave, it comes from Breakbeat Hardcore, but don't confuse it with Hardcore Techno, it also evolves from it, but is something completely different now). Microfunk is the same as Minimal DnB. Drumfunk is focuses on complex drum beats and has nothing to do with minimal. Check out Seba and Paradox for drumfunk stuff. Atmospheric DnD (Adam F - Aromatherapy) is drum and bass, while Atmospheric Jungle (DJ Crystl - Meditation) is jungle. Thats why I told you should distinguish between Jungle and DnB. Liquid DnB builds upon Atmospheric DnB. Halftime is drum and bass with half tempo. If it has dubstep influences, you can call it Drumstep. Otherwise its just Halftime. Here is an example of Technoid Halftime: Dean Rodell - Proximity. Once again, Ragga Jungle is jungle, while Dubwise is drum and bass. Here is an example: Juju - Skylarking. Trancestep mixes psytrance and DnB. Concord Dawn is probably the most known artist of the genre. Concord Dawn - Cloud City. Dancefloor I dont think is a genre. Maybe its dancable drum and bass, but in that case it should encompass a lot of genres. Chillstep I also dont know, but should be a genre of Dubstep, not DnB. Psybreaks is not Neurofunk. Psybreaks mixes breakbeat and psytrance. Neurofunk is a distortion of funky bass, it is also psychedelic, but has nothing to do with psytrance nor breakbeat. There are other two genres related with Neurofunk that are not DnB anymore: Glitch Hop and Neuro Hop.
      Darkstep has no emo or punk elements. Its just dark and heavy DnB. Known artists are Switch Technique, SPL, DJ Hidden, Donny, Katharsys, Counterstrike. Kemal - Hostile is between Techstep and Darkstep, but is not the best example for Darkstep. Old Jump up is characterised by its bassline, here is another example of Old Jump Up: Aphrodite - Stalker. Nu Jump Up started with this track: Shimon & Andy C. - Body rock. Nu Jump Up is dancable and jumpable and good for partying, and thats why it used to be also called Clownstep. Then you have what I call Nu Nu Robotic Jump Up to refer to that more recent robotic sound that is mainstream right now. It is usually bad and repetitive, and even more clownstep than before. Here is a nice example: Subsonic - The Storm.
