Interesting video. The more I got into psytrance the more I started to wonder what goa actually was. It's interesting how psytrance is changing over time, even going back a few years the sound is very different, so it makes sense to think about goa as an earlier stage in the psytrance evolution.
It was the very start of it all.. Goa Trance is the beginning. it morphed from acid house, Acid techno then to Goa trance, Psy Trance & all the sub genres
Fun video, good to introducing the sound universe to newcomers. However I'd like to give some perspectives: - "Psychill" has a long history and is much, much more than just "slowed down psytrance. An album like Subsurfing - Frozen Ants from 1994 has the dub and world music influence, while the pure psychedelic Ambient of Ishq and the likes has captured the acid-crowd since the late 90's. Dakini Recs pioneered an acoustic World music sound, Interchill Recs went deep into some kind of balance between the urban and cosmic and Ultimae Recs were quite early with a very slowed down trance 4x4 beat. - I was missing Suomisaundi/Freeform Psy represented. These schools of Psy are super important to show upcoming artists "what Psy can be" so they don't fall into dogmatic traps. Psychedelic music should be explorative - the Suomi-people tend to be the most adventurous. - "Mainstream Psy" is not Psy in any possible way. "Psy"-stands for Psychedelic, meaning "mind manifesting" music, visionary music, music to let your spirit fly. Often with psychedelic tools like LSD, psilocybin, mescaline or 2CB. The music presented as "Mainstream Psy" is the very antithesis of trance-inducing music. It's cocaine-music, or vodka-music - music that triggers the monkey brain and inflates the ego. - I also missed "Tech-trance" or "Psy-tech" or whatever you want to call it. Some of the absolute biggest names within the scene since the earliest days have been balancing the "psy" with the "tech": Robert Leiner, X-Dream, The Delta, Spirallianz, Midimiliz, Koxbox, Son Kite etc.etc. Also a very popular "genre" these days, Zenon'esque, wouldn't have existed without above mentioned names.

Goa will always be my favorite thanks to astral projection and man with no name. A lot of the newer more derived stuff is too lacking in melody to really do it for me

Hi thanks for this fun and informative video. I've become aware that I'm quite lacking in my knowledge of musicgenres; videos like this are just what I need. Where should I go looking for trance music with hindu influences?
Hey, much Trance is affected by Hinduism! I found a mix: ruclips.net/video/VwXxwcRtdjA/видео.html hope you enjoy it, find the truth if its about spiritualism :)
Please include Suomisound, Zenonesque and Psytech. These genres have their own original sound and represented by hundreds of musicians. And, well, mainstream is not actually a psy trance - it"s a rotten pop vibe among the underground psychedelic music)
The track "bla bla bla" has a bassline, what is common in psytrance. By only using the psy trance bassline and putting "pop" sounds in it makes it mainstream/pop psytrance i think
You write that Goa is not a subgenre of psytrance, but it absolutely is. It's a special blending of acid, EBM and psychedelick rock with a vivid organic feel.
In my opinion, Goa trance has diverged from Psytrance and they are now fully separate genres, yet still close cousins. Of course I am heavily biased since I pretty much listen only to Goa, but I believe it is now as ramified as Psytrance.
It's a different kind of experience being created, but the aim is still to induce or stimulate a psychedelic trance. So in that way it's the same and it's psytrance ;P There's many sounds and tricks exchanged between the subgenres. Artists like Skizologic, Filteria, Nebula Meltdown among others are even actively meshing and mixing things up ;) Of which I'm happy, because they raise the bar for sound quality and mastering, which often lack in Goa trance.
Thanks a lot, it was very entertaining and informative! What about Phaxe, Morten Granau, Neelix and Ghost rider? Do they belong somewhere here? (I'm new to this genre)
