- Tonight's Edmonton Oilers Minnesota Wild game saw the mics accidentally pick up a hilarious chirp directed at Darnell Nurse. We'll talk about the hockey chirp and summarize the game on today's NHL hockey video.
Dear NHL, I would pay a premium price for a subscription service that lets us watch games with no announcers and only audio from mic’d ice and benches.
I would love that. Have it as a separate tier and be like “Sharks vs Ducks: Zegras Mic’d” and you hear him all game and what he says” people will buy that so quick.

I used to travel a lot in ND and stay in hotels a lot, and I remember once I was very close to Canada and there was a Canadian channel on TV that had only the in-crowd sounds. It was the best.

Generally, I think athletes to be pretty boring conversationalists. That includes during the games. I remember years ago they put a mic on a golfer. It might have been Larry Mize. It was surprising boring. There are exceptions. Of course the ultimate is Bob Ueker.

No, he got that contract the same way Makar got his. A phenomenal year where he blew up. They both got signed for $9 mill cuz of it. But the only difference is Makar is continuing to produce what he did that one year. Both where future investments for the team. Nurses just didn’t end up a $9 million player.

the Salary cap is bullshit when considering you get taxed more in Canada and maybe in some states in America. It makes players not want to play on those teams (also, weather, commute, etc.). Nurse's 9 mill is equivalent to Ekblad 7.5/ Hedman 7.8 in Flordia/Tampa. In the end, that 1mil difference changes everything on a teams Salary cap, and that goes for all players on Edmonton/any team in Canada.

Nurse's impact can be measured in the same breadth as one measures a 3rd pairing defensemans impact. Nonexistent.
Meanwhile the Greenway/Eriksson-Ek/Foligno line or GREEF line as it called routinely gets put out there to shutdown opposing teams top lines. Last season that line allowed only FIVE GOALS AGAINST at even strength over the course of the ENTIRE 82 GAME SCHEDULE. The next best shutdown line allowed over 10. No other line was under 10 against last year. They were the only one.
Since November 22nd the Wild have had the 3rd best defensive impact rating out of all 32 teams in the NHL. Which oddly enough coincides with the GREEF line being reunited after Greenway missed the start of the season due to an injury he had suffered in the playoffs last year.
Furthermore, his line completely shutdown McDavid and Draisaitl at even strength last night. Their lone points, assists each, came off the PP.
How's that for impact?
Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith say hello! Their contracts I think really started this trend, and while they arguably were two of the best defensemen in the league at the time, they really hampered the Hawks moving forward, though the Hawks were able to get 3 Stanley Cups during their run.

Nurse is definitely not a 9 mil player, never will be, his temper gets the better of him way too often. Evander Kane, who took a lesser salary, is a far better team player and worth more than what he's paid.
If you watch every oilers game. Almost every game nurse let's in a goal from his side or he makes a bad play leading to a goal against the oilers. He needs to be retrained, he's got too much ego for how he plays.

Everyone seems to forget Nurse signed 2 bridge contracts partially because the Oil were cap squeezed. He was great value for those 3 years. He bet on himself and had his best year in that contract year. He was in the early conversation for team Canada back then. So when the time came he got his big payday. Is it too much, yup. Has his play regressed, yup. Just offering some context. Still think he has the potential to play up to it for stretches. Let’s see come playoffs if he’s healthy.

A painful game to watch. The Oilers are in trouble. I think they miss Duncan Keith and they really need Kane. If Skinner gets injured, they're done. If they can't get Campbell going, they're done.
There needs to be a cap allowance for the teams highest on the no trade list.
In a cap system it's a huge disadvantage to be a team in a market where nobody wants to sign.
When Edm did have cap space Holland overpayed in both aav and term just to get ANYONE to sign.
All the internet chatter is about "WHY DIDN'T YOU SIGN __________?!!" "WE HAD $_________." Yeah, but nobody wants to play in Edmonton. So, you overpay and then are missing one or two contracts which could push a team like the Oilers over the hump to become contenders. Instead we all talk about the shame of wasting generational talent due to mismanagement.
It's not just mismanagement, it's a regional disadvantage. Edmonton and Winnipeg are the last place millionaire athletes want to live. The weather sucks, there's nothing to do, their wives hate it, there's multiple times less women to have affairs with etc... Anyway you cut it, there's little reason to take the contract unless you're bribed.
So you take the overpay and then the team can't sign the players they need to be anything other than mediocre even with generational talent on good contracts.
Darnell is worth 7m if he wasn't the only top pair D Edm has. So you overplay him and burn him out, he looks bad, but it's a larger problem.

Is it an over pay relative to his performance so far in the 2022-23 season and peers in 2022-23? Yes.
But is it a bad contract? Can’t be answered in Dec of 2022. Which is less than 3 months into the 8 years.
Nurse took a very team friendly contract after his ELC and a was bridged at a lower number than his value with his extension as the GM worked out the cap hell.
His $9.25M cap hit will not look so bad half way through as more players will well exceed that figure and the cap significantly goes up by then.
That figure secures atleast one D man long term as a core member and is paying him back for holding out with his extension. Factoring that in it’s not so bad.
Currently 7th highest paid D man. But halfway through he likely won’t be top 10. Who knows how far down he’ll be. Karlsson halfway through is still highest paid D man for example. He is also -82 but is .80 points per game. Nurse is +49 but .41 points per game.
Nurse is significantly better at stopping plays and brings a lot to the team besides points. Again it’s not so bad factoring everything in.
No matter which way you look at it. No Oiler should get more money than Mcdavid and Draisaitl. Nurse gets good # because of Mcdavid and Draisaitl. He is a B grade D and would be a 3-4 D at a contending team. 6m is the max for Nurse.
According to advanced analytics, Nurse has essentially no value as a player.

He had them in the perfect situation, Oilers defense was horrid at the time and the only thing they had was nurse. Defenseman were hard to come by..They really couldn't afford to lose him and his agent exploited that fact. They lost Larson and Klefbom was injured. Without Nurse we'd be back to having no defense at all completely wasting valuable time

The problem with nurse is his plus/minus. If a goal scoring defensman gets you 25 goals a year then great. The problem being is he allows just as many goals in on his net. He is actually not very good defensively. playing on the supercharged power play with McJesus and Draisaitl. his plus minus for this season should be high than 11. Now you can argue that goaltending is a factor sure, but in his first 500 or so games his plus minus is 49. Compared to someone like Ray Bourque in his first 500 games who also had some goalie issues in those years playing in the same division with NYI and Montreal. Bourque had a plus minus of 250 through his first 500 or so games. Nurse is not a defensive defensemen. I think he misses way too many assignments on the back end, allowing other players to carve up the goalies.
