    Agree completely, as a guy who does a lot of flippy tricks I also enjoy a wider wheelbase, I figured it out when I was a young kid about the trucks making a difference with wheelbase, somehow though throughout youthful ignorance I never figured out that the boards themselves had the mounting holes space differently from deck to deck. I'm sure this would have helped me tremendously back then but at least I have this knowledge now

    Thunder 147 lights on a Indy titanium baseplate is the best truck I've ridden by far for me.
    Keeps the Wheelbase almost the same, got the perfect in between height and the nice baseplate slide of an indy with the responsive and fast popping feel if a thunder. I don't know why not more people do it but it kinda eliminates the weaknesses of both trucks and only keeps the good things about them.

    Thanks for the videos Ben I learned a lot.
    After watching these I paired my anti hero with some venture lows and liked them better than when my indys were on them. I’m also 6’2” so I enjoy a wide wheel base, feels more roomy with my flip tricks

    I’ve been skating a Politic deck my buddy gave me because he didn’t like the concave and the wheelbase.
    It’s very similar to the Alien Workshop decks I usually ride. I first put on a pair of Indy’s (which is what my buddy sk8’s) and it immediately felt very heavy and didn’t have much pop.
    I then put on a pair of Thunder 147 highs and the difference was night and day. It felt so much lighter and the pop was explosive.
    I recently picked up a AW/Dino Jr. collab deck for my spring setup but this time I decided to go with a 8.38 and a pair of Thunder 149’s.
    It will be my first time skating something wider than an 8” deck as I usually would sk8 a 7.75 to a 8” deck.
    My main reason for switching is I’m looking for more stability when skating transition and ledges.
    I’m 43 years old now dealing with chronic lower back pain and nerve damage in my abdomen from when I had my appendix removed so I’m taking it easier these days but I still keeping pushing because it’s my own form of physical therapy.
    Normal exercise (push ups, sit ups etc..) is to painful but skating keeps me active and my mind sharp as chronic pain often leads to depression.
    Live long and sk8 on!!! 🤙

    I think you've helped me solve the riddle on why switching boards is a nightmare for me. I always lose half my tricks and sometimes gain a new one out of nowhere.
    I'm 5 10, probably average leg length. I love 14 inch wheelbase on Ace trucks which bring it in even more. I switched to a Polar from a Business and Company which has a narrower but longer tail and an extra 1/8th inch wheelbase. Absolutely wrecked my skating.
    If BandC is done, I'm going Toy Machine from here on out for the stubby tails and short wheelbase. Thanks man, really helping stop wasting time with this

    I agree on the switch 360 flip tip. I relearned them recently and I tend to do them easier off of the tail. The night I relearned them and landed several I was doing them off the nose, but I also was skating a creature. I have a deathwish now and feel like it's a bit easier off the tail. Not sure how much that change factors in, maybe I was just on point the night I relearned them.

    You know ive never really thought about it until I watched all 4 of your videos in a row. I actually have ten decks all from different companies but the same width 8.25. And ive noticed that I like to switch between em kinda like you do. I also switch between Thunders and Indies as well. But now I understand why some combos feel better for ledge and some combos feel better for flipping the board. Its funny that at 34, and almost 21 years of skating ive never really thought all that much about my wheelbase...lol

    Really like this wheelbase series, made me rethink some things. Product review on the shop deck is slow because even though it’s been a really nice warm winter on the East Coast, I’ve only been able to get out a few times, like three. So far though, really like it. But most importantly, I love these new Thunder trucks. You’re right they grind on metal better than Indies. They are new however, but I think you’re right, as a guy who works with metal on planes, probably harder. Lighter and lower, and I
    Ike the way they look

Hey I’m riding an 8.5 mainly because I have a size 11 shoe and it feels comfy but I was thinking about sizing down to a 8.25 so I can get a little more tech. What are your thoughts? Thanks dude!

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Matt. I think you will have a considerably easier time flipping an 8.25 but it will feel very skinny for the first little bit. I just went down to a 8 from an 8.25 and it feels tiny!

    • @skatermattc2
      @skatermattc2 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your reply Ben. Loving the 8.25 with the 14.25 wheelbase. Much easier to flip but still comfy in transition.

  • @tresfordays9644
    @tresfordays9644 2 года назад

    I skate 8.25 and I recently went from Zero to Primitive cause I wanted to try one finally, the Zero is 14.25 and the Primitive is 14, and I noticed that because of the mellower pop on the primitive I had to adjust the timing of my Ollies and other tricks, especially nollie, but once I figured it out I noticed I have some more control when getting into grinds on the box or rail, but my timing for some of my favorite tricks like kickflip board slide, kickflip bs 50-50, kickflip bs nose slide is completely off and still having trouble finding them, on the Zero board the pop is quicker and a little steep so I could flip the tricks sooner to get the grind, but am having trouble finding it, can’t tell which set up I like more, I like the fast response of the Zero board, but I like the more mellow and control of the primitive board

  • @thejoeygaden
    @thejoeygaden 6 лет назад +9

    So I’m kinda like you, 35 year old looking to get back into skating. Right now I have a 7.75 with thunder trucks that someone gave me. I rode Indy’s when I skated back in the day. I am going to buy a new deck in the 8 or 8.125 size. So I’m debating between Indy hallow with forged base plate 139 or thunder 147 probably hollow or lights whatever. All I skate now days is just ledges and flat bars and flip tricks.
    So my question is if you could only ride 1 set of trucks, would you choose Indy or thunder? Also have you or planning on trying some of those hollow with forged baseplate Indy’s?
    Thanks man. Appreciate your channel. Getting me motivated to get out and skate

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 лет назад +5

      Joey Gaden I'm dying to try some hollow forged indy's but I need to cut back on my spending. If I had to choose one truck it would be thunders but it's not why you might think. The reason is because it is way harder for me to find decks that work the way I like it with indy's. I need a really steep deck for indy's and that seems to be harder to find. I prefer indy's over thunders but only slightly but I can ride thunders on almost any deck.

    • @thejoeygaden
      @thejoeygaden 6 лет назад +2

      Ben Degros ok. Yeah I set this board up for my son. I’ve noticed that since it’s small I’ve been able to get most of my flip tricks back. Just want to keep the momentum going when I get a new set up. Kinda leaning towards the forged Indy’s but with all my flip tricks coming back just wondering if it’s the lower thunder or wheelbase that’s helping. Thanks

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 лет назад +4

      It could be both. If you like the feel of the thunder pop you might want to consider an 14.38 wheelbase deck for indy's.

    I hope you see this because I need some help with this topic.
    I got back into skating after a pretty long break but I cant find a setup that feels good and makes skating enjoyable. When I stopped skating I was pretty small compared to now (193cm, 6,3 foot). And now everything feels weird. My board feels like it has no pop what so ever and almost every deck feels like it has a short tail. I didn’t quite understand some of the parts of your video because I am not used to all the Inch measurements.
    I was amazed how well you could perform your flip tricks with your krooked board and would love to achieve something similar. I dont really have problems with tre-flips, kickflips or heelflips but they just feel and look really sketchy and are really low compared to what I was able to do.
    At the Moment I ride a Toy Machine board with following stats:
    Length: 32"
    Wheelbase: 14.25"
    Nose: 7"
    Tail: 6.75"
    And have some THUNDER 148 HIGH TITANIUM TEAM trucks on it which are 51mm high.
    I also have some Indy Stage 11 trucks if that helps but I want to buy a new deck and I am not sure what I should get. I mainly want to do flip tricks and cant afford new trucks at the moment. What could I do to achieve the effect of your krooked setup?
    Thank you so much for the videos and informations!

    Why do I feel like there's so much more technical information on skateboards now? Maybe it's because I actually have money now to buy what I actually want to skate or just the fact that I'm older and better at trying to solve problems. Who knows... I know skating as a kid it was pretty much throw whatever board you could get ahold of together and skate it. If a part felt like crap you'd just sort of see if a buddy liked whatever it was that you didn't like and trade.
    On a side note as a carpenter of way too long... I definitely appreciate your analogies.

      Filippo Lescai that's a tricky one if you are not able to see the deck in person. I have noticed that a lot of krooked and real decks seem to be a bit more pointy. Some Element decks are pointy. I have also heard that some baker decks are pointy. Baker also has flat concave and deep concave boards too. I haven't tried a baker yet though but I'm sure they would be decent.

      Ben Degros I haven't try baker too.. when I was skating 7 8 years ago, there wasn't this kind of board for what I remember.. i was a lot into element chocolate and girl but none of them had.. I've try my friend board that is an element nyjah's pro diamond I think and it was very pointy.. was excellent the scoop was incredible and crook and over crook incredible too.. so I decided to buy one of these.. I'll try with an element! And let's see.. thank you so much as always! ;)

    Ben, Have you ever skated a Hammers or FA deck? These are two brands with which I am curious. I don't see too many skating them.

      b gab I have never skated either. I haven't seen a hammers deck before but every other kid and their dog is riding an FA deck around here.

      Ha. So the kids are doing the FA. Hard to figure out why they are into it other than the word "fuking" in the brand name. I think they have a young team too. Ill keep looking. Thanks for the input.

      FA is just the super trendy company at the moment. Skate companies come and go so we will see if they have staying power.

      Id like to see the sales numbers and demographics of who is buying from which companies now. Ive been out of the game for too long so I have no idea right now.

      Kaipo Canadian tire/best buy underground on marine drive in Vancouver. I was there at 7 am. You have to go there before 9am or after 9am from what I have been told.

      Only on the girl deck. The other two times took me a few tries. I'm slowly getting them back.

    Do people actually care about wheelbase though, I thought skaters would look at the deck size and the graphics printed on the underside of it when choosing which deck to buy ?
