The problem is, is that it turns out that many people find it extremely difficult to distinguish between "Politics done bad" or "Politics shoehorned in" on the one hand, and "Politics I disagree with" on the other hand.
I mean, how many comment(arie)s can you think of where someone complained about how the Politics was done in a game, but also stipulated that they otherwise agreed with the political message?
I mean, sure, I could think of examples where the Politics were indeed done badly or were shoehorned in, even a few of Politics I otherwise agree with, but when for example people complain that _Doctor Who_ has gotten so much more blatant with its Politics in recent years, I *know for a FACT* that this is in no way born out by actual earlier seasons of the show. Not by the post-revival late-2000s era, and certainly not by Classic Who.
Same goes for Comics, by the way. I mean, have you ever *read* 1960s X-Men Comics?

As someone who does believe that "all media is political," I COMPLETELY understand. Politics is not something you can just shoehorn into a video game, movie etc. You have to build around that political idea without sacrificing anything that will make people want to come back to it. The Metal gear franchise has tons of politics in it. But people don't mind because both the game and it's story managed to incorporate them smoothly without sacrificing the immersion. It has to be fun before it's political. To recycle that quote from Reggie Fils-Aime: "If it's not fun, why bother?"

Ah, it seems that you have met your end. Ah, what a pity. You know I, I don’t feel too bad about it though, after all if it weren’t me, it would’ve just been one of the others I guess… I’m honestly just glad to be out of those air ducts. You know it’s… it’s not easy for a hippopotamus to fit up there… and… not easy to get down either. I’m not as young as I used to be as you can see, I used to be able to do all sorts of things, you’re young, you’re vibrant, you have that sort of pep in your step. Ah, it reminds me of a conversation I was having with one of my good friends Orville. We were having a nice picnic one day. I believe it was summer? Oh, perhaps it was… was it the fall? Yes, yes, it was the fall because the leaves had turned already. But I said to Orville, I- I says, “Orville, I have a story to tell you.” And Orville looked at me, you know, kind of odd and- and said, “Well what’s it about?” I- I said to him, “Not every story has to be about something Orville. Sometimes a person just wants to talk, why does it have to be a story?” I said to him. He just looked at me and he said, “Well y-y-you said you had a story.” You know, he was quite right, I did in fact. I told him I had a story. I suppose if a person just wants to talk, it’s best to not announce that you’re tellin’ a story. Tellin’ a story does come with its own pressures and expectations I- I suppose. After all, if you’re just talking to a friend then, there’s no more expectations then if you were talking into the wind. Words… by themselves are not expected to carry… aren’t expected to stick. But if, you know if you announce that you’re tellin’ a story well then… there better be a point to it all. No one wants to sit and listen to someone ramble on and on and on with absolutely no end in sight. So, you know, it’s- it’s good to be mindful that when you tell someone that you’re about to tell a story, that you have something to say. Tellin’ someone that you’re gonna tell a story is tantamount to asking them to stop what they’re doing, and pay attention. You’re basically saying “hey, hey, hey buddy, stop everything, stop what you’re thinking, I have a solution to everything.” And well, I didn’t really have any story to tell. In- in hindsight I probably just misspoke when I said that I had a story. I think it would’ve just been better to tell Orville that I had something to tell him rather than tell him that I had a story, but you know e- even then it might’ve put too much importance on the whole thing. Either way it was quite a nice day. I remember, I remember that we were drinking tea.

Pong minimalist approach was not made by the choice of the developer. They wanted to add sprites but the one with money thought it was good enought as it was without the sprites. Because he didn't want to invest more than he already did on the game. So yes ping pong had politics build into is design. Is minimalist art style a reminder when game where seen as disposable electronic toys push in barebone condition to maximize profit. I hate the "fiction = reality" argument so much! It's true that fiction influences reality, but it won't change someone into something they're not. Hypnosis can't even do that. (The rest of this comment is just me ranting)
There was a case in which two high schoolers who claimed to be inspired by the movie Scream murdered a classmate. The kicker is that Scream outright says that movies don't make people kill: "Now Sid, don't you blame the movies. Movies don't create psychos; movies make psychos more creative!"
And that's a good summary of how media effects people. If they have it in them to do something they might draw inspiration from fiction when it comes to how they do it, but fiction won't drive them to do it if they don't already have it in them. This extends to no-fiction too, but I have to stop trying before I stress myself out.

This "fiction = reality/fiction != reality" argument applies on a case by case basis. If someone faps to cartoon child porn and lolicon, then they're still a pedophile, but because someone plays as a Nazi in a video game doesn't mean they'll become a Nazi or be okay with them in the real world.
In some cases, a thing is just as dangerous to be okay with in fiction as it is in real life, and in other cases a thing is much more/less dangerous in one situation or the other. Pedophilia for example is wrong in both fiction AND reality because if a pedo can't get enough cartoon child porn, they may actually go rape a real kid.
But murder in fiction means nothing, whereas murder in real life is fucked up.
Basically, if a thing or idea done in fiction can also cause the person to want to do said thing/idea in real life, then the idea is dangerous in both fiction AND reality.

Tetris is actually a deep dive into classism. See the lowest class, bottom of the stack, does all the work to start the society (stack), but eventually they are simply left on their own as the focus heads higher up the stack until eventually it's nearly impossible for the lowest part of the stack to become the de facto top yet again.
And as the one arranging society, a stand in for government, what do you sacrifice the moment you get an unfavorable piece? You use it to plug the only hole leading to the bottom, sacrificing those down there from ever making a line again and focus on ensuring only the top of the stack can make lines. Thus the bottom is left unable to fulfill their purpose while still being expected to support all of society.
And don't even get me started on how you always need the "straight" piece to solve everyone's problems!

@Blade0fKha0s The politics of Bioshock are about the choices and consquences of creating an ANcap society.
It is not "this is ancapistan, isn't it a shithole?! You need Democracy and governors and regulation! Now listen to the Big Daddy tell you about the value of the Federal Reserve for 15 minutes."
It is instead dropping you in this world and seeing what and how things went wrong first hand and giving you a choice on what to do next. That's philosophy overtaking Politics.
Insisting that ones stance is the right one is politics but questioning the very nature of a stance as it regards to human nature is philosophy.

It is so succinct, but so perfect; brevity really is the soul of wit. If I tried to express the same thing, I would ramble for a whole paragraph. Probably say something like, people who are faking outrage to defend some cause, are just doing it to score points and get attention. If you're defending someone from something that does not bother them, you're not doing them a favor. By taking attention away from their real needs, you are making things worse for them, for your own benefit.

But the House Elves themselves hated the idea of freedom and were content to being servants with Dobby being the exception since his former master was an abusive asshole. They others never asked for help but Hermione continued on with it thinking that the wizards and house elves themselves were being indoctrinated to believing in the status quo despite the fact the house elves keep telling her to stop it.

Reminds me of when people started getting offended on the behalf of Mexicans over the sight of Mario wearing a sombrero in Super Mario Odyssey. Or similarly, when people got offended on the behalf of Native Americans because Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was supposed to allow for Mr. Game & Watch to have an attack where he performs a tag-team move with a Native American. *Let me repeat that:* These crazy people got offended on the behalf of people who were not offended simply over the fact that Mr. Game & Watch and a Native American could be depicted *working together* in harmony for, like, two frames of animation. Showing different people putting aside their differences and working together was "offensive". I can't be the only one who remembers these things happening.

I remember when yelling at people for being "ableist" was trendy for a while. Being mentally disabled myself, I've had to tell quite a few warriors to fuck off.
The thing is, they aren't actually defending anyone. They personally don't like seeing a thing, but are too afraid to take ownership of their own outrage. So they hide behind the "I, and many other people think..." shield - in this case, "the disabled".
But they rarely talk to the people they're supposedly defending. Instead, they use a hypothetical caricature of "the disabled" or "people who've lost loved ones to the Nazis". This way, the outraged warrior gets their shield without having to do any work, which gives them licence to use their keyboard swords to attack something they don't like.
(EDIT: I don't know what's up with RUclips. If I put a space between my paragraphs and it adds a second one. If I don't leave a space, it leaves it as a wall of text.)

Baldur's Gate is political, Saverock was starting an iron shortage that caused tension between the Baldur's Gate region and Amn. When you talk to the civilians, there are accusations and rumors of war. When you discover the conspiracy of the Iron Throne creating the shortage to monopolize on Iron, you put a stop to it from the bottom ranks upwards. However, the politics have absolutely nothing to do with the real world and are completely unique to the Forgotten Realms. It helps strengthen the lore and motivates you to complete the game without trying to change you as a person. Bravo Chris Avallone.

It's the Fallout New Vegas argument. It's not that politics, in a vacuum, are bad. Just look at Fallout New Vegas, you've got the NCR, House, Caesar's Legion, Raiders, the Powder Gangers, two semi-independent towns, other factions, with Benny making a play for it all you just so happen to bumble into in your quest to kill the man that tried to cap you. It's that when you do politics BADLY, you essentially make your story french kiss a shotgun.
Critical Drinker made a similar point about themes in movies in his review of Us. Many reviewers are trying to use thematics to excuse outright poor storyboarding and hamfisting a narrative home. Politics done well can add a great deal of depth into a work of art, but done poorly it creates a black hole from whence no good idea can escape.

I would say that far cry 5 actually did make a political statement about the modern state of things.
Throughout the game, you are occasionaly treated to snippets of International news on the car radios. The news paints a relatively bleak picture of International Relations going to shit, up to the point where before the final mission, Russia gets nuked by the United States and millions of people die.
Then the canonical ending, where Montana gets nuked, happens.
The entire time, most players aren't paying attention to those little snippets of news, rather, focusing on an internal, petty squabble within a small fraction of the nation.
If you pay attention to the loud speakers In John seed's region, He drones on and on about how the constant spew of garbage information makes us not pay attention.
Instead of, say, paying attention to China and France breaking down into riots, we're sitting here arguing about a president's taxes or a congresswoman having drug fueled three ways.
Ironically, the people bitching about FC5's politics are the types of people who it's warning about - they whine about the politics of a video game instead of talking about ACTUAL, day to day politics that DO affect us.
We could have stopped China if we could stop whinging on about a president's mean tweets. Serious shit is happening in the background, and we're so decadent, we aren't paying attention to what needs it. As Jake put it in the game - modern man is a soft, shameful shell of what it CAN be, and we won't be ready when SHTF.

The “all media is political” thing is such an annoying word game. In some branches of sociology, “political” means “influenced by a world view” and his was taken up by the activist disciplines (gender, race, ethnic and sexual studies) because if you don’t choose to use the attached definition of “world view” and just use it as people who speak English would use it, then you can validly say “everything is political.”
The reason they love this word salad game is that they can declare any media they don’t like as “evil propaganda” (as any media intended to express a view is propaganda in the broadest definition) because any politics,I.e. world views, that aren’t entirely in their favour are against them, any politics that are against you are an oppressive regime and oppressive regimes are EVIL.
The worst part about this redefining nonsense is when a scholar has redefined a word previously, expects you to have read everything they’ve ever published and just starts a paper using “up” to mean “down” and gets offended when you ask what the hell they’ve on about

Basically in a metaphor on how each of those shows handled the message of "protect the environment". Planet was preachy, dated and inaccurate and sometimes had weirdly dangerous messages the writer themselves personally shoehorned in with along side the episodes about recycling and pollution bad. Sonic SatAM had sonic doing cool things while protecting nature from the industrialized Robotnik where its message was purely allegorical.
The people sick of politics in gaming hate how the Captain Planet-like games are put on a pedestal by journalists and other voices that no longer speak for them and get sick of people saying "All TV should be like Captain Planet!"
The weasels advocating that everything is political ignore that people refer to Captain Planet and make it sound like their strawman opposition just hate Sonic SatAM and they at the same time swear they just want ALL games to be the Sonic SatAM of games...while clearly just wanting all TV to be Captain Planet because they have stakes in such.

25:09 Extra Credits uses the iron cross instead of the swastika because media with the swastika is banned in Germany, and they'd like their videos to be viewed everywhere.. At least that was their stated reasoning in one of their Extra History videos from way back when. Maybe their reasoning has changed, or maybe not, or maybe it's just habit now. I can't really say.

  • @LegosRock223
    @LegosRock223 4 года назад +42

    On the subject of the Iron Cross, the reason they use it instead of the swastika or Nazi imagery is because of German laws about the use of said imagery, which they discuss in a three-minute video corresponding with their Battle of Kursk series. They want to avoid using it out of fear their videos may be censored in Germany. There are two big reasons why I don't like this reasoning;
1.) It completely misses the point of the laws around Nazi imagery in the first place. While I fundamentally disagree with any laws that prohibit the use of any imagery, the law is specific in that it concerns the context of the image. For instance, the swastika is a religious symbol for some southeastern Asian people, as such its use there is permitted. It also protects the use of it in education, which is the point of their videos. Thus the concern over German law surrounding the imagery is nonsensical as German law would in no way impede the video as it is intended to be educational.
2.) The use of the Iron Cross as interchangeable for the swastika is contradictory to both the point of the video and their backtracking comment about why they care about video games enough to make the video in the first place. First, by using the Iron Cross interchangebly they are committing the same sin they are discussing in the video, except far more egregiously in my opinion. By using the Iron Cross as an example of hateful imagery they are spreading misinformation about the topic and giving people the wrong impression that the Iron Cross is Nazi imagery. Furthermore, they say one of the reasons they made the video was because the point of their channel is to have these complex discussions, but by using the Iron Cross in this way they display their incompetence for everyone to see.
Strangely enough, I think the use of the Iron Cross is less concerning if it was as simple as them not wanting to display the imagery because they don't want to offend people. At least then they wouldn't be hitting us the realization that a channel that produces historical education is incapable of understanding a law pertaining to the portrayal of history.

    @SuperCosmicMutantSquid 4 года назад +92

Hey, Mr. E. There are a lot of topics and videos that you've discussed over the years that usually end in a whole 'agree to disagree' feeling with me but this is one that really hits it home.
When people say they are tired of politics in media, it usually has more to do with media taking a stance against one side and one side only to the point where both sides are exaggerated to intolerable degrees. I think a good way to look at it is how well a movie like Joker did compared to a movie like Captain Marvel or Watchman. I compare these movies because Joker didn't advertise itself on its politics; that's what media sites did and they threw the movie under the bus in the process. But DESPITE this, Joker is slowly climbing to 1 billions in profit, WITHOUT China mind you, on its own footing and word of mouth.
In the cases of Captain Marvel and Watchman, CM was helped by Disney in getting all the advertisment and attention it needed and the media praised it but despite it's earnings the general audience couldn't care for it. Watchman, which is on TV, is doing TERRIBLY because it took Moore's story and shifted it in ways that even he didn't put into the original work. Oh, Watchman had some symbolism but the 'continuation' or whatever it wants to consider itself for this version has hamfisted the messages so much that people have been turned off and again, most of that has to do with the people in charge waving around the politics before actually getting people interested in the story. THAT type of political grand-standing is what kills interest and creativity and all around us you can see how people are reacting to it; they don't want it. They don't want it because 'they agree with the bad guys', they don't want it because nothing is being told. Nothing is being taught. Nothing is being conveyed. All that we're getting now are lectures; lectures from people who are out of touch from people who aren't in their bubble. Lectures from people who want a prize without doing anything to really deserve it.
And as for the WW2 analogies, lemme say this from someone who's grandfather was in the fight; what EC is trying to imply, that people who play games with Nazis or are given the choice to switch between POVs of them in games want to BE Nazis, is the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard and just one of many 'takes' that have been given by shitty 'game journalist' in the past five years. It does play into the whole 'OMGGGGGG, PLAYING GAMES WITH GUNS MAKE YOU VIOLENT!!!!' OR, going back to Joker, the whole idea that a simple idea can INSTANTLY turn an entire sub-culture into monsters the second the see it.
Remember how so many media outlets were running their mouths about how Joker was going to cause mass shooting sprees?
I don't hear bullets but I sure do hear cash-registers going off as Joker, as of the date posting this, is still making money.
And what exactly is EC trying to say? That games that do depict WW2 or other realistic events should not make notice of the antagonist of said side? All because they're under the impression that people will suddenly change their minds and go 'Oh, I wish the evil people had one instead!'. Where are they getting this logic from? Oh, wait. I know. The people they brought in who hate gaming, the people who make up the hobby and are instead trying to swing things so it makes it look like their POV is the only right one by painting all games as 'male, cis, straight, white sexist, racist, bigoted-' and it goes on and on. The biggest irony of this? I'm a Black woman and I've hated this type of talk even when Jack Thompson was saying this shit. The new breed here may think that what they say is 'different' only because they aren't Jack but it's the same inflammatory attitude but the thing that makes all of this so fucked up is that these are 'fellow gamers' who are saying this but from what they present, they make it clear that they aren't 'gamers' as they say they are, or at the very least aren't interested in the type of games that are popular with a certain sect of people and just assume that they're popular because the people who play them absorb nothing but the negative aspects of said game, even if that NEGATIVE is what they're (the players) fighting against.
tl;dr- EC just did the same strawman argument we've seen places like Polygon, Kotaku, and other soon to be defunct gaming news sites have been spouting out since 2013. The only question is why the hell they're so late to the catch when that bus took off long ago.

I learned about the CSI Effect in a forensics class.
There were people who were so convinced that the methods and tech used in the show were real that they would give terrible verdicts because “they didn’t collect enough evidence.” Even if the evidence collected clearly showed a person’s innocence or guilt, the jury would still be convinced that there should have been more because in CSI shows, they always manage to get everything.
Eventually, courts started to interview their jury members before starting a trail about the CSI show, if they’ve watched it, and if they believe whatever they see in the show. If they say “yes,” they’re excused because they would have a bias made from the show.
It’s a shock how a show like this could effect people THIS MUCH.

When we say we don't want politics in videogames, we don't mean we don't want game devs to never ever touch upon politics. I have no mouth and I must scream was definitely a game that clearly touched upon the human condition, and most people love that game. What we mean is we're tired of game devs bragging about how their game has a woman as the protagonist, even though we've had female protagonists in videogames for well over 30 years now. I'm sorry, but female protagonists in videogames really isn't something to brag about anymore.

From what I've researched: (and it's quite possible I'm sticking my foot in my mouth)
    1. James has resigned from, or is at least leaving, EC, it was announced on their Halloween episode, so things may get better after awhile both Dan and Matt are just the mouth pieces for James' research and possibly point of view. From what I've read from past "employees", for lack of a better term, James may be the rotten apple in the EC barrel. Good game designer, lack luster human being.
    2. The excess money that was crowd funded for Allison's surgery was confiscated by The Escapist, who were producing the show at the time. My understanding was that it was a part of their contract. It was one of the reasons EC left them.

Edit: Alright, I watched it. I agree with Enter on pretty much everything. Playing the bad guy in a video game doesn't mean you support them at all, or those ideas are normalized to you now.
People really need to separate fiction from reality. Also, the idea of everything being political is so stupid- a fantasy story involving a revolution isn't a commentary on monarchies, it easily can just be added for a good narrative. These kinds of ideas complete ruin the idea of escapism and try to determine the serious characteristics of people based on stuff that is by definition fiction.
Just let people have fun in some silly games without being called the worst.

A story about a political revolution in a fantasy setting is probably going to be at least unintentionally grounded in real-world political history - the makeup of the revolutionaries, the monarch's family/structure, how the monarchy presents their power, the methodology of the revolutionaries and the reactions of the monarchy - all often based of something political. Like, these things don't spring from a vacuum. That's what people mean when something is unintentionally political, that because a creator is influenced by their surroundings their work will include some of that. Political in this case doesn't necessarily mean government or even controversial politics. Pong can be considered political unintentionally because it is a player vs player game with a single winner - it's a competition but the fact that competitions are so prevalent that the first videogame(s) are competitive says something. It's not to say that every game can be extrapolated to some political statement, but it's mostly (like 99%) impossible for a creator to completely separate themselves from their surroundings when creating anything.
As for playing the bad guy not supporting them, I can see that in a WW2 game it makes sense for axis to be one side of a conflict. I think this is where the term "normalization" comes in - not to make them good or sympathetic, but to make them "meh." That you can be ambivalent in a historic shooter because there's little to no mechanical difference between either side. It's also not that nobody can separate fiction from reality, but with something like Nazis there's merit to not making them seem like just regular soldiers. I mean, most other mediums don't often make Nazis out to be people you cooperate with.

It's ridiculous. It's entirely possible for any piece of media to have no political bent - Skyrim has some political themes, but save 'Fuck the Thalmor', it very intentionally does not push any side, most obviously the Imperials and Stormcloaks, so that any player can comfortably choose either side.
Furthermore, the claim that any and all deep meaning is political is absolute rubbish. I could make a entire game exploring the deep and complex themes of immortality of the soul, life after death, and the relationship between the body and soul, discussed in Plato's Phaedo. And it would have literally nothing to do with politics.
