The best Vissi d´arte I´ve ever heard. This was beyond. She has extremely good technique and breath-control. That´s why she may put this amount of effort in her expression. It was breath-taking. Many singers will do this aria justice, but this was something else. Wow!
Karita has done a great job with all the roles she has done, and For the record they are not at all too big for her voice. she is grown up woman, and she has sang several smoler roles before big ones. I have seen her life, performing this song, and many others, Go girl!!!!!!!! i like her personality. She sings like an angel and swears like soldier!!
What I especially enjoy about this version is her musical/dramatic connection to the final phrase "Why, why God? Why repay me this way?" You sense Tosca's hurt and confusion.
I agree...most opera fans are so stuck on the past that they can't enjoy the beauty going on on stage today. Fleming gets harshly critiqued today..but wait like, 50 years, and she's probably be incredibly praised.
I'm taking my parents to see the 2009 Met opening of Tosca broadcast live in a local theatre - and i believe she is playing the lead role. October 10th 2 pm Atlantic Time.
Callas was adored precisely because of her voice was "fingernails on a chalk board". Probably the greatest singer of the 20th century. men included - with some 3 competitors. Her talent would have made her great in music even if she had been unable to sing & forced to choose another instrument.
Her legato line is so fabulous- those notes just soar and take off seamlessly. I have mixed feelings about the edge to her top register- powerful, but also a little thin compared to the rest of her range.
Now, now. Cannot stronger performances be found to challenge Mattila? Goodness knows Birgit must've been thinking of her herd in Skåne while presenting her farm hand Tosca on telly and Callas was long since devoid of man and voice. She was trained a bel canto expert whereas Nilsson trained herself an "I'll-squeeze-and-keep-the-voice-in-the-nose-at-all-cost-so-that-I-won't-get-tired" expert. If only Bertil had called Birgit just before the telecast and informed that one of the cows was sick..
The high note is actually just a Bflat, not a high C. And in this video you can see what's the trouble with her voice today - she did not watch out for the passagio, kept it way too wide which turns out to mess up your top. You can hear the Bflat being troubled even in this clip 12 years ago.
Also take a look to for Eugenia Moldoveanu's map.....she's also one of the greatest DIVA'S ever existed ....you must leasen her singing you will be impresed..or maybe you know her becouse she's also very popular...
I agree that despite the beautiful voice it's not a very idiomatic performance- why can't she stop rolling those R's? But she can be wonderful in Italian roles as evidenced by her Elisabetta in Verdi's Don Carlo (French Opera) which is available on DVD; the whole cast is unexpectedly spectacular (e.g. Waltraud Meier as Eboli.)
... Thank God we all lived through the late 90's. That is the ugliest outfit I've seen in years. On the performance, she's good here, but not wonderful. She's better now, I think. I actually hope to see Mattila's Tosca next year at the Met.
I got a terrible fright whe she sang "QUAAAAAAANTE MISERIE CONOBBI..."and this horrible "COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSI" with "voce di petto"....ok...different but i do not like her in this kind of roles,,,
The lyricism is diminished due her questionable legato. The b-flat is right from the throat and, as we now know, was how she managed her upper voice, shortening her career considerably.

I don't see any trouble. I don't know what you're talking about people. All I see is a fantastic performance. BRAVA!
absolutely stunning. never have i seen such emotion in a performance.
Just AWESOME!!! Absolutely brilliant, breathtaking goosebump singing!
imo - dare i say it- the most beautiful an thrilling voice out there tody.
Brava Karita!!!
Brilliant! We must be happy to have such a wonderful singer today. One of the best among living sopranos.

Magnifique ! veritable artiste. Une tres tres grande avec laquelle j'ai chanté deux fois. Quel souvenir inoubliable !

Hooahh! She builds to a great ending which counts in every song...

I don't know how people are judging that her voice is not big or too light. I'm sorry, but, it IS a big enough voice. I think she does a GREAT job!
WOW BELLA BELLA

She's scheduled to perform Tosca at Met in 09-10 season. I'm looking forward to seeing her.
hermosa
maybe because in Italian the R's are rolled... admittedly some of those R's there sound a bit Finnish once in awhile.
Incredible performance. Unfortunately the camera wandered terribly.
Strordinaria........

Mattila has a huge voice yes her piannissimi is not that good but she has a huge voice i will see her jenufa and im sure she will be awesome... brava
Best vissi d'arte eveeeeeeeeeerrrrrr!!!!! (after Callas, of course hahhah)
Does anyone know why PBS didn't film her "Salome" at The Met?
Her legato line is so fabulous- those notes just soar and take off seamlessly. I have mixed feelings about the edge to her top register- powerful, but also a little thin compared to the rest of her range.
they are about 10 years behind on fashion.. its true.

What's gonna happen on those high C's Floria has to sing if her mouth is that way on the Bb??? And this was 1997...
or should i say, emotion without the compromise of quality.
callas and price were amazing. but i'm also rather fond of fleming's rendition.
Listen to FLORENCE QUARTARARO, ANITA CERQUETTI

Try the same from Ghena Dimitrova
Maria Callas.
What IS she wearing?! I'm sure somebody already wrote that...too lazy to check.
you really didn't say that, did you? What do you think singers do on high notes.. sing with their mouth shut? If you do, get another teacher and fast!
i was left scared. sorry not to my taste.
Dramatic. Tempo just a little too fast.

she is finnish. what do you expect? ;) they are totally cut off from the west world by their own choice
why? do you want shallow interpretation and unstable vocal abilities to prevail in this world?
Tebaldi is better than Callas in this aria.
i think she was miscast in the role. barely made it through vissi d'arte.
i didn't like this performance at all. Why is she stressing all "R"s so funny. Quite naive acting; it sounds more like a soldiers' song.
