  • Guys!! We've been trying to get to this point in the shed build for what feels like months! We're on to the second roof!! This is a cedar shake roof that we install ourselves (always diy when we can) - we have a fun time installing it, and the overall project goes surprisingly fast. We'd love to hear your thoughts - what do you think about our shake roof? See any mistakes we made?
Cedar, with its deep roots in Japanese architecture, symbolizes not only endurance but also the natural beauty that has captured our hearts. We're paying a joyful tribute to this tradition as we lovingly craft and install each cedar shake. Watch in awe as these cedar shakes gracefully find their place, seamlessly blending modern construction techniques with timeless Japanese design principles.
At Building Modern, we're more than just a DIY couple; we're passionate creators devoted to the art of craftsmanship. This project embodies hours of dedication, teamwork, and a shared vision of merging contemporary living with the beauty of traditional aesthetics. 🪚🌿

Thank you!! We took your advice on cutting on the proper side for the miter - I think that’ll show up in the next few parts of this series. Thanks for watching! We’re super happy with the results 😁

Looking good. Definitely a good idea to stop when you were cross cutting the shingles at the table saw using the fence. It's easy to tilt the workpiece which will send the corner of the wood into the blade which will catch it and cause it to kick back which can pull your hand into the blade. You can do that operation using a cross cut sled or miter gauge, but the miter saw is a better option for what you guys were doing!

Thank you - great note! Everyone pay attention to the pro - don’t do that on a table saw! 😅

Thank you so much for this series. You two have literally improved my life. Before, i would put off projects because i felt i didn't have the time to finish them. Watching you, i changed my process and work on small parts of projects every day. Additionally, I've put more effort into creating things the are stylized and beautiful rather than just functional. Consequently, my mood has improved overall and i have things i love that I've built rather than just things that serve a practical purpose. So... Thank you.
On another note, i love your relationship with one another. You both have your quirks and hangups, but i see that both of you recognize the strengths and weaknesses in those traits. In this series, I've seen you both defer to the other's judgement in areas where you recognize their strengths are. This is a a key to making a lasting relationship with differing personalities. I've also seen you get annoyed with each other and work through it. Keep the fire. You're both awesome, but i think more awesome together.
