I love watching how it turned out from you spring wrap, so big. I honestly never heard of an air layer until I watched you, I absolutely can't wait to give it a try. Great job, glad it turned out so good. Y'all are so incredibly inspiring.

Thanks! Definitely give it a try! Keep in mind, air layers aren’t a 100% success rate, so try it first on branches you might prune off anyway. It’s super neat though - extra trees!! 😀

got my Jordan japanese maple a few days ago :D Such a good looking tree. I Might try Air Layering if its gets bigger. How fast is your Jordan growing?

Thanks for watching!! We have a few Jordan’s and they vary somewhat in growth rate depending on sun exposure. In general, they’ll grow about 8”-12” in a normal year. Some years, they’ll put out whips where they’ll grow 2-3 feet on one or two branches. We’ve found the best sun exposure seems to be around 4-6 hours or morning sun with afternoon shade. They are absolutely fantastic in the Spring!!
Edit: the air layer should grow at about the same rate. This year, it won’t push any as it was taken off the tree, but I expect the same growth pattern from it once it’s more established next year.

    Deer problems?

We thankfully haven’t had any major deer problems, even with our hostas. There are some coyotes that come through our property at night every now and then, so maybe they have something to do with keeping the deer away. Since we’ve been here, we’ve had deer take a nibble on two japanese maples in one night, but that’s the only time we’ve seen evidence of them in our area.
