A brief description of a few yellow Japanese maple cultivars. The "Ryusen-type" maple that I forgot to give a name on is Acer palmatum 'Dragon Master's.
Wow what a collection!!! I have Jordan planted in the ground last year. And I just realize how gorgeous it is, so I dug it out of ground today and put it in pot 😄
Amazing collection, i am inspired. I have only 5 maples in pots, mostly reds. I can't wait to add yellows to my collection. Great videos 👍 cheers from SoCal
Some lovely Acers/Maples there. I took some Japanese Maple cuttings on 30th March and have just made a new video on their progress. I would love to try growing them from seed one day. I always like to get a surprise variety of JM and enjoy seeing them return every year after the winter. All the best.
I love that you can move them around by keeping them in pots. I think it’s too cold here in Ontario to over winter in pots so I plant them in shelter places. Love your varieties.
Great video was looking for yellow maples as I’m new to maples and only have green and red variety’s. Have ordered a bihoo can’t wait for that to arrive 😍
@@maplecollector4398 BTW how old is your summer gold? I just purchased a one-gallon baby from maple bros and gonna put it in a pot in full sun. I am in 6B area. How's it doing on the hottest days?
I don't have 'Summer Gold'. I have a sport of 'Summer Gold' called 'Mendocino Sunrise'. It should have the same resilience and that one does well in the summer. My summers are very mild though.
Great video ! Its so hard to find images of what a variety is going to look like when it gets bigger. Maples have those teenage-like awkward years after their "baby" stage, but it still gives you a peek of their adulthood habit.....so i really appreciate what your doing. You have a beautiful collection !!! New subscriber. Thanks for all your work.
Love the video. I’m a big fan of maples especially Japanese and looking forward to more. Would appreciate more info on pot growing, pruning, soil composition, in short any and all aspects of your maple collecting hobby. Thanks!
Thank you! I do plan to cover all of that but right now is when many of the maples look their best. I want to focus on their physical features now and eventually cover my growing procedures during the seasons when I can give examples. I will cover some techniques soon though.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you think that Autumn Moon is also a yellow maple. I was thinking of putting Jordan near it but I don't want to if they look very similar.
I would say that it's different enough that you could put them together. Autumn Moon can get some yellows in it depending on sun exposure but it's nothing like Jordan. It's more orange.
I apologize for the slow reply but Aoyagi, Beni hoshi, Shidava Gold, Flavescens, Yellow Bird, Black Beard's Gold and Bihou are all excellent for yellow fall color. A Bihou in bright or dappled shade is the most intensely yellow cultivar out there. Yellow on yellow!
So would an orange dream be the best yellow for shade then in your opinion? I have a spot which is basically full shade at the back I'm looking to put something for contrast with a manyo no sato and a red pymgy which get more sun further forward. Currently have a shiraz in as of last september but I'm not sure if the colour will be best without any sun, and may not show up quite as good contrast with a manyo no sato and red pygmy. Any other recommendations for something to contrast those two in full shade?! Thanks, love your collection videos!
Hello, you have beautiful maple;) However I do not understand English very well, can you put subtitles below the maple to know their variety? Thanks very much Have a good day
Beautiful collection of Japanese maple trees!!!!!! Can you please tell me the name of your YELLOW Japanese maple tree AT THE FRONT PAGE OF YOUR RUclips VIDEO??? Thank you very much 😊 Barry
I will do a video on that in the winter, when repotting my trees. I want to be thorough and somewhat scientific about that subject. It's an important topic and I want to make sure that I cover all of the bases.
Not usually. It's one of the more sun tolerant cultivars. Don't be surprised if it burns a little the first year though. Sometimes it takes a year or two for them to establish and adapt to a full or afternoon sun position.
I'm starting a collection of Japanese maples but in my hardy zone of 4b there's not that many. I wish I can plant them in a pot! The first maple I got is called the "North Wind" Korean hybrid that can within harsh MN winter. Let me know if you can think of anymore Japanese maple in my zone. Beautiful collection by the way and thank you for sharing them. Love, love!
Glad to here that you're going to start collecting. While I don't have any experience growing maples in your climate, I do know that you are limited with varieties that can be planted in the ground. The entire "Jack Frost" collection from Iseli is a good place to start. 'North Wind' is one of these. There are a few other species that might work but generally anything below zone 5 is too cold for Acer palmatum cultivars. There are some tricks that others in the hobby use, to get their trees through winter but I don't have the experience to recommend any of them. Have fun collecting!
I'm looking at planting an Aureum or a Jordan in my backyard. It faces west and gets early to afternoon full sun. What are the pros and cons of each? I've heard the Jordan is more sun tolerant but I feel the Aureum leaves are thicker and look a lot better, more yellow. What do you think?
That location is too hot for 'Aureum', in my experience. Even 'Jordan' might burn a little the first year or two but it eventually adapts. This will vary a bit depending on the heat index of your area.
We don't have to worry much about heat here but wind can be an issue. Each cultivar is different. I have to move mine around until I find a spot that works. If a maple gets fried because of too much sun, I will move it to a shadier spot.
@@maplecollector4398 I got a Dragon Master from MrMaple this last Fall. It let out one late spurt of leaves, then lost them all immediately. The trunk and branches turned black but don't look dead. Did yours do that?
Bonjour , vous avez de magnifique érable ;) Cependant je comprend pas très bien l anglais , pouvez vous mettre des sous titre en dessous des erable pour savoir leur variété ? Merci bien Bonne journée
They certainly don't need to be planted in the ground. I will say that they are usually easier to care for in the ground but don't let that keep you from putting them in pots. Just make sure that you use soil that drains well.
If you purchase a 1 gallon tree, put it in a 3 gallon pot. In the winter of 2022, move it up to a 5 gallon pot. Once it's in the 5 gallon pot for a year, you can move it up to it's final 20 gallon pot, with soil that drains well. The roots will need to be pruned and the soil replaced after being in the pot for about 3 years. This should be repeated every two years after that.
@@maplecollector4398 Thanks for the information. So, if my goal is a six foot tree, I would eventually need a 20 gallon pot? The same gallon pot if I keep it at 3-4 feet?

That Jordan is awesome
I just finally ordered a 'Hot Blonde' JM and I'm hoping it likes the sun (as they claim) better than others here in zone 6b PA. Thanks for sharing.
Don't expect it to handle full sun the first couple of years but it should settle in eventually.

I'm not sure how much color it would have in full shade but that's the one I would try. At the very least, it would be a nice shade of light green.

Are you looking for a yellow tree for shade or for sun? The amount of sunlight has a lot to do with how yellow a tree stays.
Do you have a video about the soil you use for your maples and care? thank you

Great collection of Maples in a compact area. Will you have enough space when these trees get more mature ?.
The great thing about maples is that they can be maintained to whatever size you want. I also give trees to my family and friends every year.

Acer palmatum 'Ruby Ridge' appears to be triploid.
