Pat you are awesome dude. Transitioning out of the military was one of the hardest things I've ever done. They really don't do a good job at helping you adjust to civilian life and I struggled for 4 years. The hardest part of transitioning to a civilian job was the lack of leadership, and work ethic of the people around me. It is absolutely mind blowing how some companies still operate. Multi-tasking and efficiency are hard to find. Zero team atmosphere or having each other's back. People show up late/call off all the time, no one gives a shit about doing a good job or doing it the right way. We had so much structure in the military. Everyone had a job to do and you knew the job of those above and below you. In addition, when those above me asked my opinion or wanted to know about a problem, you were honest and the problem got fixed, because if a problem wasn't fixed, people died. In the civilian world, a lot of higher ups ask your opinion but then aren't ready for the honest feedback. I got let go from the first job I had after I got out because I "wasn't a good fit for the company". The only thing I did wrong, was tell my foreman the truth when he asked, and he didn't like hearing the feedback. I didn't even do it disrespectfully. I identified a problem and even gave suggestions on how it could be fixed. Let go 45 days later at my evaluation because I was the only person who ever spoke up. Was a wake up call for me. The other hard part was that the qualifications didn't exactly transition either. So all I could say was "I have experience with something similar. But they never allow you to learn on the job or anything else. A lot of employers don't understand how adaptable we are or how fast we can learn something to get the job done.
I got out 6 years ago, happily married, managed to go through university without government help and got a business degree. Now we have a startup business and living in Australia. Life is great. Would I ever go back as a commisioned officer? No way! As far as I see, the biggest issue in military is a lot of toxic leadership, and overall a bad culture. I hope things are getting better.. Before I ETS'd They told me the economy was bad, and there is no jobs.. They said you are not going to fit in easily and this place is your "home" Best thing I can say, I enjoy the freedom as a civilian, it took me 1 year to deprogram, I am a happy boy, I believe in Jesus=God. Anyways, God bless and you can do anything with God's grace, peace.

The office politics Tai Chi in military organizations (don't know about PMCs) is insane, thought of joining my country's military but eventually realized that being stuck in something like that is just a drain on your brain
@Brandon Martin Crabs in a bucket mindset. They are too scared of competing with people in the real world for life and income. Government offers the stability in exchange for a miserable life (slave). But, that's not to say with a good mindset and upright values, you can achieve and enjoy a great military carrer. Although I think its rare to find, as life is really hard around a lot of people who don't seem to be smart.
Got out in 2013 due to an IED blast and injuries I sustained. Frankly I’ve been struggling since then. This could be a good topic for you to cover as well. All the best.

Would have never guessed this guy was Army. I got out in 2017 and I finally found a passion in psychology and the fire service. Working at getting my degree, working in human services for people with disabilities and volunteering my time in a fire dept. It ain’t easy but life is so much better because of the military and I will always be grateful and in debt to it. Great video Pat!

I served for 24 years with multiple deployments and recently retired. It's not as easy to transition as you think. It's a complete mind shift that takes a bit of time to get used to and there are things I still struggle with. Although the military has helped me develop knowledge and skills, thank God for being an Entrepreneur because the knowledge and skills I have developed during that process (although different than the military) have helped me stay focused.

One problem I see is when the military spouse is so comfortable living the military life, the dreams of the person serving is not a priority. My friend was miserable for years and wanted to open up a fight gym but his wife is constantly giving him crap about getting out
Yes and no. I am a former Avionics Specialist. I stopped bothering with aircraft once I got out of uniform (the civilian FCC test and ongoing requirements were too expensive given the relatively low salary/return you got for it.) I did however take all that electronics training and turn that into a job as an electrician (maintenance, not journeyman), which led me back to being an electronics tech, which led to an EE degree, which... ...however, as time goes on, your skills have to adapt. And change. And improve. And sometimes, where you end up is nothing like where you started.
