      anas ahmed I think it goes 50/50. When doing American accents, Brits say their "Rs" too hard. Renee Zellweger (sp?) did a horrible accent in Bridget Jones lol

      I could argue it's easier for Brits to do that type of accent. If you listen closely, a lot of the vowel sounds are similar and the consonants are less harsh than a generic American accent.

      Ah, someone finally said it really well. YES, you can hear some British coming through, but he's still amazing and does seem like a completely different person. Plus, I had no idea when I watched The Wire that he was not American. I remember criticism that some of the actors from NY or other places weren't getting the Baltimore Black accent, but I don't know the difference, so to me he sounded fine. It's only now that I can hear the British here and there know he's not from the US.

      It might have something to do with the fact that American accents are kind of everywhere, american cinema and television is way more wide spread, and produced at higher levels that English or British media, so maybe because people are constantly hearing it, it's easier to pick up on.
      I'm Australian and I find that American accents are so much easier to imitate than British, even though Aus and British accents are so close.

      the most likely reason IMO is Motivation - foreign actors have strong
      reason to become skilled in American accents (ie getting american roles) -
      and work hard to learn them - often using american films and tv shows to
      practice their accents
      speculating further - until the last few decades - americans have been parochial in outlook - and haven't seen much of british & other english speaking fare - so they (errr - we) aren't as familiar with the accents and must struggle more to master them

    • @davemattia
      @davemattia 3 года назад +7

      I have to very politely disagree with you about Hugh Laurie. Let me explain: It took me about two episodes to realize that he was a Brit or an Aussie - and then by episode #3, I was certain he was a Brit. I don't know, maybe I have some weird special language talent or something, but he sounds like he is not FROM anywhere in the USA. For a few seconds I thought....hmmmm.....maybe Canadian Maritime, but no. His accent - like a lot of faked American accents - is far too neutral - so "nowhere" - that it's a dead giveaway. I also think that his concentration on the not-nuanced accent might limit his acting range -- which is great for that part... and he always does most of his acting with his face anyway. Yes, it's a perfect American accent - but something isn't right. It's like a store-brand dishwashing liquid. Does that make sense? He sounds like he is from Nowhere, USA. Anyway, I'm the idiot for not knowing who Hugh Laurie was before House - lol.

      It also helps that the General American Accent is rather easy to learn as it is pretty 'neutral' and comparatively nondiscript. I mean, most people even slip into something similar to General American when they sing, even without knowing it! Mick Jagger, George Michael, and Adele just to name a few notable examples. It makes sense when you think about it; the basis of GA was literally made by the media in the early 1900's so that personalities wouldn't sound like they're _from_ anywhere and therefore appeal to the largest demographics. The history and use of the modern standard american dialect is actually really interesting topic.

    • @johneyon5257
      @johneyon5257 8 лет назад +9

      LOL!!! - hardly - GA is not the "natural" accent you seem to think it is - haven't you noticed that british children sing with strong british accents - and so do british non-singers too
      nor do british singers "slip" into GA unknowingly - those who want to make a singing career - and are concerned about being understood in America - will alter their pronunciation to be understood by americans

    • @theRealAV8r
      @theRealAV8r 8 лет назад

      Jackson Almodobar I have always noted this regarding singers from all over the world. Even in local markets, if songs borrow in any way from western genres, automatic GA accent. Fascinating.

    • @midshipman8654
      @midshipman8654 8 лет назад +1

      theRealAV8r Yes! the Songs don't even have to have any English in it to adopt a GA-esque intonation and rhythm quality. Many Latin American, East Asian, and continental European songs for example have 'neutral' vocals that were influenced by the anglophone trend set 100 years ago to encompass a wider and more varied demographic.

    It’s hard to imagine “putting on” an American accent- being an American. British accents always sounds so elegant. It would seem to me much easier to go the other way with our flat accent. Lol. If we came from across the pond anyway, makes me wonder why it changed.

    • @delrey874
      @delrey874 2 года назад

      The American accent has changed little since the British brought it to America. The British accent, on the other hand, has changed. Anyway, the British accent is very elegant. To have a vulgar American accent is miserable.

    • @haggler
      @haggler Год назад

      American accents are super easy, there’s just a slightly tricky sound in words with “r”’s in them. If you avoid that mistake it’s easy to do an generic American accent.
