Before now, Alecs whole life has been at the institute. His guilt has stripped that away from him. Now, his "happy place" is slowly turning to Magnus. It's him that helps Alec back on track, and I love that.
Also, Alecs interaction with Madzie is adorable. 🥰
I definitely feel like this episode is a bit of a shift in the season where there becomes a more clear direction, and sets up some interesting threads. As you say, I never felt any real connection to Jocelyn so I wasn't sad about her in the funeral, but Clary's reaction when she couldn't say Jocelyn's name was really moving, and also seeing Alec struggle so much was moving. Alec is such a stoic character, I think this episode shows how vulnerable he actually is, and the damage from growing up as the oldest Lightwood in the Institute. Love your reactions as always!

I was also talking about this episode when I went ಠ_ಠ about Alec and Clary bonding. Becuase they do, but Jocelyn's death is what gets them there xd. Anyway, I agree that I'm glad most of the time it focused on Alec's guilt around Clary, not Jace. Jocelyn may have been his mother and it's a different kind of grief that he never got to know her, but she raised Clary for 18 years. And I totally agree - I didn't have much of a connection to Jocelyn, but it's sad thinking about your own life. And Clary's breakdown at the funeral so Jace has to say it kills me 😭. And yeah, like you said, Luke, Simon, and Magnus not being anle to go sucked. Plus Alec in that scene kills me :(.
Speaking of Alec, this is the episode where his self harm is made explicit, pretty much. It's not like he's doing something traditionally/stereotypically known as self harm, but he's shooting his bow until he's not only exhausted, but has scrapes and cuts on his hands. I love his scene with Magnus because of the emotional depth to it and also what Magnus says: "You hope the pain here (hands) will overpower the pain there (heart)". It's just so good. Also, I love the bonding we get for Clary and Alec :'). The circumstances suck, but seeing him willing to break rules for her, to make things right, is sweet. Plus how protective he is of her :). Which he was right with lol. Also the looks on their faces when she asks if he's her boyfriend XD. I love that part lol.
Also, Madzie!! Alec's interactions with her are so cute, you wouldn't think he'd be good with kids :)). And her trying to protect him from Iris :').
I forgot it was this episode that Aldertree gives Izzy the Yin Fen. Listen. . I hate this man. For many reasons xd. Also he has no reason to be beating down Jace like he is. He just sucks xd.
Simon's sister figuring stuff out way more than his mom is so real lol. Although unfortuantely they both seem to think he's crazy 😬. The rat was really a rough situation for him xd, but hopefully in the future he'll learn to keep more emergency blood on him lol. His excuses are funny though xD.
More Magnus backstory!! Every bit you hesr is more depressing than the last 😭 xd. I do think it was something Clary needed to hear, the whole conversation, though. Not just to remind her she's not the only one who hurts (though that's fair to feel when you're going through something but you can't see it that way for too long), but beyond that, that there's people who get it. I know those sound like the same thing lol, but I mean people who can help. Like what Magnus said "It got easier. Never easy, but easier." Which you're right, such a good quote 😭. And something probably helpful for Clary. Plus, a reminder that there are people who can give her memories pf her mom. Magnus is just so good in that scene :').
Also, I assuma they didn't tell him they were going to see Iris because Clary didn't want him to stop her lol. Still, not a good choice xd.
I think this is where this season really shows its tone, and how much more serious it is than the first. Not that the first four episodes haven't already been different and darker, but in this episode Clary literally almost gets impregnated by a demon. And not even a super humanoid one. It's super dark xd. Plus, Alec's self harm, Izzy's reaction to the Yin Fen, and Magnus's backstory.. It's not a bad change, but it's certainly something to notice. And it's just a good episode in general. Love this one :).
This got super long lol, whoops, but one more thing: I love how you take the time to explore the world and to understand stuff. Like, reading all the Warlock profiles - they're just a little detail, but they're a fun bit of lore and I'm glad you stopped to look at them :).
