Okay I'm not sure how, but I only now noticed that when Thorin tells Bilbo about how he thinks he was betrayed by someone in the group, he tells it specifically to Bilbo and trusts him enough to not have a single thought that Bilbo was the one who took the stone.

When I watched the ending the first time I was so upset/surprised that Thorin died, my dad looked at me weirdly and said that he also dies in the book. I have read the book before I watched the movies, I forgot the ending and had the same heartbreak twice. :(
