  • Learn how to use the Curves Tool for contrast in Snapseed from Google.
One of the most powerful features in Snapseed from Google is the Curves Tool.
Curves can do amazing things for us but this mastering this feature can be very intimidating without a little guidance. Don’t worry!
The kind of Curves that we are going to create in this tutorial are easy to understand and the will add contrast with precision to our mobile images.
You get to create your own control points when you are working with Curves in Snapseed. Moving a single control point up, or down, on the graph is just like moving the Brightness slider around in Snapseed’s Tune Image toolset. Moving a single control point changes the brightness of your entire image.
The real beauty of Curves appears when we can add more than one control point to the graph.
By carefully positioning two points, or more, on the graph we can make one range of tones brighter and simultaneously make another range of tones darker. It takes two control points, or more, to add contrast with real precision to our image.

Great video. I've been using Snapseed for ages and I absolutely love it. The curve option, I always had trouble with so left it well alone. Thanks so much man, you explained that so well. Cheers 👌

      Thank you very much.
Curves in Snapseed, or Adobe Photoshop, is not an intuitive tool. This is not something that you are likely to figure out on your own without a little guidance.
I am glad that you found this one helpful because once the interface makes sense Curves is so powerful!

Thank you. Curves is a super powerful feature in Snapseed, Adobe Photoshop, etc but definitely not a tool that makes sense without a little guidance.
I am glad to hear that this one makes sense for you now and using it will dramatically boost the quality of your mobile photography!

great video! I love how u use the greyscale bar to demonstrate the point. Genius!!!
One question tho, since the curve does the same thing as some other tool (contrast, shadow, highlight), what advantage does it offer over the others? In another word, when should I use the S curve over the other tool?

Thank you for the kind words on this tutorial. You are absolutely right that Curves and some the other tools in Snapseed overlap. I think that the difference comes down to control.
When you just want to make the whole image darker, or add more contrast everywhere, then one of the other sliders is a fine choice. When you need real precision though, when you want only a certain tonal range to change, or want to darken one set of tones more than another then Curves really shines.
