  • Hi everyone! It sure has been a hot minute hasn't it? But we are so back and I hope you all had a great new year! Now yes, I know this is another fontaine related video but I promise you the next one won't be..haha...
    I guess you could kind of consider this video a follow up to the fontaine house inspection. But out of all the cities we have so far, the court of Fontaine is certainly the citiest of cities. That’s why this video. Fontaine. Furina de fontaine. Macaroni
    While doing my own research for this video I came across Explorer’s Compass who goes deep into the inspirations for a lot of other aspects of fontaine so I would highly recommend checking their video out too! - • Explaining Fontaine's ...

    I'd like to add in 10:20 , the Callas Line (the aquabus line behind the Palais that connects to the Institute) was intentionally blocked off because according to the lore, it was destroyed when an accident in the Fontaine Research Institute happened. You can even meet a Melusine who used to operate the Callas Line aquabus in a world quest.

    In fact, the city's water system is a large closed system, as you already suspected. Steam plays a crucial role in generating energy. When machines are heated, water is used to cool them, the steam rises and collects in the towers and pipes (including in the large central arch) in collecting containers built into them. If these containers are full, the water will flow downwards using gravity and small rotors will be operated on its way. The waterways and canals are aesthetically good-looking reservoirs that naturally collect water (rain) and release it (solar evaporation). Towers and buildings can/could also be water storage (this is an artistic solution instead of water tanks). The sewer system plays a role in the sorting and drainage of water in the city (wastewater is drained and replaced with new water) and the majority of energy is also generated under the city.

      @nyankosoldier5156 8 дней назад +2

      I love this explanation focusing on the wisdom of fontaine people. There is just one small question: while having such massive structures across the entire city, serving as enery generation and circulation, Focalor did say she was supplying Fontaine's power consumption with the energy she gathered from the jurisdiction machine. And, as she specified, though only a small portion of that energy goes to the city but it's already enough for the entirety of fontaine.

    • @mvhauptmann
      @mvhauptmann 7 дней назад +6

      @@nyankosoldier5156 That energy might be the main source, but its also a very specific source depending on the processes of this jurisdiction machine. Water can permanently supply smaller systems and pumps.

    5:18 no wonder at my first arrival in Fontaine, it does remind me of an old factory/industrial building across the US or Europe. Well of course because Fontaine is based on the industrial revolution!
    Something about art deco, it shows optimism towards the future, not quite but resembles modern minimalist architecture. And seeing one in person was surreal.
    Anyway,
    though the main differences are that Fontaine did not show an environmental disaster (wait, maybe the institute's explosion??) which during the actual industrial revolution is very much rampant nor labor abuse isn't much of a problem in Fontaine either.

    The best thing it does as a city is feeling extraordinarily familiar.
    Besides having visited medieval german towns, that remind me of the houses of mondstadt, Fontaine city in general recalls a combination of country i live in and it's neighbours and france. A modern city where classes are clearly divided and you feel suffocated by the authority and the city itself.

But he’s, it is the most confusing city map, it looks amazing from the outside but inside it’s just walls and confusing paths.

    Fontaine’s city is one my least favorite out of all the cities in the whole game. Its monotonous colors makes it feel like it was carved off of a giant rock, the ground and the walls seem to be made of the same material and since there’s little to no variety, it almost looks like the entire city and all the buildings within it are built and finished at the same time. The proportions throw me off too. Sometimes it feels like the city was not built for regular sized humans but slightly taller giants lol.
    But I guess it’s all a deliberate choice. If Fontaine is to withstand a massive flood, they would need to use such massive and strong materials. While the buildings do look too rigid for my tastes, it does look like it can survive big waves.
    I have always criticized Fontaine (and Sumeru but that’s a different topic) for straying too far from reality while Mondstandt, Liyue Harbor and Inazuma City has largely felt like it was a good representation of the real world, but Fontaine cannot afford to copy the architectures of our real world Europe exactly. The real world inspiration for Fontaine does not deal with an imminent threat of a massive flood and thus Fontaine needed to be adjusted to seem harder and stronger than real world Europe. This is something I have come to appreciate now.

    Court of Fontaine is a visually impressive city, and probably the best-designed one across Teyvat so far.
    But I really hate how the scale of Fontaine is fitted towards you, the player, and not its inhabitants. The Aquebus lines, elevators, and recreational spaces are so detached from their worldbuilding that, outside of that wow factor on your first arrival, Court of Fontaine seems poorly realized. Like the environmental design team had a very clear vision of what Fontaine should be, working closely with the lore writers to create a surprisingly complete slice of history. And then the map designers get bored halfway through and shove default assets together so the outline fits, and leave it at that.

    Fontaine is that type of city trap where it looks amazing from above or far away or at some specific angel, however when u start walking around by foot u will see how over size/empty and somewhat depress some areas are. Some walls are just too big that u cant ignore the big bricks stacking on each other one by one. everything starting to feel flat that it could crush u one day, and the greens help to reduce that feeling but it just not enough. don't forget that this city is filled with water, and u know what water can do, erosion, slime, moss, moisture, wet, etc. because of how much shade the city has which is hard to keep things clean everyday/week. it basically creating more problems for both the city and the people.

    That upper garden seems purely decorative for people using the aquabus lines. It's like theming around a monorail route. Nobody's meant to "walk" them, other than gardeners. Also, my guess for what the "pipe" across the middle of the city means, I think that this is not a pipe. I think it's an elevator, similar to the St. Louis Arch, it goes up and curves across the top. Why? Eh. It can get you across town? It gives you a good view? Either way, I think it's for people.
    I will also have to point out one important factor when discussing Genshin's architecture (and most games), which is that the world map is not to scale. That is to say, if you look at a building that is 10m by 10m, then that building is not intended to actually be that small, and if you go inside it, then it will likely be more like 20-30m square. Everything in the open world is at a smaller scale than we're meant to understand the "real life" version of it to be. The distance between one city and another is meant to be ten times or more further than the game makes it appear. The "real" Teyvat would have several times the population, several times the number of buildings, and each building will be at least slightly larger. The world we see in game is representational, like Epcot, scaled to be "fun sized."

    The thing with video game cities is that some of them are just a representation of a city. They often are missing a lot of infrastructure. And because it's a mobile game to there are many limitations. But just think if they made every city just as big and complex as Novingrad from Witcher 3, and maybe we could see the real size when genshin gets an anime.

    13:20 You know what i don't like? Floating stone platforms. To me it is just lazy game design, if they want a slick modern look they should make it metal, if instead they wanted classical look they should have modelled pillars and arches supporting it. It wouldn't take away from the general vibe but it would add a lot in terms of believability.

    I think i genuinely saw Fontaine in a lucid dream years before Genshin even released. It was mixed with parts of Neuvilette's teaser. I was first standing in the field that looked quite the same, and then i got to the city which was north of it that looked pretty similar. The dream was short, so that's it. But i still remember it. Lucid dreams are exceptionally rare.

  • @tirsden
    @tirsden 5 дней назад +2

    My first impression of Fontaine was the same as anyone else who got the intro cutscene on release, walking over the rise to see the huge elevator-thing... and I was like, oh. This... this is what we're doing. Making it big, because it's just polygons. Immersion gone, and Fontaine City is just 800% more of that. In fact, a lot of Fontaine in general is "I've seen this done before, and done better."
    Contrast Fontaine's major structures with something like the incredible architecture in Dishonored (the first game, the second will ever and only rot in eternal damnation), which looks a proper mix of impressive, believable, and lived-in. Even a bunch of World of Warcraft architecture of similar pastoral-fantasy vibe does it better. I suppose Fontaine was a precursor to the jaw-droping utter miss that is Natlan, soooo... meh.

    • @gimmeyourrights8292
      @gimmeyourrights8292 23 часа назад

      Fontaine & Natlan are honestly the Yin and Yang of bad level designs, where Fontaine is so large it becomes empty as a result, Natlan is so unbelievably small that it could pass more for a micronation than an actual one.

      @gimmeyourrights8292 23 часа назад +1

      @@bakitama As explained in the video, world design cannot be too wacky otherwise the spell is broken and the player stops being immersed, likewise for it's too grounded. Fontaine is on the latter end of the scale of being too wacky to the point where the player checks out, also why is "Fantasy game" always an argument to hand wave poor decisions? This is a genre that's usually more thought out with its worldbuilding.

    17:56 the way most cube mapped windows work is to just to randomly pull from a set of interior cubes to be able to populate windows without having to render what's actually inside each and every individual window. The drawback of this is having adjacent windows who's interiors don't match.

    • @MiyuKawasaki
      @MiyuKawasaki 8 дней назад

      Apparently not the entire fontaine was flooded, only the "court of fontaine region"
      It didn't even reach Romaritime Harbor according to an npc

    • @pochiche6398
      @pochiche6398 8 дней назад +4

      @MiyuKawasaki that's easier, but still wondering about the logic of it, the final cutscene showed the court being flooded to the top, but the land mass around it would require the level of all water to rise, and i think that'd logically go into the waterfalls in a wave, maybe? or maybe it'd make sense for the inside of the city to flood and keep water inside its walls, but that doesn't happen- ugh, sorry for all the yapping!!

    • @MiyuKawasaki
      @MiyuKawasaki 7 дней назад +2

      @@pochiche6398 Hmm tbh I'm not sure about the details either (and it was never explained), but here's the logic of the flood imo:
      The flood is meant to wash the sins of all Fontainians away, and according to the prophecy slates, the flood can't happen as long as Furina doesn't get put on trial. This means that every Fontainian will gather at the opera house to watch the trial, since it's a once-in-a-lifetime show in Fontaine (potentially even attracting all Fontainians that were abroad at the time, like Xavier)
      This is to ensure that every Fontainian will be hit by the flood and no one gets spared, and also the reason why not the ENTIRE fontaine needs to be flooded, simply the center part of the region (every NPC was either at the city or the court at the time)
      I'm more confused as to how all the animals survived, haha
      Didn't seem like they were rescued with Wriothesley's ship (similar to noah's ark)
      I think they kept it all vague on purpose bc it wasn't the main focus of the quest. The main focus was on the Hydro Archon's plan to save Fontaine, which worked out as intended. We didn't even get an explanation for why Childe's vision stopped working or who Phase 2 of the weekly boss is (the shadow figure). I guess they're leaving it up to our interpretation

    I think fountain would have been really something if the city was pretty much the whole region like 3 times the size it is currently with some small grass strips on the sides with the only other area would be the college ruins across the water , the prison, and that area with the giant blue tree lol , to make up for area w enemies , I would make the sewer system must larger with areas with only enemies and they would have parts that would lead to the water belt around it.

    Imo Fontaine's architecture could have been much better, closer to looking like a steampunk-ish city like Columbia from Bioshock and/or Piltover from Arcane instead of it looking primarily white with too very few shades of ocean blue and it's city-walls looking almost like a fishbowl.

    • @gimmeyourrights8292

    That one fountain you can hardly see is for the maintenance staff. Specifically to pess them off, as they'll have to regularly climb up or down there to fix things and fish out any trash or even leaves that is inevitably going to end up there. And no matter if they come from above or below, it will be a hassle. You'd need some rather long ladders either way, though I think lowering yourself using ropes might be more convenient than carrying around those huge ladders. And more fun.

    I feel like Fontaine was inspired by both the Industrial Revolution and Piltover and Zaun from League of Legends. The main reason for my Piltover and Zaun assumptions are that the upper city is opulent with skyscrapers continuously rising upwards, the buildings are adorned with creme, white and gold to show the court's affluence while the under city is a smaller tight-knit community with more art noveu inspired architecture and a more grimy atmosphere. League of Legends didn't invent the concept but I still feel like Fontaine drew some inspiration on it.
