    Great summary Matt, I love that fact that you stick to the facts, and do not compromise yourself to make camera companies happy at the cost of your integrity. You translated all the hype into what it means in the real world, which is where most of us live. Thanks for being true to the industry and calling it how you see it. Sony can only benefit from having you review their cameras, hopefully they will see that soon. Good luck and keep doing you.

    10:24 It's the same type of screen that's on the A7RV where it tilts up and down (and pulls out) on-axis with the sensor like the A1 and Sony's older cameras used to (and Nikon's Z bodies still do), but can also fully articulate outwards and flip forwards. Granted, it can't "tilt" left and right like the Z8 and Z9 can, but honestly Sony's implementation here is really the best of both worlds. I have an A7RV and I can't go back to other bodies where it's either tilt _or_ articulation, but not both.

    Matt, I looked at many RUclips reviews on the a9 iii and you are the only one that gives an objective review of the camera. All the others are excited about the specs and forget about what it will really mean to operate the camera. Thanks a lot. Keep on your good work. I hope you will be able to do your hand on review of the a9 iii soon.

      Matt is wrong in a lot of this video. The only thing that is being hyped up that doesn't really matter is the 1/80,000 flash sync, but I'm pretty sure people lose their minds over the 1/32,000 shutter speeds that other companies say they can do with their cameras but has no real world application. The point of mentioning that flash sync is that it's going forward with the entire idea that this camera unlocks everything that was held back by mechanical shutters and other line scanned sensors. This is the evolution of mirrorless cameras.

    With all the hype around the announcement of this camera yesterday, I think you offer the best balanced feedback on what this camera is likely capable of and how it is differentiated (or not) from the current market offerings. Great perspective as always Matt. It will be exciting to see how this technology evolves over the next 2-3 years and how other manufacturers incorporate the global shutters into their product lineups.

      It's noy Hype. You might want it to be or you just don't understand the significance of this issue of the global shutter. This is not the usual Matt Granger "Well now it has auto focus for animals eyes or it has 45 MP which is a game changer" when it's not. This will affect sales of all cameras and how all manufactures now build their cameras, Nikon and Canon have to act and fast. It's not hype at all. Granger has given a lack luster review to one of the most important and significant developments in the history of 35mm cameras. But he is a new man so maybe he does not realise that, much to my surprise though! Get your act together on this one Granger you are a mile behind.

Thanks for a practical and level headed review.

    Magnificently summarized. Thinking it through yesterday, this is exactly how i see it. It's the perfect camera for a sports photographer who knows exactly how far his subjects are in a stadium or arena so you don't need to crop and can pick the right lens.
    For everyone else it's an insane use of $6000.00

  • @Bob4golf1
    @Bob4golf1 8 месяцев назад +2

    Steve Fine, Sports Illustrated photo editor once said "you can't crop a sports picture too much"! He knew what he was talking about. I've been a sports photographer for over 20 years and the most important part of sports photography is the crop! I came from the D5 to the Z9 last year and get much better images from the Z9 because there is so much additional area that I can crop! Some sports, like baseball, are easier because the relative motion is small (the batter doesn't move much) but football is just the opposite. You not only have the quarterback, halfback and wide receivers moving, they cross each other paths all the time. This forces you to shoot a bit loose in order to track all theses people and when you do your final editing, you want enough room to crop tight if you have to (and believe me, you have to)! I would no more think of going back to 24 MP than I would film.

  • @JasinBoland
    @JasinBoland 8 месяцев назад +5

    Really great video Matt, theres some amazing specs to celebrate on this camera but it really is looking like a daytime sports camera, I don't feel the file size will appeal to wildlife, especially the bird team out there. I would definitely miss the file size of the Z 9, in the past I wasn't much for toggling between FX and DX but now its very much part of my everyday usage with the Z 9 45MP file. Also not sure 1 second of 120fps RAW is worth much unless you are knowing pretty much exactly when you will need it especially when you can shoot 120 fps jpeg and pretty much not fill the buffer. The strobe at any shutter does sound amazing and I am sure there will be many flash units in RnD to can handle those massive shutter speeds. Kudos to Sony for being the first to implement the GS into a stills camera let hope they can iron out all the issues before Canon and Nikon give it a crack.

    Matt couldn't agree more, im an OG A9 shooter and waited for this release only to be disappointed, great camera for a select group of folks. The best part is the ice has been broken and global will now be in all top cameras going forward, just not required for me a Bird shooter. Was hoping for a bit more cropping power with more rez but alas Sony had other ideas. The "older tech" of a stacked sensor is fine for most of us and I never had any distortion in over 50k BIF shots, shoot flash 6x a year for events so a mech shutter is sufficient for me, the global flash advantage will be great for arena sports where they shoot house strobes and maybe some other creative people but not for me.

In years to come, this will be a norm and who knows what's in store down the horizon. What is already in the market is a blessing in itself. As for me, my Z8 is all I need, a solid all rounder. Some really good thoughts and questions, Matt!! As a wildlife photographer, and Sony shooter, who makes very good use of my 42MP sensor followed by serious cropping, I have been, for months, looking forward to the A9iii to upgrade to a stacked sensor. I was really hoping it would be a Sony version of the Nikon Z8 with Sony's Ai focus system and all the other good stuff and at the same price as the Z8. Boy was I disappointed!!!!!!!!!
    Instead, Sony made their mid level stacked sensor camera into a low-res, super fast niche camera and bumped the price to within $200 CDN of the flagship A1. The A9iii costs $9400CDN (including taxes) here in Canada. Now there is no high-res stacked sensor mid priced Sony camera. I am pissed!!! Now I am looking for a used A1.

      Yeah, the hype of exciting media events can lead to overlooking outside factors. I have been there, not criticising others. But its a sealed environment, you hear all these great features, get to test them out, see great results, it can be hard in that heat to think about the potential negatives, or the broader and historical context.
      In a way, being stuck at my messy desk has that advantage.

      The Pixii A1112 was a compact, stills-focused, 12-megapixel global shutter camera that came out in 2020. Very few people noticed, and of those who did, most said 12 megapixels weren't enough and the price (about $3000 US) was too high. Now, Sony brings us a global-shutter camera with twice the megapixels and at twice the price…

    • @RiposteThis
      @RiposteThis 8 месяцев назад +2

      Sony said they are the first full frame global shutter. This is 100% true, whether or not Canon allegedly designed one a year ago doesn't matter because they never did anything with it, they announced it and that was it. And the other one is in the Red Komodo that is Super 35.

    Hi Matt. A great summary and also some really good technical insight into the real use cases for some of the high-end specs. This obviously evidences your own grasp of the technical side of photography which of course is balanced by your more artistic side :) What I appreciate here is the non-biased stance you take and while I am a Z9 owner I don’t feel I will be missing out on too much with this release from Sony. What is great, is having the competition driving innovation this has to be good for us all as photographers. I agree with your comment btw re the 120fps, Lovely to have for the rare occasions. Also, the workflow associated with more fps should not be under estimated. Yes, you are more likely to get that perfect shot of the subject however you then have to trawl through lots of images and are left with a choice between 2 or 3 images with the Z9 or maybe 10 very similar images with this Sony ...... Keep up your great work btw as this video gave much more of an insight than one of the other reviewers that was given a hands-on option.......

  • @tstanley01

    Your initial thoughts were identical to mine...only good for a very small niche of pro sport photographers...anyone interested in high sync speeds for product or fashion are going to be using medium format with leaf shutters where their sync speeds are typically higher than the spec of the flashes themselves. It is cool they are finally out there, and they definitely blow the doors of the R3, but the Z8 and Z9 are much better all rounder cameras, specially with Nikon's newest telephoto releases...

Matt didn't even bring up that you can set your flashes power in the a9iii and it'll work within that power amount to give your your maximum sync speed.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 8 месяцев назад +2

      The camera isn't nearly as niche as Matt makes it sound. To me, and I'm pretty sure I'm in line with my colleagues, the a9 III is the perfect wedding and event camera. Silent shooting under any light, exactly in the sweet spot with regards to resolution (no, I don't want 8000 images at 50 mpix after a day of shooting), no more HSS problems (meaning I can leave the AD600 at home and do everything with my V1s), tilty-flippy-screen, and cheaper than the flagships. If anything, the a1 and Z9 are more niche. Their only advantages are 8k video and 50 mpix stills - nobody really needs that, except for very high end commercial photographers.

    A9 III is an evolution and a revolution at the same time. The global shutter abandons the one thing that is a possible point of failure for our cameras, the mechanical shutter. The "true global shutter" is a significant milestone, but Nikon's very close "just leave out the shutter" really is exactly that -- "very close". The one thing that sits in the background is that one or two leaf shutter lenses (I think something like 85mm 1.4 and 45mm 1.2) would bring enough capability to any of the competitors to keep them in the hunt for a while. And really, I don't think it would be hard to do this (along with some re-programming with a firmware update for the bodies).

    Here are my 5cents to that.
    The main advantage of the GS is no more mechanical shutter(MS) ! The MS is expensive and the major lifetime limit of a camera. The faster sync time is just a better use case. If the GS-chip can be build to a similar price as sensors cost today, then the GS will push the MS out.

    I agree, that it is a NICHE camera, But to some extent all these expensive cameras are niche (probable except for the A1 and Z9 that can do anything even reduce their MP if wanted). 1DXIII, Nikon D6, R3, low MP specialized (niche) cameras for sport.

    Thank you for the objective walk-through comparing the specs with other current full frame models and pointing out the few under-specs when compared with the mechanical shutter models. The base ISO 250 does bring up the question of the missing DR information that Sony usually provide when introducing their new cameras or maybe a way to differentiates it with the yet to come A1 II that may have lower base ISO and over the top DR to justify the extra $$,$$$. It's an "Early Adapter" camera where the R&D $$$ will be funded while Sony will surely sell the Global Shutter technology to all the current Sony sensor equipped camera manufactures for their new Medium Format, Full Frame, APS-C, 1", Micro 4/3....for their NEW INCREATABLE PREMIUM FLAGSHIP cameras and trickles down to medium & lower price range models for the next 10+ years now they have purposely inflated the second highest model closely behind the A1 and a marketing tester to see how consumer will respond to it's specs vs $$$.

    I thought the first global shutter mirrorless from Sony or Canon would have been an APS-C format (from their respective industrial/security divisions) so this is a good news no matter what price it is at the moment (not for my pockets). Your “niche” label seems apt to me. Given the narrow ISO range, this camera will be light hungry. So for well lit sports (especially winter sports on a sunny day) and snowy wildlife scenes, this camera will opens up a lot of creative possibilities. Outside of that? I’m not at all sure what to expect, and overall I suspect we’re several years from having a global shutter camera which can readily compete with the broader dynamic range and pixel densities of higher end progressive scan sensors.

    Several reviewers have talked as though the lack of shutter, pre-snap buffering, and elimination of rolling shutter artefacts had not already been addressed by the Nikon Z9. It seems to me the advantage gain with the new Sony is in 120 FPS in raw format versus jpeg for the Z9, but that is counterbalanced by 45mp for the Z9 versus 24mp for the Sony. Synching at higher speeds is fine, but the same effect can be achieved now with filters. A true global shutter is a remarkable technical achievement, but in practical terms, the Z9 and Z8 are competetive.

    What sync speeds will one realistically be able to expect with such a camera, for lighting systems like Godox and similar? Will 1/1000 be fine? 1/2000? It's true that 1/80,000 felt like marketing, but after accounting for the differences with a base of ISO250, by how many more stops will one actually be able to kill daylight when using non-specialty lighting systems? Just 1-2, or dramatically more than that?

    I watched your video after having read the specifications of this camera and agree completely with your comments, they will of course irritate many but one really needs to look at the type of work one does and decide if this camera is going to allow you to make more money with your camera, take shots you couldn't do before, allow you to offer results you can't get any other way to justify the cost. If you strip out the sensor and the global shutter benefits, this body with a standard 24MP BSI sensor would probably be $2,500.00 at the most, so to me you are paying an awful lot of money ($3,500 at least) for this global shutter feature. 1/80,000 of a second flash sync speed sounds cool but is a marketing tool, your flashes output will be so minimal at this speed most flashes will be useless (If they can work at all at that level). A big error is staying with the CFE-A cards which are much slower than the CFE-B especially when you are going to plug the 120FPS RAW feature, not much good when you cripple this feature with your choice of memory cards. You duly note the flash features benefit Portrait and Wedding Photographers but they typically want Higher resolution camera bodies. The 120FPS Raw with pre-release will be cool for bird photographers but I don't see how this is a game changer for sports photographers who shoot jpeg a lot anyway. New tech like this is exciting and was the next evolution of camera technology so my congrats to Sony 👏👍, but until costs drop significantly on these sensors, you really need to do your homework when deciding to buy one, whether it's this camera, a Sony A1, Nikon Z8/9 or the future Canon R1. Thanks Matt - Jeff

    I’ll be curious what technology in flash they’ll develop to best utilize global shutter technology. Instead of a crazy power bank, they need to use a more powerful capacitor to decrease flash duration. It has always been nice but with a global shutter a super fast flash duration will have a lot more utility.

    I think this is an amazing breakthrough in camera technology. I think it's definitely a game changer. There are some issues with it. The ISO starts at 250. That might not be a bad thing though. A lot of Fugi cameras start around 200. But their type A cards are going to be an issue even with a 24 MP sensor. There's a lot of data being written onto that card at 120 fps even if it has a large buffer it's still going to hit that wall fairly quick. But I believe this camera is needed. I can't wait to see what photographers can do with it. What if Nikon has a global shutter and they put it in the z6 III at a lower price than the a9 III? I don't Nikon comes out with one soon but it would be cool if they did.

That's going to put your ISO at 250 or above on a bright day. BUT EVEN THEN, you don't need a ton of dynamic range for BIF or sports.
